Dune was absolutely mesmerizing. The world-building, cast, visuals and sheer immensess of it all. Timothee Chalamet was great, but Stellan Skarsgaard as Baron Harkonnen was INCREDIBLE. Cannot wait until the 2nd film, exploring the 2nd half of the novel. Way too expensive to be all in one film. Sandworm's are just fascinating.

Joe - do you need to have read the book or can you you go in blind and enjoy this?

Might be a bit hard to follow if you are not familiar with the book first. It is an epic but very esoteric story.

Saw it last night as well. Had read the book way before the 80s movie which was really a failure in capturing Herbert’s vision.

The new movie chose correctly to use enough time to just cover the first half of the admittedly long original book (actually the first of a series of novels). Gorgeous cinematography and F/X. I hope there are enough proceeds to do the second half, as they are relying on the money from the first to do the second.

Read the book over seeing the older movie version. Then you will have a better handle on the whole story.

As far as enough info to see the movie without reading the whole book you can read the following intro paragraphs from the Wikipedia article on the novel:

Dune is a 1965 science-fiction novel by American author Frank Herbert, originally published as two separate serials in Analog magazine. It tied with Roger Zelazny's This Immortal for the Hugo Award in 1966,[2] and it won the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel.[3] It is the first installment of the Dune saga; in 2003, it was cited as the world's best-selling science fiction novel.[4][5]

Dune is set in the distant future amidst a feudal interstellar society in which various noble houses control planetary fiefs. Re-watched Basic Instinct last night for the first time in decades. Michael Douglas returns to The Streets of san Francisco, not with Karl Malden, but rather with the scorchingly sexy Sharon Stone. Damn. Works in car chase scenes worthy of Steve McQueen's Bullitt. Almost pornographic in parts, but there is so much more.

Really puts the royals in a bad light if any light at all.

Lady Di turns out to be much more of a mess too than I ever imagined.

But, her love and devotion to those two princes was unbounded.

Saw two great films recently…the original Nightmare Alley….Tyrone Power was sensational. Great movie. I want to see the remake.

Good fighting. I also enjoyed the scenes filmed on location in Kensington, the one part of Philly that I know fairly well. The old gym has been sold for housing development and I believe the tavern closed. Adrienne's pet shop has been razed and the lot there remains empty. Rated only 2.5 stars but I thought it deserved a little better 3.5 perhaps. Very entertaining, if anything kinda under rated as it portrayed a lot of human drama as well as action. The late Tommy Morrison played his role very well.
