Best player in your schools history

Post by Bigdawg69 »

It’s the off-season. Watched the chronicles of Syracuse documentary on YouTube and got me curious as to who everyone thinks is the GOAT to come through their school? Great video btw if anyone who hasn’t checked it out yet.

For Yale, I would say Jon Reese with Ben Reeves as a close second.

Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, Malcolm

Re: Best player in your school’s history—Johns Hopkins (Attack)

Post by DocBarrister »

Johns Hopkins has had so many great players that the question needs to be answered by position.

First up … attack.

I nominate Jack Turnbull:

3x First-Team AA
1932 National Championship
1932 Olympic Gold Medal in Lacrosse
Died as a Lt. Col. during action in WWII
Namesake of the Lt. Col. J.I. Turnbull Award (Outstanding Attackman)
National Lacrosse Hall of Fame

Obviously, numerous other worthy Johns Hopkins attackmen.

For Denver, it has to be Trevor Baptiste. 4-Time First Team AA, one of only six to do it. Helped leda Denver to 2015 NCAA title as a freshman. Should have won the Tewaararton. Revolutionized the face-off position...

Princeton- goalie Scott Bacigalupo

He was the main reason the program became great. What an athlete!

Pretty tough category … Johns Hopkins has had so many great midfielders.

My nomination for best Hopkins midfielder (and I think he only played a couple of years for Hopkins) … Ray Greene.

Main reason … he was named as a First Team AA “Center” for Drexel in 1943. Then he served two years in the Navy as a Lt. Commander during WWII. Four years after being named a First-Team AA at Drexel, he made Third-Team AA midfield in 1947, this time at Johns Hopkins. Finally, in 1948, he was named a First-Team AA midfield at Hopkins.

A midfielder who bookended two First-Team AA seasons five years apart at two different schools with service in a World War in between. Wow.

Plus:

1947 and 1948 National Champions
All-Time Mt. Washington Team
All-Time Johns Hopkins Team
National Lacrosse Hall of Fame

Apologies to the great Dr. Del Dressel and many other great Hopkins midfielders.

Again, many worthy Johns Hopkins candidates, but c’mon … it has to be Dave Pietramala.

3x First Team AA
2x William C. Schmeisser Award (Outstanding Defenseman)
1989 Lt. Raymond Enners Award (Outstanding Player)
1987 National Championship
All-Time Johns Hopkins Team
2x All-World
Lacrosse Magazine All-Century Team
National Lacrosse Hall of Fame

Plus, Pietramala had a HOF-caliber head coaching career.

Not just the best defenseman in Johns Hopkins history, but the best defenseman in the history of college lacrosse.

It’s like choosing between a Rolls Royce and a Bentley.

Who was the best Johns Hopkins goalie of all time, Mike Federico or Larry Quinn?

There’s no wrong choice here, but I’ll give the edge to Mike Federico:

3x First-Team AA
3x Ensign C. Markland Kelly Award (Outstanding Goalie)
3x National Championship
All-Time Johns Hopkins Team
NCAA Silver Anniversary Team
National Lacrosse Hall of Fame

With apologies to the Mercedes Benz of Johns Hopkins goaliedom, Quint Kessenich.

Ray Greene was tremendous,

so I’ve been told,
so I’ve read.

Interesting question for sure.

For Syracuse your likely to get multiple different answers.

I assume the top two are Gary Gait and Mike Powell with some outside votes for Jim Brown (for those who were lucky enough to see him play).

Tough call you could argue Gait or Powell and I think both would be correct.

Yup, and that's going to be heavily influenced by one's age and how much they saw him play.
For those who saw them both play a lot there is no question about who changed the game
(for the better) with creativity and style of play the most though. Think the Powells will (do)
say the same.
It's all good.

Coach Scott said that Jim Brown was the best he ever saw.

I played with Stockton Buck on the LILC.He was a terrific player,a nice guy yet rather quiet. Most of us thought he played a for Syracuse with Ron Fraser and Dick Findlay.

The part about the gaits in the documentary was unreal. How Roy jr did that favor for the youth Canadian coach about 6 years prior. Then gets a call in 1986 about these 2 Canadian twins 6’2 200 could move like deer. Totally changed the game and the first to bring canadien players to the states for field lax
