"Myles Jones had 16 goals a freshman"

yeah, 16 goals is pretty good! especially for a freshman. how many mids had more than that total for hopkins last year? i know you know the answer, and one guy who had equal that amount was a freshman.
just for giggles on your examples
--- jones also had 3 middies on his team that year, the firsts, who essentially scored 50 points apiece! and class who had over 20, and walsh over 30 i think on his line! that maybe had a lot less to do with not being ready to play division 1 midfielder than having a lot of talent there at the position. and he still got great production. not nearly what he was capable of as he improved his game and more time became available.
--- kelly had the same issue with big production playing on the 1s. was he ready to be a division 1 middie? i don't know, but given the guys playing were throwing up big numbers, breaking in on that would've been tough.
--- austin sims, inexplicably in hindsight (but with foresight to some), was being run out as a defensive midfielder only as a freshman (though he did it well). princeton also has a long line of middies in the last 10 years who have gotten on the field and produced as freshmen, played well, even led the team in scoring. you know their names.
--- virginia, same thing. the production of the majority of them (about 12 of them that i can think of in last 10-11 years) ran along the same lines as jones, occasionally better or worse give or take, & a couple who were 2nd line guys... the majority essentially handled the transition to college just fine. production grew from the good ones, but they weren't out of their element. just not dominating yet.
--- salcido as you said was a walk on, and a small one, from florida at syracuse.

certainly your point (and mine) about players having more productive seasons later on is valid. it's also logical. it's also very similar to every other position that i can think of, except maybe fogo in a lot of cases and goalie in some cases. maybe ssdm's? most, if not all, attackmen who manage to see the field see their point production escalate after their freshman year, even as they start to draw more difficult marks. defenders tend to get better. including lsm's unless they're already supernatural.
maybe what the overall sentiment is about is that it takes a while to dominate the position. that's probably true. and there may be guys, though they're pretty rare, that are able to have a larger impact at other spots early. in particular, i do think you can get 15-20 points from a lot of guys if you run them out there enough in the midfield. you can get 30-40 points from an attackman. but getting stops, in the cage or protecting it, can be a much more valuable thing if you don't have the personnel otherwise without inserting a talented and ready freshman.

IL coming out with their list of top units

2019 Face-Off Yearbook: Top Specialist Units
The only B1G listed is Penn State at 3

FO: Gerard Arceri
SSDM: Brian Townsend
LSM: Tommy Wright

Face-off specialist Gerard Arceri returns as one of the best specialists in the game, a winner of 68.1 percent of his draws last season. Penn State returns a core group of utility middies and poles forming their rope unit and are all effective two-way players, including middies Bobby Burns, Brian Townsend and Nick McEvoy and longpoles Tommy Wright and Kevin Fox.
I like Md group
FO: Shockley/Henningsen
SSDM: Puglise
LSM: Brozowski

2019 Face-Off Yearbook: Top Midfield Units
They have Ohio State at 5
Tre Leclaire
Jack Jasinski
Jackson Reid
Ohio State’s midfield looks to be the team’s biggest strength going into 2019. Junior Tre Leclaire (26G, 11A) has one of the hardest shots in all of Division I and is a player capable of playing both midfield and attack. Senior Jack Jasinski (17G, 11A) is the nimble one of the group, a playmaker well known for his quickness and change of direction. Jackson Reid (23G, 5A) is the crafty scorer. The sophomore was a big-time contributor for the Buckeyes down the stretch, scoring at least three points in their last four regular season games.
2019 Face-Off Yearbook: Top Attack Units
2 teams listed here
Hopkins at 1
Kyle Marr
Cole Williams
Joey Epstein
Johns Hopkins did graduate its quarterback in Shack Stanwick, but return a capable duo and bring in the nation’s No. 1 recruit to the attack unit. Kyle Marr (41G, 17A) returns after leading the team in points last season. He’s an efficient lefty shooter, but is also the team’s top returning assister. Junior Cole Williams (35G, 14A) had a breakout sophomore campaign and, at 6-5 and 210 lbs., should resume duties as a match-up conundrum. Joey Epstein, the No. 1 incoming freshman, could be the third starter after a productive fall, although junior Forry Smith came back looking much improved and will battle for that spot.
Penn State at 5
Grant Ament
Mac O’Keefe
Dylan Foulds
Expectations will be high for the Penn State attack with the return of Grant Ament. The redshirt junior missed all of 2018 with an injury, but had an electric 62-point campaign in 2017 as the Nittany Lion’s initiator. Flanking Ament on the left is Mac O’Keefe (35G, 11A), one of the best shooters in Division I. Dylan Foulds (21G, 11A), one of the team’s best athletes, was the righty attackman last season and should return to that spot after starting there in the fall.
I would put MD in there. Bernhardt and Wisnauskas and the third still to revealed. I would not be surprised to see Bubba stay on the field the whole game but be listed as a Midfield.

btn2go has added some home OSU and PSU games to their schedule in February to go with the home Rutgers and UMd game:
https://www.btn2go.com/schedule?date=20 ... 6&sids=MLX

so for $9.95 you get your team, and for $14.95 you get all for a month.

A lot of the games occur at the same time or overlap some, I wonder if you can watch later on btn2go?

Maryland-Bucknell is on BTN, which likely means a trip to CP. Preliminary forecast calls for a high of 40 here on Saturday. Hope it's a little warmer down there.

It may be warmer on the sunny side of Byrd...for me it's a walk outside at noon decision and if it's not cold schlep down to College Park...

Army at Rutgers 12pm btn2go
Penn State at Stony Brook 12 pm
Maryland at Penn 1pm
OSU at UMass 1pm steaming on LSN
Loyola at Johns Hopkins 1pm

March 16 DU@OSU most likely not included because of B1G hoops ladies and or men's. Possibly wrestling.

Feb 26 weekley awards
Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week: Jack Myers OSU
Defensive Player of the Week: Roman Puglise UMd
Specialist of the Week: Justin Inacio OSU

https://bigten.org/news/2019/2/26/maryl ... wards.aspx

I thought they might just honor Jack Myers as Freshman of the Week and then honor Wisnauskas or Ament as Offensive Player of the Week.

22-7 on the year after Marylands loss to notre dame. Losses to Loyola x2, towson, drexel, yale, notre dame, army.
Despite todays loss, I'd feel the best right now if I were a terp fan followed by penn state especially if they can beat cornell and then maybe hopkins. Everyone else has a lot of work to do w 5/6 teams having key ooc games next weekend and despite OSUs high ranking theres two tiers right now when you look at who they've beaten.

maryland albany 3/9 nova 3/16 unc 3/23 qw thus far colgate, richmond, navy
penn state cornell 3/8 qw-villanova
hopkins cuse 3/9 uva 3/23 quality wins thus far-princeton, unc

Ohio State denver 3/16, ND 3/23. Quality wins thus far-none
Rutgers-princeton 3/9 syracuse 3/16 quality wins thus far-none
michigan yale 3/10 notre dame 3/19 qw thus far-none
