The BIG10 does not use replay for challenges.GratefulRed wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2024 11:09 amSports can be so cruel. One day you score the gw in OT, the next you foul out in the first half. NU will play better in the NCAA tournament, and that is where I am talking about the perfect game from someone to defeat them. I could certainly be wrong. But KAH is a very able coach. And you could see that she was appreciative of the effort today, but not the execution. NU still the overall favorite, maybe even by a lot. But beatable.
To hmmm’s point, Hopkins landed body blows early and it was effective. But cross checks and swinging sticks get the officials’ attention. Defenders are more likely to get away with hard fouls if the stick is quiet/vertical and the contact is initiated with the body, as in the play that knocked #27 out of the game. Again, I’m curious…is there any aspect of that play the offensive coach can challenge so refs can see that on the replay? In the ACC final, SU coach KT asked for a review of the goal in which her defender was hit with a stick follow-through. The challenge was for a goal circle violation, even though the play was nowhere near the crease. She won the challenge because the foul was seen on the replay. In the B1G game #27 scored, so I don’t know if there is anything coach TM can challenge? What if he challenged his own goal?
On the whole, I thought the refs did a nice job letting them play. Defenses were allowed to play physically and many dives weren’t rewarded. Players weren’t bailed out with fouls when forcing into traffic. Ground ball scrums were decided by the players. Touch fouls between the 30s didn’t disrupt flow. Still plenty of offense and goals. Great game.

Re: Games Today
Thank goodness for that. Time (not to mention momentum) draining replay reviews are worse than all the green cards put together.
Re: Games Today
If you watch the replay from the second angle on the hit on 27 she was basically punched in the face. I don't know how to post video unfortunately but it was blatant and a pretty prominent head coach thought it was a borderline red card. While I had heard that the Big Ten had chosen to use replay for the tournament while it was rejected for the regular season games, I have not seen anything reviewed in any of the 4 B1G tourney games yet so I'm assuming replay is not being used.GratefulRed wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2024 11:09 amSports can be so cruel. I agree the refs let them play and did not reward a lot of the flopping that went on yesterday. I will ask again though, it's great to not reward them, but a rule was put in this year to give a green card for simulation or embellishment. I've still yet to see one given out. Why isn't the rule being enforced? If a girl goes down and the ref doesn't see a foul, she's embellishing.
I had 3 problems with the refs yesterday, not including that cards were 6-0.
1. The aforementioned hit on 27 on her goal that put Hop up 10-9. It was a blatant shot to the head as she was shooting. At a MINIMUM, it should have been a yellow card and Hop should have been rewarded with possession after the goal as the foul was committed as she shot. If you watch the replay, the ref didn't even call a foul and there was no discussion on whether it should have been a card and possession awarded. There was no ref conference at all on the play.
2. On one of Madison Taylor's goals, she clearly stepped in the crease and then fell into it. The ref right there waved off the goal but was overruled by a ref with a worse angle saying she was pushed. If you watch the replay she was barely touched and stepped on the line before she actually threw herself into the crease. This is another play that should have been reviewed, so my assumption is that replay wasn't an option. Rewatched the game this morning and realized the 2 announcers were too busy fawning over NU all game to even mention that the goal was waved off initially or mention anything about replay.
3. When the game was 12-11 late, Doucette made a save and the ball was sitting in front of the crease. Hopkins #37 had a free path to the GB and as she went to pick it up was pushed directly from behind causing her to fall over the ball. NU ended up picking up the ball and scoring a goal to make it 13-11. It was a clear push from behind.
I'm sure NU fans will say Hopkins was knocking NU players down and it wasn't being called so it is what it is. I will say, I've never seen Izzy flop before like she did yesterday. Maybe she was frustrated because Hopkins had a decent plan for her as shown by her stat line of 1 G on 9 shots and 6 TO.

I feel like that was an extremely harsh red card call? Yellow definitely.Seacoaster(1) wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2024 5:36 pmAnd 10-10 in the 3rd. This is a really good game.

didn't see the red card, but the cross check YC on the fast break was pretty flagrant. When you compare to the non call yesterday in the big 10 game they just aren’t comparable in my opinion. Without question a yellow though.hmmm wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2024 6:22 pmThat's the foul. Yup, the Tigers put the faceguard on her for a good part of the 3rd Quarter, I think (laxlaxlax, please correct me if I'm wrong here), and it seemed to be pretty successful. But she got free a few times and still scored.

Re: Games Today
The Princeton kid definitely deserved a yellow; bad hard foul/cross-check from behind, getting Rohr in nearly full run and splattering her on the turf. I thought the red was a little harsh.hmmm wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2024 6:44 pmYeah.laxlaxlax wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2024 6:24 pmWhen you compare to the non call yesterday in the big 10 game they just aren’t comparable in my opinion. The Northwestern duo -- one of them anyway -- deserved a yellow at least. The shot to the head/neck area was high, very nearly late, and totally out of control in a game in which the rules supposedly place an emphasis on player control of sticks and bodies. But this recklessness is one of the legacies that the Hillers will leave behind when they retire. They molded the game to a level of near violence and got the officiating crews to, by and large, allow it. Hopkins scores here; should have gotten awarded the ball without a draw, and had a chance for another in an exceptionally close game that, even after this predictable travesty, was decided in the final seconds by a great save by Laliberty. Instead, player out for the remainder of the game, I think, and a regular draw.
Re: Games Today
Yeah, I think #8 just had a great day. At one point (possibly just before the half) the commentators said that there had only been 2 scorers for Penn, I’d say that’s pretty good defensively to restrict a team to only having a couple of threats. I know some others did contribute in the second half though but I can’t find the box score yet.Seacoaster(1) wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2024 7:16 pmYup, the Tigers put the faceguard on her for a good part of the 3rd Quarter, I think (laxlaxlax, please correct me if I'm wrong here), and it seemed to be pretty successful. I actually think that the momentum shift in the game was when Penn were ahead by 2 and scored a goal which in my opinion was a charge that wasn’t called (around the 12 goal mark maybe?). The Penn kid turned and slammed into the Princeton defender who was knocked to the ground and Penn got the goal. I have limited tech skills so don’t have the ability to clip it, but to me that no call allows Penn to get ahead.
**editing this as clearly my memory is terrible The game was tied and this goal began the started of the Penn run. DUH
Princeton then didn’t help themselves with the cards late in the game in what was otherwise a close and well fought matchup.
Still hoping that the tigers get an AL bid as I think they can go toe-to-toe with most of the non-seeded/top ranked teams that make the bracket.
