They put up a good fight. Some lack of poise and maybe lack of finer coaching at the end hurt them in the final 3 minutes. However for a team that’s playing only their second game in as many years there’s a lot of positives. Have think this being the Drew Kelleher memorial game have them some extra juice.

Amherst looks like they’ll be a competitor this year based off this game

MEDFORD - Junior Kurt Bruun led the way with six goals as the #3 Tufts University men's lacrosse team held off #18 Amherst College 18-14 in a NESCAC game Sunday afternoon at Bello Field.

Tufts led by scores of 7-3 at the end of the first quarter, 9-4 early in the second and 12-7 early in the third. However, Amherst would cut it to a one-goal game (15-14) with six minutes remaining in regulation. The Jumbos secured the victory by tallying the last three goals.

Junior Jack Boyden recorded seven points for Tufts with three goals and four assists, while senior Camden Kelleher finished with two goals and three assists. Sophomore Conner Garzone earned the win in goal with 15 saves.

Amherst's Mitch Likins was a key factor in the visitors getting themselves back in the game. The freshman goalie entered early in the second quarter and made 15 saves in 41+ minutes of action. Junior Brock Gonzalez recorded five goals with two assists for the Mammoths and junior Tanyr Krummenacher scored five times for Amherst.

The Mammoths had early leads of 2-1 and 3-2 as Gonzalez scored twice in the first seven minutes. However, the Jumbos finished the first with five in a row led by a pair from Bruun for the 7-3 advantage.

Kelleher set up two goals in the first half of the second quarter to help Tufts take a 10-5 advantage. After back-to-back tallies by Gonzalez and Krummenacher, and one from Tufts' Boyden the game went to intermission with the hosts leading 11-7.

Likins would make seven saves in the third quarter when Amherst out-scored Tufts 4-2 to make it a 13-11 game. Krummenacher scored man-up with 1:04 remaining in the third for the two-goal deficit which was the closest that the Mammoths had been since trailing 5-3 in the first. Bruun had two for Tufts in the third to help keep the hosts in the lead.

Krummenacher would score three times in the fourth quarter to bring Amherst within a goal. After scores by Jumbos Kelleher and Bruun sandwiched a goal by Krummenacher to put Tufts at a 15-12 advantage, Krummenacher scored two in a row 70 seconds apart and it was 15-14 with 6:10 remaining.

The Mammoths turned the ball over three times when they had possession with a chance to tie it before Jumbo sophomore Kevin Christmas scored assisted by Boyden at 2:43 for a 16-14 Tufts lead. Garzone made a key save after an Amherst face-off win and Tufts senior Matt Lane picked up a ground ball in a scramble during the clear and fired a shot past Likins for a 17-14 margin. Tufts freshman Charlie Tagliaferri scored late into an open net with Likins out on defense to cap the scoring.

Freshman Joey Waldbaum (pictured) caused three turnovers, picked up six groundballs and assisted a goal for Tufts. Senior Taggart Eymer and junior Kyle Adelman both caused three TO's and picked up three ground balls.

Amherst freshman Nicholas Koff took 33 face-offs and won 19. Classmate Lawson Laverty collected three ground balls and caused a turnover.

Early weekend predictions for NESCAC matchups:

Friday:
Amherst @ Bates: 16-4 Amherst. This game should be an easy one for Amherst down in Maryland. Bates is having an off year and this should get out of hand early. Amherst should handle business and get their bench involved before playing Gettysburg on Saturday.

Saturday:
Hamilton @ Conn: 13-11 Hamilton. This is a big game to watch this weekend. Hamilton has shown they can score when they need to. Conn has had a lot of close games and looks like they have a rebuilt team.

Wesleyan @ Colby: 18-9 Wesleyan. Wesleyan's offense has been putting up huge numbers. They have not played any real talent so far but they should be able to handle Colby easily.

Middlebury @ Trinity: 10-8 Middlebury. This is another great game to watch this weekend. Middlebury's offense has been struggling so far. Trinity's offense has also been struggling. Expect this one to be low scoring and close.

Williams @ Bowdoin: 14-11 Williams. Another great game. Bowdoin's fogo Bernard might be the top in the NESCAC so expect a lot of possessions for the Polar Bears. Williams offense has been pretty stagnant this year so their defense will have to come up with early stops.

With 11 goals on 69 shots in the game against RPI, I'd say your analysis is the clubhouse leader for understatement of the year.

Love the fact that some of the NESCAC teams are playing in the Mustang Classic but I am bewildered at the reality that two New England teams are driving to Maryland to play each other. Really too bad that they could not get things scheduled so that each of them played two non-NESCAC teams.

With conference schedules being set sometimes a couple seasons in advance, it probably isn't an option to completely move the conference games for the weekend. The best part of this set up is one of the teams is forfeiting a home game to pick up an excellent out of conference game on the same weekend. The way the NCAA Tournament is set up now you do end up playing 2 games in 2 days so it's a great preparation for the post season that all these teams are eyeing.

While I agree it's tough for 2 teams to travel that far to play one another, the benefit of another top 20 opponent is probably worth it in the long run

I don't put any stock in anything Devitte says (and certainly don't pay for the subscription, this ranking being clear evidence I should just send $119/year to a Nigerian prince as better use of my money), but from what I understand Bowdoin/Midd/Jeffs were punished in this poll due to their lack of competition in 2021. Keep succeeding to spite the administration. Glad to see the men with the guidance of Woods+staff make such a strong statement early on that most would not have anticipated.

Superb sportsmanship demonstrated by Wesleyan goal scorers for about a quarter and a half, and then the chirping from the cards slowed after the Mules kept on punching back (figuratively, would not have blamed them for a literal punch given some of the taunting). Goalie and F/O play were night and day compared to Tufts debacle/trainwreck/massacre..so is Tufts that good, did Colby not get off the bus, or is Wesleyan not that good? Quick turnaround for the Mules and Ephs as their rescheduled game is Monday in western Mass. Congrats to Coach Mason and the Polar Bears on a strong start to his tenure. Was the cancelling of 2021 not posturing, but rather a motivation tactic by administrators given Midd, Bowdoin, and the Jeffs all in the win column?? I'm sure they will take credit if any is offered their way.

Bowdoin 17, Williams 13
It is apparent that this is an off year for Williams. A bit of a shame. Ex-freshman of the year Jake Hasse just can’t seem to get things going this year (only 1g, 2a today). That being said, this Bowdoin team is tough. Maybe the best FOGO in the country.

Colby 10, Wesleyan 9
Interesting game in Waterville. Very very even game. Wesleyan still has not proved themselves against any real competition, although I expect them to connect the dots soon. Anybody know what the deal is with Jack Raba?

Middlebury 15, Trinity 8
This Middlebury team came to play today. Broke out of their shell today. Billy Curtis with a strong bid for NESCAC ROY (5g, 2a). Jack Sheehan and Taylor Forbes both stepping up with several assists in this game. Trinity is a team that still needs to find identity. Their one shining light is Connor McCulloch at attack but he needs some help.

Tufts 18, Stevens 5
Expected. Mac Bredahl with 3g 5a and still the favorite for POY. Loved to see him get lots of teammates involved.

Bates 3, York 7 (at half)
This was never really a game and I doubt that the bobcats will be able to claw back.

Would love to know how the Amherst game went vs. G’burg.
