GAME TALK- Salisbury vs Berry

Post by DeepPocket »

At the half it’s Salisbury 4, Berry 3. Yes you read that right. Watching this it seems clear that Salisbury is the deeper and more talented team, however the edge for effort goes to Berry. Ground balls 20 to 17 Berry. Salisbury not chasing shots leading to Berry clears. Really, if not for Warren in net, Salisbury might be looking at a up hill climb heading into the second half.

I would expect the second half to show Salisbury’s coaching excellence making adjustments, and I would expect their depth to play in as fatigue comes. However, if they keep playing as they did in the first half, this could be interesting.

5-5 coming into the 4th. The slop continues. Salisbury starts the fourth at man up but has had a difficult time controlling their emotions, giving Berry 5 extra man opportunities. Some on technicals.

Final 9-7 Salisbury. Seemed Salisbury was able to settle into their game more on the offensive side in the fourth. Still, Berry’s D on Wongus is something other coaches should take notes on. Pretty much made him a non-factor. Warren kept things together making those saves when there was defensive breakdowns. Berry came to play and they deserve credit for that, but this was a uncharacteristic game for Salisbury. I’m sure Berkman will have plenty to say to his team at practice.

Was it starters or 2nd and 3rd liners for Salisbury ? Can't call much of anything based on a preseason game. Berry had more to gain by showing up to play. Same old preseason exercises, let's shake the tree and see what falls out. ;)

This was a regular season game. Salisbury stood to lose a lot if they lost to an unranked Berry to open their season. The box score tells the tale of Salisbury starters playing.

all starters played for Salisbury. However there were 2 surprises who were not dressed... attack man Pierre Armstrong and F/O T.J. Logue. I'm guessing they were injured as they still earned a roster spot on this year's squad. With the absence of Armstrong, the attack was missing 2/3rds of last years starters (Moroney out for year with injury). So in addition to replacing 2 all Americans on defense the Gulls were asked to generate offense with 2 guys who accounted for 120 points last year.

Now with all that being said, Berry is talented and fought hard. Both teams played sloppy, but it was the first game of the year so some of that was to be expected. Both team's next games might shed some more light on who they are. Salisbury vs Lynchburg & Berry vs Wac

Berry was missing its best offensive player (broken thumb), and still managed to get more quality shots. Salisbury's offense has had slow starts to many seasons, but usually looks like a completely different offense in mid April.
