Kids not staying on island for college as other schools offer such incredible facilities may be part of it. That divide has grown. Just look at the Thompson Center. Georgetown now has a very very legit facility to offer beyond just academics. Just a thought.
Similarly, many more opportunities to play great lacrosse and make the tournament (via AQ) off of the island these days.

Huge game Friday night at Nova on many fronts. Georgetown wins and gets the 1 seed. Lose and it’s a 3 way tie and I don’t know the tie breaker. More than that the Hoyas need to win to keep the momentum going. Obviously they can bounce back in BET but this team is built for 2022, period and hiccups won’t help. Nova is a very good team and away from opening game last year, this is a dog fight virtually every time. Friday night game UTL, kids will be ready to go on both sides and should be no lack of intensity on either side.

Let’s go Hoyas!

I agree with all of the above. Am sure there will be great intensity and feel that GU should prevail. The team had a breather last week vs. SJU and should be rested and ready. The seed is key because it would be better to play the #4 seed than having to beat Nova and Denver in BET.

I hate to jinx it but at this point I think GU is on its own level between MD and the next level. While the close D and goalie play has met high expectations, the defensive middles have been great, both the LSMs and SSDMs. I think that the defensive midfield is the key to success in today’s game, and our experience, talent and depth there is top level and perhaps below only MD.

My initial instinct would be the same, but something could be said for having better competition as the prelude to the NCAA tournament.

On the other hand, I want to see Georgetown win out to guarantee their best chance at a #2 seed in the tournament.

Looking forward to the game this Friday, should be a fun one under the lights.

I really hope we win out. Gotta own the BE if we're going to be a serious challenger for the national championship. Villanova is a very good team but we do need to dominate and keep the momentum going into the NCAAs.

If you look at the construction of the roster, I think we all realize this is the year. The talent is there clearly. Hopefully the boys can stay focused on the goal and not the expectations. I think this staff and team can. Beating Maryland is another question but getting to MDW, as Big U would say “should be within our grasp not our reach”

While I believe GTown is probably the biggest threat to Maryland, there are a few things that give me pause that they will make MDW or the finals. Their schedule after Princeton has been fairly soft (no fault of their own). They have played zero teams above #15 in the RPI. They have generally beaten those opponents handily, but still… iron sharpens iron, and all that.

The other issue is that in the three big games before that stretch, against Penn, ND, and Princeton, Reilly completely dominated the other team’s FOGO combos (64%, 69%, and 73% respectively). But they won by only two against Penn, and lost by two against Princeton. And McElroy saved 24 shots in the ND game, which they won by five. Notre Dame outshot GTown by 14, despite getting crushed at the faceoff dot.

All of which is to say that GTown is a great team, but the distance between them and teams like Princeton, Yale, Penn, and Rutgers is not that significant. GTown is highly dependent on specialists to beat teams in that tier. Given that they will likely face the #6 or #7 seed in the quarters means they will face a very tough test to make MDW. As long as Reilly is healthy, they should be in good shape.

One of the recent Bracketologies has them playing Harvard in the first round, as the third seed!!! This year is perhaps going to be the most competitive first round we have ever seen. Would love to see Gtown win out to at least be in the conversation for a #2 seed.

But I am getting ahead of myself. This Friday will be a battle as all Gtown Villanova games are. Will be a great test against good competition. I believe the team will be focused on the task at hand.

All good points, but the Hoyas have won each game after Princeton, mainly against solid teams. While Richmond and Lehigh were close, GU was essentially in control throughout. GU beat Utah, Denver and Loyola convincingly, and the lower tier BE games were blowouts. In sum, the team has been prepared and up for each game, a very good sign.

Valid points but as i posted last week, Georgetown had one slip this year, vs Princeton (which is actually more a game they could have won and not a bad loss than a slip up). Only one team in the country has had zero slip ups - Maryland. Georgetown’s one “dud” game is against the 2 or 3 seed as of now. Nobody else can come close to saying that ex Terps. I think the Hoyas are fine as long as they keep focused on the goal and not the expectations.

That’s a good point. It’s college lax. Every team slips up at least once each year - Terps have just performed at another level, and are definitely the exception, not the rule.

Because of their dominance, alot of Terps fans have wanted to see the Terps tested near the end of the season. Because the B1G has some quality at the top of the conference, they got a close game (from the Buckeyes). And they got to play another very good team in Rutgers.

Through no fault of their own, the Hoyas have not had that opportunity. Denver and Loyola are both relatively down this year. Villanova will be interesting, because they really haven’t beaten anyone, but have also played very close games with Penn, Yale, and Brown before losing.

That being said, Georgetown has taken card of business in impressive fashion. And just like Maryland, the loss to Virginia will be great motivation for the Hoyas going into the tournament.

Denver/Nova was a close game. I think its entirely feasible they could beat Denver if those two teams play in the semis.

I was there in person - that defense is suffocating and the offense really moves the ball well at a high speed. Looked like a rare off game at the X, although the Nova FOGO is having a great year. A lot of buzz around town was that Nova was going to pull the upset, but that notion was put too bed by mid 2nd quarter.

Any idea why Hess didn’t play?

Agree regarding the defense, it was outstanding. Gibson Smith was amazing with his coverage, ground balls and clearing, and the knockdowns of passes was great. Bowen and then Mazzone stifled two EMO opportunities with interceptions of passes, and many other Nova possessions ended in weak shots or turnovers.

I also noticed that Hess was out, and thus GU midfield was very shallow, with only #41 as a substitute for most of the game. This was OK with the rest allowed by the SJU game but will need depth in the tourney.

And the offense is so versatile that it is a real headache for the opposition. It seemed like Nova was intent on stopping Watson, but Morin then goes off for 4 goals and Watson winds up with 5 goals anyway. He could easily have had 2-3 more but for the refs calling him in the crease on a made shot, and a few good saves by Nova goalie. McDermott and Haley were quiet yet the offense flourished - what a handful to defend!
