The story is told of the Cornell football coach Lefty James who wandered out one fine spring day to watch a lacrosse game against archrival Syracuse back in the mid-1950's. But his day was ruined when he noticed Jim Brown, the all-America running back, performing with the Syracuse lacrosse team.
''Oh my goodness,'' he gasped. ''They let him play with a stick ?''
Not only did they let Jim Brown play with a stick, they named him an all-American in lacrosse, too. He dominated the old Indian game the same way he dominated football and basketball games and track meets, the same way he dominates a roller-skating pathway or the way he dominates a screen in those macho movies, or the way he dominates a room.
''I coached this game for 46 years, and Jim Brown was the greatest lacrosse player I ever saw,'' said Roy Simmons
Coach Scott said the same.10stone5 wrote: ↑Fri May 19, 2023 5:56 pmhttps://www.nytimes.com/1984/03/19/spor ... sport.html

__________
Uhhhh - he was accused/arrested about 7 times for assault predominatly against women - that's a bit of a chink in the armor as Matt Dillon would say. One of the greatest athletes to ever walk the face of the earth no doubt.
I love this stuff.Lax1887 wrote: ↑Sat May 20, 2023 11:14 am My favorite Jim Brown story came from my dentist. Growing up in New Jersey my dentist, Dr. Donald Gucker, was an All American goalie for Rutgers in the 1950's. We always talked a little lacrosse and he related a story to me about Jim Brown. Dr. Gucker's senior year he was selected to play in the 1957 North South game. His randomly chosen roommate was Jim Brown. He couldn't have been more complimentary about Jim saying he was one of the best lacrosse players he had ever seen as well as being a friendly humble person off the field.
"Jim Brown did it. Why can't you'?
!!!! can't just highlight the good. Ugly history there.keno in reno wrote: ↑Sat May 20, 2023 8:20 pm Great lacrosse player. Great football player. Accused several times throughout his life of beating and threatening to kill women. Yay?
