Rutgers beat four teams that won their Conference tournaments. Princeton, Michigan, Marist and Utah. And lost by one to Army when two starters were out.

The tournament needs to expand to 24.

Nah, just eliminate all at-large teams. Have a 9-team tournament of conference champs only. Can't win your conference tournament? Too bad, go home!

That would make the NCAA tournament a bad joke.

Absolutely need a 24 team tournament now. New programs like the Utah’s and michigans have established themselves. The 16 team tourney is outdated

Didn’t make the semifinals in their conference. Maybe move to another conference for lacrosse.

So you want 1/3 of D1 teams to be in the tournament?

Are we all really that desperate for our favorite teams to get participation trophies?

The people who think we need a 24 team tournament should have to explain in detail the 8 teams who should be added to the tournament and why.

Please tell me why North Carolina who lost by like 40 goals in their last 4 games should be in the tournament

Or how about this: the NCAA declares that conference tournaments are part of the NCAA tournament.

Then more than half of D1 teams are already in the tournament!!!

That just cheapens the regular season far too much. It makes lacrosse like basketball was in the 60s and early 70s. Some of the best teams never got a bid.

Amen. People need to stop the whingeing. In my case, I would like Penn to make the tournament. Yes, but they need to earn it. Didn't this year, so they shouldn't get a bid. Too much felicific calculus abounding this time of year.

You're likely right about that:
The NCAA's transformation committee, which has been tasked with modernizing college sports and improving the student-athlete experience, recommended in January to broaden access to Division I championships by allowing more teams to participate in those events. ... The transformation committee advised the NCAA to raise that to 25% in every team sport

25% of 76 D1 teams = 19

My opinion:

Exactly. If we are arguing about who are the last few teams that should make the tournament, that means its the right number.

My thoughts:

1. Notre Dame vs 16. Marist/Delaware
8. Yale vs 9. Michigan

4. UMD vs 13. Army
5. Johns Hopkins vs 12. Bryant

6. Georgetown vs 11. Princeton
3. UVA vs 14. Utah

7. Penn St. vs 10. Cornell
2. Duke vs 15. Richmond

A few repeat matchups from the season but looking at RPI, SOS, and H2H, this feels like the most competitively balanced bracket while also limiting flights as much as possible. 2 isn't a hard limit and this would result in 3. I have a feeling the committee may shuffle the top 3 seeds to eliminate the need for that third flight, but I have ND as the top seed. You could make an argument for any of the top 3 to snatch the top spot, but ND is the only one who doesn't have a loss outside of that group. UMD and Hop can be flipped but it really makes little difference (UMD is just beyond 400 miles from Bryant). I've got Yale with the last seed over Cornell because of the extra top 10 win and a slightly better SOS, but it's close.

The 25% recommendation is for sports that 200+ schools sponsoring the sport. Not lacrosse.

There is a higher likelihood of the NCAA shrinking the tournament than expanding it.

Pretty close! Got the top 8 exactly right, shuffled the opponents of the 3 to 6 seeds:

1. Duke v Delaware/Marist Sun 5
2. Virginia v Richmond Sat 12
3. Notre Dame v Utah Sat 2:30
4. Maryland v Army Sat 7:30

Nope. Either Hop or the Terps have to go to Albany.

I conclude the committee does not take QF attendance into account (unlike the committee in hockey). They shoulda flipped JHU and PSU at 5 and 6 ...

OK, I propose Milliman vs Tillman, best of 10 shots from the half field line on an open net, loser goes to Albany ...
