Upcoming 2021 Championship changes

Post by RedFromMI »

From the document available on the NCAA.org website:
2021 NCAA Division II Men’s Lacrosse Championship Preliminary-Round Information and Bid Checklist

Introduction

Given current health and safety concerns related to COVID-19, all Spring2020-21preliminary-round competition will be conducted at predetermined sites, rather than at traditional non-predetermined sites. The information below outlines details related to the conduct of the championship. Please pay particular attention to the Return to Championship Guidelines document found in the Bid Checklist section below. This document highlights all additional measures that must be taken to ensure a healthy and safe environment for championship competition and information contained in this addendum will take precedence over that found in the Host Operations Manual, should differences exist. In order to be considered for hosting opportunities, it is required that a site be able to meet these obligations. Bids for predetermined preliminary round will be accepted beginning on March 17, 2021through April 5, 2021. Predetermined preliminary host sites will be announced the week of April 16,2021. Should national health and safety conditions necessitate changes to this plan, the NCAA reserves the right to adjust accordingly. Hosting guidelines and timelines will be updated and communicated as quickly as possible, should adjustments be necessary.

Selections

Selections for the 2020-21NCAA Division II Men’s Lacrosse Championship will be announced Sunday, May 9 via web stream on ncaa.com. It is not a requirement that sites be selected to compete in the championship in order to host. By submitting a bid you are saying you will host even if your institution is not in the championship.

Preliminary-Round Schedule.

First Round/Quarterfinals: Friday, May 14, 2021 (1 game -#5 vs #4)and Sunday, May, 16, 2021 (2 games - #3 vs #2, #4/5 vs #1)
Two pods of 5 teams each.

Semifinals: Sunday, May 23, 2021 or Saturday, May 22, 2021 (if conflict) (2 games)
So the first round will be at two different sites - all five from the South and all five from the North at each respectively. Host sites will be announced in a couple of weeks. It is even possible that the chosen sites will not be at a location different from all of the participants in a pod.

Hmmm interesting.

With these predetermined locations, a lower seed team might get home-field advantage.

This is the same procedure that D2 used for basketball. It would not surprise me if baseball and softball are considering the same format.

Mercyhurst for the 1st round????

As of now, they aren't allowing visiting team's fans.

Have they changed their mind on that?

Doesn't matter.

1) Who knows who else applied to be a site.

2) Mercyhurst is one of the few D2 schools that have hosted NCAA events this past year. Which means they are equipped to handle the traffic and testing protocols of NCAA events. According to their website, they hosted the D1 Women's Hockey Final 4 and an NCAA D2 Wrestling Super Regional previously this year.

I thought it might go to Adelphi, because they have the facilities.

I don't think the other Northern schools in the running for the playoffs, Seton Hill, Mercy and Le Moyne, have the space or facilities to host 5 teams in 1 weekend.
