Havlicek Stole the Ball!

Post by OuttaNowhereWregget »

Celts beat Philadelphia 76ers in the 1965 NBA Eastern Division championship game 7.
Most's call of the play has been dubbed "the most famous radio call in basketball history".

Maybe in Boston, but in Philadelphia it’s not. No surprise, but in this town, we think Havlicek committed a foul on the play. Game was in Boston Garden where Red Sauerback notoriously had the refs in his pocket.

Kind of like we call it the Miracle in the Meadowlands, but in New York they call it the Fumble.

BOBBY CLARKE SCORES!!!

Post by OuttaNowhereWregget »

Philadelphia Flyer Bobby Clarke scores OT winner vs Bruins in '74 Cup.
This clip isn't often included but it is a great call by then tandem Gene Hart and Don Earle.

Fun fact - Gene Hart's day job in 1974 was as a high school teacher in South Jersey. Announcing just didn't pay the bills.

Very cool little bit of background info. Thanks.

Was Hart the one screaming, "BOBBY CLARKE SCORES!!" or was it Earle?

One of my all time favorite great calls in sports broadcasting history.

That's Gene Hart. He had a slightly higher pitch, especially in exciting moments.

Hart called the 1970s, 1st version of the Philadelphia Wings, games as well,

with several Flyers on that team, it was a natural fit.

MD lax might shed a couple of years if he watches this clip. Earl was quite the gem. If he was managing a baseball team today he would spend the majority of his time in anger management classes. His chair would be right next to the mild mannered Billy Martin. :D honorable mention to Bobby Knight and Woody Hayes. 8-) Ole Woody trying to make that right hook connect was classic.
I use to be a people person until people ruined that for me.

I'm certain that he found Earls temperament quite disconcerting. I guess angry and disgruntled managers are okay when they are coaching your team and winning. Earl Weaver was any umpires worst nightmare.
