Esper discussed this in detail in one of his interviews. He & Milley had a Pentagon General assigned to be Vindman's guardian angel, in daily contact. Esper & Milley stood their ground & Trump backed down, rather than reject the Army's entire 0-6 promotion list which would require the entire promotion board to re-convene. Some of Vindman's Army mates may not have trusted him going forward, but that's on Vindman. If Biden was elected, which looked likely, Vindman was golden.

By choosing to be carried out on his shield, Vindman now has more influence, fame & future earning power than had he remained on active duty. He made the same calculation that any vet eligible for retirement makes when deciding when to punch out. Every year you stay is one less year you can earn from another gig & still get your pension which tapers each year you stay & plateaus at 30 years.

Is this supposed to be a gotcha? ‘Guns’ are mostly for hunting and *home* defense. If you know security is already tight at an event, like this one, you’d generally feel pretty safe and there’s be zero need for self defense via a gun.
