I clicked that link and my phone had some major malfunctions. Not sure if the link is safe or if it was a coincidence but I googled it and found another article about it - https://www.algemeiner.com/2023/10/02/u ... sh-center/

Michigan WLax Player Suspended In Anti-Semitic Incident?

The Jewish Chronicle

"University of Michigan disciplines athletes after campus Jewish centre vandalised.
Two students have been suspended from their sports teams following the antisemitic defacement.

BY FLORENCE BEAN
OCTOBER 03, 2023

Two athletes at a US university have been disciplined for allegedly spray-painting antisemitic graffiti outside a Jewish centre on their campus. The University of Michigan students are believed to have vandalised the on-campus Jewish resource centre in broad daylight in August, also daubing homophobic slurs on the pavement in front of the building.
Footage captured by security cameras was shared by the local police force, which asked the public to help identify the two figures seen.

A male member of the university’s ice hockey team, the Wolverines, and a female member of its lacrosse team, have been named by US non-profit organisation, StopAntisemitism as the students responsible, according to American news site The Algemeiner.

Ice hockey player Johnny Druskinis has reportedly been suspended indefinitely from the sports team, while Megan Minturn has apparently been suspended, though not removed from her team.

On Friday, university newspaper The Michigan Daily, quoted a spokesperson for the hockey team, who said: “Johnny Druskinis is no longer on the Michigan Hockey roster, following a violation of team rules.” They did not provide details regarding which rules he broke.

StopAntisemitism CEO Liora Rez told The Algemeiner: “Removal from the hockey team is not enough. Antisemitism is prevalent on college campuses across the US, and the University of Michigan has a responsibility to either suspend or even expel this student if they are truly serious about fighting bigotry.”

This incident is the second reported act of antisemitism at the University of Michigan in recent months. In another incident over the summer, a fraternity house was graffitied with a swastika and homophobic slur on two windows and the front door.

The University of Michigan previously scored a C in StopAntisemitism’s 2022 campus climate report, which examined the best and worst universities for Jewish students based on how universities treated antisemitic incidents.

There was a 41 per cent increase in antisemitic incidents on US university campuses from 2021 to 2022, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

The University of Michigan has been contacted for comment."

For what it is worth, The Ann Arbor police clarified there was no antisemitic graffiti; instead saying it was graffiti of male genitalia and a homophobic slur. Not that this makes it okay or necessarily better in any regard. Just a point of clarification from the original post. I am hopeful these young folks were heavily intoxicated, had no idea they were defacing a Jewish building, and this is something they can grow from. Based on the hockey team dismissal, I fear my hypothetical is likely wrong.

Best part of the article is the statement released by the Jewish Resource Center:

"The vandalism found at the JRC was offensive and disrespectful, but did not include any overt anti-semitic symbols (like swastikas). We have been in contact with those responsible and received a private apology, as well as a subsequent public apology. The public apology took place on Shabbat, in front of over 350 people. We deliberately chose Shabbat for the public apology, knowing it would not be recorded, and thus not contribute to further public attacks. We feel continued news coverage of this incident is unwarranted and unfortunate. From our perspective, it was put to rest weeks ago.

Echoing the Rabbi’s Shabbat night message: this vandalism took place during the Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur season. While the theme of Rosh Hashana is judgment, the counter balancing theme of Yom Kippur is understanding and forgiveness. As far as the JRC is concerned, these students aren’t bad people and certainly don’t need to have their lives ruined. While they made a poor choice, they sincerely apologized, and we have high confidence they won’t repeat such actions ever again."

Over and done.

Power of forgiveness. If we all had our lowest moments in life published for the world to see…

Good for the kids of the JRC. A remarkable amount of grace and class. In an era of ruining people to gain public clout, they chose to lean in and teach their fellow students. Kudos to them.
