City rivalries

Post by Farfromgeneva »

Does your town have one? Even Springfield of the Simpsons fame had a adjacent town rivalry Lisa helped uncover the truth of regarding Jebediah Springfield!

Atlanta’s is whom? This argues Charlotte.

Now I love those cowboys, I love their gold
Love my uncle, God rest his soul
Taught me good, Lord, taught me all I know
Taught me so well, that I grabbed that gold
I left his dead ass there by the side of the road, yeah

Great scene. Didn't they get friendlier over time?

I was surprised to see that piece as I don’t think about Charlotte that much and there was a time I’d be there at least 1-2x/qtr visiting clients. That thinking is probably tied more to a time when folks stayed closer to home after HS/college.

In the old days Minneapolis vs St Paul was one of the greatest rivalries anywhere. This especially so in the days when they had a strong semi pro league which evolved into a minor league rivalry. People would watch a game in one city, then take the trolley into the next city to watch the second half of the double header. Before the day was out there would be fights and other hassles.

Years ago I had an old friend who played in the league. He told me they had a great time and the fun was beyond all belief. Players would shout the words "girl scouts" to each other when they were bench jockeying but in the end they were still pals.

Jefferson vs Tilden ~ at one time this was the greatest rivalry in all of God's Country. Jefferson of East New York vs Tilden of East Flatbush. At one time these sections of Brooklyn were actually cities. Small wonder why we had such great rivalries in the past.

Regret that the quality of this film isn't so kosher. But it sure brings back memories to me of that great undefeated regular season we enjoyed. I had a couple of former classmates on the Orange Wave team as I had graduated the year before.

Turkey Day bowl was always a treat to watch. Too bad that they stopped it stopped but that is also true for other historic rivalries as the urban schools just cannot keep up with the well financed parochial schools.

Here’s the real deal

Massillon Tigers vs Canton McKinley Bulldogs

Paul Brown led Massillon to five state titles before moving to Ohio State. It’s no coincidence that his Cincinnati Bengals share the same mascot and orange and black colors.

“It was bigger than anything I did in college as a player,” said former Massillon player and Washington Huskies Head Coach Don James. As a coach, the excitement, buildup and preparation compares to the Rose Bowl.”
