Labor unions worked hard decades ago to establish higher standards for employment benefits, including their health care plans.
It’s those higher-standard labor union health care benefits that eventually laid the foundations for the “Cadillac” health insurance plans that private employers like mine provide to their employees ...
... the kind of health insurance plan that keeps my special needs daughter alive and healthy.
So, one can probably guess what I think of folks who have a poor understanding of how we have all benefited from the hard fights fought and won by labor unions.

However, if the coronavirus is truly capable of airborne transmission (e.g., through ventilation systems and not just airborne droplets in close proximity), then we are even more screwed.
From The NY Times:
The coronavirus is finding new victims worldwide, in bars and restaurants, offices, markets and casinos, giving rise to frightening clusters of infection that increasingly confirm what many scientists have been saying for months: The virus lingers in the air indoors, infecting those nearby.
If airborne transmission is a significant factor in the pandemic, especially in crowded spaces with poor ventilation, the consequences for containment will be significant. Masks may be needed indoors, even in socially distant settings. Health care workers may need N95 masks that filter out even the smallest respiratory droplets as they care for coronavirus patients.
Ventilation systems in schools, nursing homes, residences and businesses may need to minimize recirculating air and add powerful new filters. Ultraviolet lights may be needed to kill viral particles floating in tiny droplets indoors.
The World Health Organization has long held that the coronavirus is spread primarily by large respiratory droplets that, once expelled by infected people in coughs and sneezes, fall quickly to the floor.
But in an open letter to the W.H.O., 239 scientists in 32 countries have outlined the evidence showing that smaller particles can infect people, and are calling for the agency to revise its recommendations. The researchers plan to publish their letter in a scientific journal next week.

That’s the hypocrisy of that argument. I would. I don’t care for civil service unions at all. A strike should he strategic and risk playing chicken with a entity’s existence, governmental or private sector (think airlines). It’s supposed to be the penultimate statement after all other avenues are exhausted. Now it’s treated like no big deal and screw every other person related until we get our way. Jon Oliver did a terrific piece on how they hijack society and behave as if they don’t care about the jobs they do but rather the paycheck. Would also point to the bankruptcy of Visalia CA directly responsible by said police and fire. Private unions slightly different, there was a need, but not sure the legal system has the right balance. The parallel is draw is the baseball union. Marvin Miller - great guy. Donald Fehr - POS. Current union along with stupid ownership is likely to end that sport.
But I’ve always felt the Democrats were odd in checking their cares about human rights at the border. Globalization generally has lifted many countries but you can’t close down trade border and keep $30-$50/hr jobs in places like Dayton, York PA, Upstate NY for people with AAs who put two pieces of metal together, give defined benefit plans, etc and trade with the rest of the world. If Mexicans happily will do the same work at the same level of quality for 1/3 then some folks don’t deserve to have their jobs protected just because they were born in America.
