The young pup is quite right. Taft was unremarkable and midpack between their Natty year and Nic Bell's 2nd year. Midpack in NEWest is nothing to be ashamed of, but after all of the televised GEICO games and high production quality game summaries, their reputation precedes them.

I googled those names and found news articles from spring of 2023 about them playing for other schools, not Loomis.

Two notes: Tyler Clayton at Salisbury is a UMass commit, and Ben Wood is definitely enrolled at Deerfield - he was just named MVP for the U18 Team USA that played in the Brogden Cup. Thanks for putting this together.

[MA Lax Fan]

This seems relatively new that PG’s are coming from prep schools and other boarding schools. I know it happened in the past but it seems like it has accelerated.

To me it always seemed to make sense that you had a good athlete, coming from a local HS, who needed another year of growth academically, physically or socially to compete at the D1 level. That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Now it’s reclassified prep school kids taking a PG year.

I could be wrong but I feel many of the PG's are being "stashed on prep schools rosters" rather than the college roster, i.e. they are committed to"X" college but because they don't have a spot for them on the college roster, they are asked to PG with a (Verbal) commitment for the following year (that is usually not reneged on)

The next reason would probably that kids need to improve their academic standing

Next reason would be a year of "maturing"

The last reason would (should) be to increase their chances at a high level D1 or D3. I am not sure how much sense it makes to do a PG year without a commitment. The season is in the spring and by that time, most kids know where they are already going to college by the time they play in there PG year. Im just not sure it is fiscally worth an extra year at Prep just to try and increase your chances. Some of the kids on the list are coming from "less heralded" lacrosse high schools so I suppose they could get a "bump" by playing at a Founders / NE-West school on name alone but again, they wont have played any lax by the time lacrosse commitments are done. Look at this year: 2024's for high level D1 and D3 spots are filled. High D1 has moved on to 2025's

But I dont have hard data or facts to back this up; I am sure there are much more knowledgeble people then me so I am curious to their thoughts.

This seems relatively new that PG’s are coming from prep schools and other boarding schools. I know it happened in the past but it seems like it has accelerated.

To me it always seemed to make sense that you had a good athlete, coming from a local HS, who needed another year of growth academically, physically or socially to compete at the D1 level. That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Now it’s reclassified prep school kids taking a PG year.

Thoughts?

It's certainly not new. It may be a little more common in the past few years, but it also might be that the info is more public than before. Imo there's quite a few reasons why it's easier for a kid who's already in private school to end up as a PG than a public school counterpart.

I still contend that double reclasses are more of a boogeyman than a reality. Based on eligibility rules there's really only about a 45-day window on the calendar for birthdays where a double reclass would be feasible. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of kids across the NEPSAC turning 19 from 9/1-1/1 of the school year. I just doubt many of them started school on a path that would've had that happen in the fall of their sophomore year. Going to college at 17 was young for boys even before parenting got hyper competitive, and that happened long before the current crop of kids hit pre school.

Looking at the ISL kids at Deerfield now, one probably had the "stash" situation justanotherperson referred to with a school that liked him but perhaps late in the process and not with a spot as a 2023. With the other two, one made a position switch his junior spring and the other was injured for his junior year - another recruiting cycle and more development time probably felt necessary to fully showcase their talents.

Makes you wonder about the public school kids who start on top D1 teams and didn’t PG or re-class.

Those kids are becoming more and more of a unicorn but man is it impressive when you see them.
