D3 lax media coverage

Post by Jumbo »

What’s going on with media coverage lately for D3 lax? The last few seasons, we were seeing multiple writeups about the upcoming season talk of upcoming scrimmages. Previews of top teams. I haven’t seen anything. Inside lacrosse used to have someone assigned to D3. I just checked his twitter, he doesn’t seem to be covering D3 anymore.

One of you regulars here needs to reach out to inside lax about employment

I know that Inside Lacrosse was advertising for media specialists. I heard that with Ty Xanders leaving Inside Lacrosse Dan Kaplan has been promoted as his replacement which kind of leaves an opening for D3 coverage.

I agree. More would be better, and I would hope that Inside Lacrosse would put another one of their assets in place to cover DIII.

That said, in today’s environment with grad years and the transfer portal, it’s pretty tough to preview or rank much of anything before the vast majority of rosters drop. Anybody can throw out last years top 12-15 as this years pre-season 12-15. But to write an informed opinion, some actual information is needed.

It's funny, we always hear the retort of DIII being a niche audience within a niche audience. So no one wants to really invest in coverage. Numbers wise, given the volume of programs at our level, you'd think it would generate more eyes. Not in the minds of the HS/youth players or casual audience I guess. Colleges with larger alumni bases obviously influence that too. Maybe the pure volume of programs to cover creates a choice overload? IDK. I'm part of the double niche audience so I'm biased.

Just compare the post totals in this forum as compared to D1.

I don’t think anyone expect the same coverage as D1. Or the same amount. But some coverage would be nice. The last D3 story I recall hearing about was Berkmans house

Maybe that was the plan. To get us to long for the days of tweets about what shoes to wear vs what opponents, something, anything…

Yeah man, that hurts. Only retort I have to that is all those D1 posters are like 60-70 years old (I'm defensively over generalizing) and have been churning out stuff on Laxpower for like 20 years.

I just checked D1 women’s lax they have 60% more posts than D3 men. So much for more attention given to D3 mens lax. I think the major problem is once you get past the top 20-30 teams the level of play becomes a problem for a wider audience. I’m more apt to see a top high school team than the 150th ranked college program that taking on the 60th ranked team

To use your logic, d3 lax has about 125% more posts that the entire HS board. But we still see top HS player articles every year

No one is suggesting there needs to be a review of every D3 program. But some hype or reviews on the top 25 is expected.

When the move from lax power to fanlax happened the d3 people were slow to make the move. Lots of posters did not make the move or stopped being engaged. The d3 forum at lax power was always the second most used ahead of the ladies. So I’m not sure the numbers can be used to make a point except that d3 does not generate the interest needed to expand media coverage.

I used to really enjoy Chase Stewart's Dad, Max Hjelm's Dad and there was another Salisbury goalie Dad (name escaping me). I also like ThatSmell and obviously DIII's stuff.

Here is a link from a D3 website asking for people to help contribute with content. If anyone is interested, this is a great way to help solve the problem. Although it isn’t as known as Inside Lacrosse the more coverage the better.
