Daily case rate well above 200k, looks like headed north to 300k on steep trajectory.

Just broke 4k deaths in a day for first time.
we won't get normalized case and death stats until probably a week from now according to the experts, to know a comparable snapshot.

cases are just <2% higher than dec 17, and 7 day deaths are lower than several days after that of around 2700+ right now, we're still in holiday reporting lag.

testing is down and some people say that's possibly a result of all the testing at colleges being suspended. which is substantial but maybe not that large? one relatively current metric thru holidays is hospitalizations, which continue to rise.

For comparison and as an example to others, MD unveils phased rollout:

Appears Teachers will be in phase 1B.

From Baltimore Sun:
Phase 1A covers health care workers, nursing home residents and staff, first responders, and public safety and corrections officers.

Phase 1B, which will allow people 75 and older to get vaccinated along with high-risk inmates, teachers, people living in special needs group homes, and people involved in “continuity of government.”

The last part of Phase 1 will let people 65-74 get vaccinated along with essential workers in lab services, agriculture, manufacturing and the postal service. Hogan said that might come in early March.

Phase 2 will include people 16-64 with increased health risks, prisoners and essential workers in fields such as utilities and transportation, but there is no timeline for when the state might begin the phase.

Hogan said about 30% of the state will be vaccinated by May, but younger and healthier people will likely wait until the summer or after.

Hogan said 270,150 doses of vaccines have been distributed “directly into the hands of front-line vaccinators” in Maryland.

As of Tuesday morning, nearly 77,000 people had received their first of two shots — an increase of more than 11,000 from the day before, but reaching still only 1.27% of the state’s population.

Germany's a different story. As are most all Euro models. Unless we are implmenting German's mode in, say, Michigan.

Why is geographical compactness in any way relevant?

It's not the days of the pony express. Information travels at the speed of light, goods ship overnight from any address to any address.
Great if there is no action needed, just spreading info.

What is your experience with logistics? Gonna go out on a
limb and say, “limited?”
3PL or 4PL?
Interestingly, and speaking of Germany and combatting the disease, they are moving to a 15k statewide model.

yes, i know. and i was just giving you grief because germany is the gold standard. and one of us stole the other's national/decentralize playbook.
We are a decentralized Country, in part. This has both good points, and bad ones.
wgdsr wrote: Mon Jan 04, 2021 10:10 pm and i just don't believe it's that easy.
Why? What makes you think that our current capacity is just maxxed out..and it simply can't go up?
wgdsr wrote: Mon Jan 04, 2021 10:10 pm it's certainly not manufacturing space.
Sure it is. Where do you think all those vials come from? And needles? And labels. And, and, and....

There was a limit to what could be produced pre Covid. What you're telling me, is that it wasn't possible to step that capacity up over the last 6 months in a national emergency. Come on. Does that REALLY hold water for you? We're maxxed out, and that's the end of it?
wgdsr wrote: Mon Jan 04, 2021 10:10 pm again... we're not on the same page here. thank god (goodness?) in america, that's ok.
Well, right now we're paying three times what Canada pays per capita for a worse outcome.

At what point do you say "wow, this system isn't working". When we're 5 times more expensive? 10? What's your limit?

And yes, of course it's ok that we disagree. It's why I come to the Forum!
Who is running the decentralized model?

Where has the Federal government been these last two months? How is it possible that they did not have a plan for getting these vaccines distributed to Americans?
They chose States rights instead of Federalizing the response soup to nuts. We knew this months ago. This is what Republicans want and we have a Republican in the White House, so here we are. Is this a bad thing? Yes, if you want things to happen quickly. No, if you believe that every State should be treated differently.

Coordinating it all through each State slows everything down. Speaking as someone who has to deal with different rules/taxes, different systems (software, etc.) in all the States we sell our spirit in? I'd KILL to have one single Federal set of rules and standards. It's why the EU was formed. The downside is, each State/Country gives up some sovereignty in the name of efficiency. Pick your poison, I guess.

We CHOSE to do this. And unless they get their act together, and fast? The Feds are going to add six months to this pandemic because they didn't act unilaterally.

Is it worth it? Is State's rights worth it? I sure don't think it's worth it when we're in a pandemic..... we're at war. Full stop.
I can’t speak to CO, but MD had a distribution plan. And it’s a good one to make it happen. Not relying solely on one route or vaccination supercenters like Murphy in NJ. Now it’s just a matter of getting the vaccine. Hogan said in his presser that he thinks the reality will be a surge and then people tapping their toes waiting.

If the issue lies with the feds, we should be hearing from the pharm companies speaking out to clear their names and reputations, no? They should have clear numbers they can speak to as far as orders shipped.

The Feds are delivering the vaccine to where the states say they want it. How would you have administered the vaccinations ? Create a national health system from scratch ? The only viable option is to work through state & local health depts, building on their vacc clinics, health care providers & pharmacies. State & local govts know best what's available in their jurisdiction.

The phizer vaccine demands stringent handling and specified temperature(s), which means it can not simply be shipped to your local PCP like a flu vaccine. There are major corporations that have manufactured transportation containers to meet the phizer spec'd demands....couple that with aligning people to be ready and in line upon its arrival...and pray that facility has no mechanical issues with its cryogenic systems and dry ice on deck. Because they did determine who receives the vaccine, that also adds another layer of complexity.

No, I am not making excuses, just venting on some of the issues that I see as major hurdles.

I liked that they originally said the military would handle logistics, because there is at least one base in every state, we are not at war, it could be distributed centrally, then distributed further from there. Each base would be a depot for a set of zipcodes. This also guarantees an added level of safety.

This just makes all of them all look stupid. Until it is known for certain, this should not be speculated on publically by government officials.

Fauci? This was Birx individually. And she's disgraced herself multiple times now.

Fauci was on the outs as soon as he was announced to be doing the Biden effort ongoing.

How often has the Task Force met as a complete group in the last two months?

oops, didn't mean to post on this thread.

meh. in this pandemic, we've taken a lot of action based on speculation and best guesses. this doesn't even look like any kind of call to action.

more to the point of the story, it says all she did herself was bring up the possibility in a meeting. the way it's written, it looks like the report probably wasn't authored, sent or edited by her. maybe the whole task force signed off on it, or maybe it was a rogue.

i know you didn't specifically single her out, but looks like folks are quick to toss her under the bus.

edit: oops. didn't see your last post.

ok. and i refer to my post above.
- she brought up the possibility in a meeting
- we don't know the backstory on the release, who put together
- the report supposedly said may
- a cdc spokesman in the article is quoted as saying we might not know for months. saying might is a real problem?

whoever was pushing out sounds like they didn't care to take in cdc input. so cdc counters and the states get their take as well.

not really helpful, but as i said, a non-event. i don't get the knives for birx, but hey.

if we saw the full report, we might have more to judge by. did they give other possibilities with or without full evidence? cold weather and reasons why cold weather, etc.?

No it is not the UK strain. The claim is (Birx - apparently alone) claiming a new strain having originated in the US. CDC seems to be united in disagreeing with her.
