US Lacrosse created the USILA to foster intercollegiate teams for both men and women.  After the NCAA organized national championships for men in 1971 and for women in 1982, US Lacrosse shifted its focus to supporting collegiate teams at NCAA schools that did not actually field varsity teams.  At the time, these programs were the Men’s Division Intercollegiate Associates (MDIA), Women’s Division Intercollegiate Associates (WDIA), and the NAIA.  Over time, the NAIA, like the NCAA, pulled NAIA Lacrosse under the NAIA umbrella, while US Lacrosse did the opposite with the MDIA.  The MDIA had become too complicated for US Lacrosse to administer and consequently, on August 24, 2006, the MDIA became a separate entity called… the MCLA.  While he people who ran the MCLA still remained on the US Lacrosse Board, the MCLA was no longer run by US Lacrosse.  The WDIA in January 2011 was also reorganized and renamed the Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA).
