NCAA Champion, All American defender, and Schmeisser Award winner.
He was a teacher, dean of students, and possibly the winningest coach in MSA/MIAA history ever, collecting 20 hs state championships as a head coach-
10 in lacrosse at John Carroll and 10 in squash at Gilman.
He was a mentor to many, and gentleman to all.
His family and friends will miss him.

Terrific guy!
Thanks for sharing and very well said.
I had just asked after Boo the other day at Gilman.

I'll share with my son who had Boo in class and as his squash coach. He used to 'housesit' Boo's orchids and other plants when they were on vacation, as they're right around the corner from us.

Boo Smith was one of the finest men I ever knew and a true teacher-coach. He will be missed. Rest easy, Boo!

BL and McDonogh are the clear teams to beat. Top talent and marquee names. Great depth. I would be more surprised if they weren't playing in the Championship in May. Outside of those two, it will be more wide open for the remaining 4 playoff spots than it has been in years.

For those from afar who might, but should not, be confused, Calvert Hall...MIAA

There are other Calvert's, one is an elementary to middle school in Roland Park, another is a high school in Prince Frederick county, and there are Calvert County schools.

When I scroll thru current college rosters I’ll occasionally see players from MIAA schools listed with hometowns from Florida or Oregon, etc…

I just always assumed that these schools did not have boarding options. I guess I was wrong. Do they all offer boarding and is this a new thing that is expanding to keep up with the NE Prep schools?

McD has for awhile now, others have started added boarding to keep up. Someone closer to the league could give better specifics.

Always if I'm not mistaken, certainly as far back as the 40's when my dad was a student. But mostly day students and not historically a focus of athletic recruiting. Might be a bit now?

Currently, 5 day program:

"To qualify for boarding, a student’s primary residence must be within 90 miles of the McDonogh School campus in Owings Mills, Maryland. Exemptions may be made if the applicant has a relative (by blood or marriage) within the 90-mile radius and that family member agrees to serve as a local host family on weekends and in cases of emergency. Due to the nature of our five-day boarding program, students must return home on weekends, and sometimes more frequently due to holidays, weather events, or illness. To learn more about the exemption application process, please contact the Director of Enrollment Management."

Kram is correct re BL.

And I think there's some more or less fast and loose activities, though not formal boarding programs elsewhere.

There's no boarding at Gilman. There was some 'boarding' with coaches or other families during the Poggi football era but more for kids to have safer situations than out of state, etc., and with foreign exchange students, one a year.

The league has shifted...

BL recently added 7-day boarding. Bringing in several kids per year from all over. Interested to see how this goes and affects league moving forward.

McD has had 5-day for quite a while, most likely from the days it was a military school.

CHC, SP and Gilman have had a few students from other states occasionally who have lived with host families or when family relocated during season.

Yes, since at least the 50’s at McD, probably from inception as it originally was founded as a school for orphans and poor.

I don’t recall any lacrosse players from out of state at Gilman. Possibly football in prior era.

BL is full speed specifically for lax, I understand.

My favorite stat about the miaa is pretty crazy. Two years in a row the #1 team in the country was #2 in the miaa. Referring to BL and Gilman, with loyola winning both titles. The way Steele silenced that BL crowd ("your brothers better your brothers better") 7 goals and 2 assists later that side of the bleachers at Unitas got quiet real quick. I may be biased but it's hard to beat miaa lacrosse. Right now there are 3 teams in the top 11 and if MIAA teams didn't have to play each other they'd probably have much higher national rankings. Love what Charles st, lake Ave, and reisterstown rd (and the rest of the div) bring every week. We are blessed to get the lacrosse that we do. No where else do teams play the level that they do game after game. Would most
Miaa teams win games against the top ranked teams? Maybe, and they have. Would those top ranked teams survive an miaa schedule? The world will never know

Yes, the top ranked teams would do very well, not just 'survive', an MIAA schedule. No doubt.
Certainly the best programs with PG's and the best programs from the Island, DC, Philly and a smattering of others from around the country.

However, you're likely still correct that no other single league set up has the overall game after game after game quality of match-ups as the MIAA. However, individual programs do schedule their own murderer's row of games that test their mettle against the very best. They'd all thrive if in MIAA.

I'm likely older than you, so I recall when it was the MSA and the A division had just 6 teams, Loyola and Calvert Hall, Boy's Latin and St. Pauls, Gilman and McDonogh. Each team played the other twice, two games a week. We also played the best publics from Baltimore County and Anne Arundel, plus the independent program Wroxeter which was a predecessor to programs like IMG and Hill Academy. They pulled from Anne Arundel and DC predominantly and were a tremendous program which traveled up and down the East Coast rarely beaten.

My senior year at Gilman we began the season by trouncing the best public in MD that year, Dulaney, in a game-like scrimmage. However, we then lost our first two MSA games each by a goal, but then ran the table thereafter to win outright as everyone but McD managed to beat each other up that year. We locked the championship with a win over St.P at Gilman on a Saturday in front of 4,000 fans. We then played Wroxeter which had been unbeaten playing the best from New York, NJ, PA, DC etc, indeed they had no close games. The papers all predicted they would trounce us, their attack and fast break were unstoppable; indeed they were really, really good...we won 16-9 with many of our scores off of our own fast breaks...

We didn't travel beyond MD in those days, however, so it was only the rare game/scrimmage versus a top Long Island team when they came down on spring break. The year before we'd played Huntington High, the eventual Island champs in early March and won 16-1, but it was their first weeks outside, so not at all the team that eventually won the Island. These days numerous teams do more travel so there are more opportunities to test, and the caliber of top notch play has spread to many corners of the country.

I agree w everything said about the Conference. If you truly love the game, and a level of competition, not much else compares. In Baltimore we are fortunate to go and watch these teams at intimate venues, close up.
