Keep hoping that Trump will get a clue, Salty.

Nope, Trump can't order states to close or to open. He can recommend only.
Unless what, martial law?
forcing people out of their homes???

He does have extraordinary powers to tell businesses to re-direct their output, but hasn't used that power to any real effect. He does have the ability to federalize production and distribution of key elements, testing, PPE, ventilators, etc...but they haven't done it.

And he does have an enormous bully pulpit. He used it to enormously ill effect.

He's going to continue to flail and flail and flail. He'll whine and whine and whine about how awful the press is for not recognizing what a Very Stable Genius he really is and he will blame absolutely anyone and everyone for his own shortcomings.

and guys like you will keep giving all that a pass...because you agree with some of his policies...

I believe he has declared a national state of emergency and has the right to do so if he has not already excersized it. As such his self imposed power is virtually unlimited and his right wing courts will happily rubber stamp every edict he declares.

The numbers are looking very good, with a clear peak in deaths signaled. Assuming this continues, total deaths look like they will come in at about 37,500. It could be back to 0 new deaths by the end of May. Assumes social distancing and quarantining continue. Only a single rain cloud that I see in the numbers - 123,000 new infections today nationwide. This is 3 times the number of infections seen on any other single day. Very strange.

I am surprised things turned this quickly (see the chart). I suspect Fauci and friends are as well. I have to wonder if something else isn't at play. There has been a lot of talk about ventilator protocols perhaps doing more harm than good. Makes me wonder if in recent days, the docs haven't dialed back usage of ventilators.

Things look much better than a week ago.

nah, nothing to worry about with these guys.
After 3 mos of whining about lack of Presidential leadership & dumping everything on the Governors, all of a sudden the WH press corps are states rights advocates. ..

The WH is going to give the Governors the political cover they need by providing CDC data about which zip codes are safe to open up & when.
If there's a second wave, they can blame Trump. If not, they can take the credit.

Yeah. Shame on Trump for making the Governors & Mayors do their jobs. He's making a bunch of them into heroes.
Cuomo, Newsom & Hogan have never gotten so much positive PR.

South Dakota’s governor resisted ordering people to stay home. Now it has one of the nation’s largest coronavirus hot spots.

As governors across the country fell into line in recent weeks, South Dakota’s top elected leader stood firm: There would be no statewide order to stay home.

Such edicts to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus, Gov. Kristi L. Noem said disparagingly, reflected a “herd mentality.” It was up to individuals — not government — to decide whether “to exercise their right to work, to worship and to play. Or to even stay at home.”

And besides, the first-term Republican told reporters at a briefing this month, “South Dakota is not New York City.”

But now South Dakota is home to one of the largest single coronavirus clusters anywhere in the United States, with more than 300 workers at a giant pork-processing plant falling ill. With the case numbers continuing to spike, the company was forced to announce the indefinite closure of the facility Sunday, threatening the U.S. food supply.

Ooooh. Solid question.

I think this falls under "even the appearance of impropriety......"
i asked this question many years ago on LP. the consensus was- and i agree- that this practice is just as egregious because your fingers (which presumably have been in/near the mouth) are on the reverse end of the dipping instrument.

Cuomo, Nusome & Hogan have never gotten so much positive PR.

Their jobs (especially someone like Gov Cuomo or Mayor De Blasio) would be a lot easier if the Jackass-In-Chief wouldn't issue visas to those who contaminate the public and spread death. Responsbility always goes to the top and his State department should have denied visas to the European travellers who brought the contamination with them. And for those who did enter, the CDC's quarantine stations should have done a better job of excluding infected people.

man, invoking the constitution in allowing states to make the call. then invoking the constitution to reverse authority.

meanwhile, the other side spends however long on the first leg demanding that federal authority is invoked. then asserts that authority doesn't exist when it's flipped.

can't make this **** up.

i almost would have thought you were from mars if you laid this scenario out. or at least tijata.

almost.

I have been taking the GMT daily data from the Manchester web site. The graph is mine. Shows two curves. One showing total deaths to date and the other daily deaths in 24 hour period, midnight to midnight GMT. Both curves are 6th order polynomial fits to the relevant series data. Simple Excel spreadsheet. The total deaths to date is plotted against the vertical scale on the left. Daily deaths are plotted against the vertical scale on the right. The horizontal axis is the day number since the first death. Does not show any infection data. Deaths only.

All the "dots" - orangish are for the daily 24 hour death data.

I was wondering about the ventilators also. Someone posted an article where more oxygen may be more beneficial....the more cases, the more the doctors learn.

The problem with ventilators is they are hard on the heart. They can also be hard on the longs, depending on the compliance of the lungs. Simply supplying oxygen without the artificial breathing provided by the ventilator may be better. Some docs think laying patient on stomach is preferred to laying on back. Yup it is a learning process.
