For a long time, I thought the max was:

-one head coach
-two full-time assistants
-one volunteer assistant

However, do some staffs have three full-time assistants these days?

They changed the rule recently to allow three full-time assistants. This doesn't require an entire topic. Use Google

And if "they" collude to limit the number of coaches, there is a really active topic currently focused on players.

The original limits on coaches was in reaction to Hopkins.

On the sidelines for Hopkins would be Bob Scott, Wilson Fewster, Jerry Schnydman (sp), Joe Cowan, Chic et al. It was characterized as unfair. There might be an anachronism in there.

For a short time in the early 90's ? one staff member was a restricted earnings coach It was decided the restricted earnings designation violated the Sherman Anti Trust Act. I think they were allowed to make around 15K

The rule on limits was initiated for the '93 season. I do believe it was in reaction to the
Hopkins sidelines. Nowadays most programs have the Director of Operations, which in some
cases looks like another coach on paper. It also looks like there are now 3 full time assistants
and I don't see volunteers listed (at least for the rosters I checked).
