How about having to go all the way out to Game Farm Road now to watch Baseball as old Hoy Field is about to become another ugly monstrous building. I loved Hoy and watching players hit bombs into the Parking Garage.

Back when I worked on campus, I would take a late lunch on a sunny spring day, grab a couple of hot dogs from the vendor in front of Day Hall, and walk over to watch a couple of innings at Hoy Field...
.
Yup, when I worked at Boyce Thompson, which I absolutely hated, I would sneak out if their was a baseball game at Hoy, and watch. If I ever got caught and got fired, that would have been a blessing as I stated before, I hated my job. Never got caught of course, and finally was able to quit that awful job.
Will you be at the game Sunday? Hope so as I always enjoy seeing you.

I'm hoping to get to the game. See you at the 50 if I do.

I used to grade papers and exams between innings at Hoy Field. I also held office hours there. Some students were upset when they saw the sign outside my office and had to walk over from Warren Hall but most got a kick out of the idea of having an academic discussion while watching baseball.

I tried doing the same thing during midweek lacrosse games but that idea died after one period. Too much happening on the turf for me to be very productive workwise.

As for moving the field, it was inevitable. And also part of a pretty well-thought-out master plan. My dad played baseball on Hoy Field in the 1940's so my allegiance to the program is clear. However, Cornell is first and foremost an academic institution. If they need a new classroom and/or research facility, should that go out at Game Farm Road so that an athletic team can continue to occupy a subpar facility on central campus? Hoy Field is/was a decent baseball field but the locker room and indoor team facilities there leave a lot to be desired, so the team will benefit from the move in many ways. As someone who rarely missed a midweek game, I can honestly say that very few fans will be inconvenienced by the move since very few fans showed up for games, other than on weekends. And since everyone has access to a car on campus these days, students who want to watch baseball will find a way to get alllll the way out to Game Farm Rd. Which is about a quarter mile from the softball facility. The women have been playing out there for 25 years so the Title IX proponent in me has a hard time being upset.

The top of the parking garage was a spectacular place to watch a game, however.

I remember practicing there a few times (but I can't remember why). The ground was hard packed clay, and there was a funny greenish light due to the roof. I also remember a night practice there. The lighting was not great. One time a friend and I went there for a pre-season catch, and we had to watch out for a hammer thrower who was also doing independent training.

I was surprised how fast it was taken down. I didn't think that its presence took space away from others uses.

Bacon cage was replaced with the parking garage/pressbox, wasn't it?

Yes, it was used by everyone for all purposes, I remember the polo team using it also.

And I agree, it was demolished in a matter of days.

Indeed, it was replaced by the parking garage.

From Nobles vs. McDonough. Matty Tully is coming next year:

Terry Foy
@TerenceFoy
Final: @MCDLaxScores
8
@NoblesBVL
5

Nobles got out to a 4-1 lead, then Luke Miller (@NDlacrosse
) scored the game’s last three goals to break open a 5-5 tie.

Nobles G Matt Tully (@CornellLacrosse
) played one of the best games I’ve seen a HS goalie play.

And AJ Nikolic, also arriving next year. From NLFrankings.com

AJ Nikolic ’23, attack/midfield/whatever he wants to play, Malvern Prep – Cornell – NLF No. 28 ’23

The NLF’s ’23 rankings are overdue for an update, but you can be very certain that Nikolic will be much higher than No. 28 in the next ones. It sure seems like he’s overtaken the title as the best player in the state of Pennsylvania. There’s nothing that he can’t do. Against Bullis, he scored a pair of goals off of Michael Ortlieb (Big 4 HHH) feeds, including a ridiculous behind-the-back goal on the left post that was eerily reminiscent of goals he used to score off of Penn State‘s Will Peden‘s passes two years ago.

Earlier, Nikolic hammered home a stepdown. He can feed, pass, play the faceoff wings, initiate, score off-ball, whatever. Nikolic leads by example, and you can tell that his teammates gravitate towards him. He was primarily an attackman last year after the Friars graduated the likes of Peden, Eric Spanos (Maryland) and Colin McGill (Dartmouth). This year, Malvern lost midfielders Army commit John Majka to a torn ACL and Maryland commit Ryan Falkenstein (Maryland) a torn MCL and PCL, so Nikolic finds himself back in the midfield. No matter what, he’s incredibly impactful.

“It’s whatever Coach wants,” Nikolic said. “I’m used to attack now. I played middie my whole life. Whatever Coach needs, I’m there to play.”

Between Tully and Piacentini, who's a junior at Lawrenceville, looks like we have terrific goalie prospects in the pipeline.

The Big Red scored with 30 seconds left but the clock ran out before they could tie it. BU prevails 2-1. Congrats to Big Red men's hockey for a courageous showing and an Elite Eight appearance.

Valliant effort for the Big Red. Another exceptional defensive showing; just couldn't really generate much on the offensive end until late in the game.

Cornell was #1 in the country going into the postseason when the pandemic hit; nice to see Schafer get them right back into the discussion among the nation's elite. Superb season...

Am hoping the blow hard wind gods are being a little gentler with those in the Kopf today than they're being in the Cuse.
Wouldn't put any money on that though...pretty gusty winds.
