Looks like W&L is getting ahead of the game and landing players before the NESCAC team can get them. Smart to look at the DMV area kids, still think they should recruit harder in VA but they seem to be doing well.

Last 2 sport athlete to play football and lacrosse to my recollection was ( future HOF) Luke Heinsohn. Held many rushing records when his playing days were over. Very difficult to do both sports justice. Wish the young man all the best, should he ultimately stick with one hope it’s lacrosse. He’s got a special gear

Nick De Cain is a stud of goalie. Guesses a little, but fundamentally sound. Watched him stand on his head a couple times this season against some very good shooters from Springfield Delco and Garnet Valley. A D1 steal IMO.

I’ve heard he is a very good goalie. I also understand he stood behind an incredible defense at Radnor that had an exceptionally low goals against per game average. So the question becomes was that due to the great D that forced low percentage shots or was he standing on his head. If you are making 5 saves a game the guys out front and fogo unit should get a lot of credit. Hope he is an exceptional goalie and he continues the tradition of strong players W&L has produced at that position

It will be good to have competition at the goalie position. Boyd got some starting experience last year as a freshman, but his save % was less than 50%.

Both. Radnor's slide package wasn't overly complex IMO. Mostly on an island due to the exceptional play you mentioned. Games I saw against GV and Springfield he made some high level saves. He's a good one. Hope he contributes for you all!

Boyd was a 4 year varsity player at Chatham which is a very strong program. I thought he’d start which he did but regrettably struggled while the coaches stuck with him for a time until a change had to be made. My hope is that he regains his confidence and competes for the starting job. The Radnor goalie has a nice resume as well so there will be stiff competition. Toughest position on the field I know I wouldn’t want to do it. Curious if either both or one of the Ssdm’s bump to the 1st or 2nd line mid units. Personally I hope Beatty and Elliot Cohen continue in their roles, they are both just too good.

I agree with you regarding the two SSDM’s. It is an under appreciated position, but last year the coaches seemed willing to push transition and allow the dmids and lsms to attack the net. Many programs are buying into the “two way middie” concept, and these kids along with Albregts and perhaps others fit that model.

Boyd started the season because of injuries to the other goalies who were in the mix for the starting job. He did well against York and Catholic, with the help of his close D, but gradually went downhill as GeneralBart mentioned with his save %.

He had 3 saves vs York with a .231 save percentage. I wouldn’t call that “doing well”

That is very similar to the style of defense that W&L already plays.

Save %, not, but I did say he had help with close D, and his clearing wasn't bad so with all factors considered, not just saves, he did well for his first game as a freshmen, and they won the game.

For a freshman to step in with a team that has high expectations is a tough order. I thought from people who had seen him play that he’d be at a higher level. My hope is that he comes back and plays at a level he expects from himself. Toughest job out there

It really is the toughest, most exposed position on the field. Especially with the risk of the errant dive. So much is dependent on their communication. Very multi-faceted. Misunderstood by many a coach as well, especially those with an instinct to pull the hook out.

Daly was on one of those well produced Tufts championship run documentaries (that were pulled off YouTube due to music copyright issues) specifically saying he doesn't speak to the goalies because he didn't speak goalie. I think that captures it.

One thing that I am noticing is that suddenly W&L is in a horse race with schools like Dartmouth, Richmond, Tufts, Amherst, and Bowdoin. And those are just the prospects who haven’t already committed to Washington and Lee. Same thing is happening with men’s soccer. Both programs on the rise, as W&L soccer made the national semi finals year before last. They picked up 16 high level commits in the last two years. I think that lax may be headed in the same direction.

It didn’t hurt that they won 18 games last season, lost to #1 Salisbury by just 3, and ended up number 8 in the nation. I think that both the women’s and the men’s lax and soccer teams have a little friendly “success completion” going, which is great to see and can only help.
