The story is told of the Cornell football coach Lefty James who wandered out one fine spring day to watch a lacrosse game against archrival Syracuse back in the mid-1950's. But his day was ruined when he noticed Jim Brown, the all-America running back, performing with the Syracuse lacrosse team.

''Oh my goodness,'' he gasped. ''They let him play with a stick ?''

Not only did they let Jim Brown play with a stick, they named him an all-American in lacrosse, too. He dominated the old Indian game the same way he dominated football and basketball games and track meets, the same way he dominates a roller-skating pathway or the way he dominates a screen in those macho movies, or the way he dominates a room.

''I coached this game for 46 years, and Jim Brown was the greatest lacrosse player I ever saw,'' said Roy Simmons

The old field at Manhasset, if a field could only talk!

Absolute Pioneer of the game - in my opinion the only guy who can be considered as the greatest of all time in two sports.

ESPN did a special on him during the PGA championship today. No mention of lacrosse until the golf broadcaster mentioned his prowess after the close of it. Disappointed with them for that; not mentioning his impact on our great sport is nothing but a disservice to his legacy.

RIP to a great lacrosse player and great man!

Uhhhh - he was accused/arrested about 7 times for assault predominatly against women - that's a bit of a chink in the armor as Matt Dillon would say. One of the greatest athletes to ever walk the face of the earth no doubt.

I can’t buy into the GOAT designation. Greatest athlete to play the game is viable.

My favorite Jim Brown story came from my dentist. Growing up in New Jersey my dentist, Dr. Donald Gucker, was an All American goalie for Rutgers in the 1950's. We always talked a little lacrosse and he related a story to me about Jim Brown. Dr. Gucker's senior year he was selected to play in the 1957 North South game. His randomly chosen roommate was Jim Brown. He couldn't have been more complimentary about Jim saying he was one of the best lacrosse players he had ever seen as well as being a friendly humble person off the field.

My H.S. coach played lacrosse and football at Syracuse, 4 years after "32" left SU for the Browns. He said the aura of Jim Brown permeated the locker rooms. If a player screwed up on the field, Schwartzwalder and Simmons would bark out "Jim Brown did it. Why can't you'? :D

Wow. That must have been quite an inspiration. :D

Great lacrosse player. Great football player. Accused several times throughout his life of beating and threatening to kill women. Yay?

Indeed the myths that have grown over the years for a one-time only First Team AA begs the question as the GOAT.
