2023 New York State Girls Championships

Post by thedisciple516 »

The best tournament in all of lacrosse (both boys and girls) imo. No fake, manufactured private school super teams. It's all about playing for the pride of your communities and hometowns the way high school sports was meant to be. First there's all the great local rivalries on the way to a Sectional Championship. Then there's all the great regional rivalries... Nassau vs. Suffolk, Rochester vs. Syracuse, Long Island vs. Westchester, Long Island vs. Upstate, Upstate vs. Downstate etc. It doesn't get any better.

Anyway who do we think are the favorites? FWIW

Class A

It's been a very strong year upstate for girls class A. Defending state champ Baldwinsville has had a few more hiccups then expected considering how much they had returning but they are one of the favorites. Local rival Cicero-North Syracuse has looked even better and bested B'ville head to head. Section 5 (Rochester) has three teams capable of winning it all in Pittsford, Fairport and Rush-Henrietta. It's basically a toss up between those five but Rush-Henrietta has a slight edge to make it to the final.

This doesn't look to be the strongest year on Long Island for class A but even in a down year LI is formidable. Northport seems to once again be seperating itself from the pack and is the favorite to make it off the island and back to the championship. There isn't much in Westchester or Albany standing in their way.

Prediction - Northport 10-9 Rush-Henrietta. It's a toss up but Northport will have the motivation advantage after loosing in last year's final.

Class B

Not a very deep year anywhere in NYS for girls Class B. Like Baldwinsville, defending champ Victor has had a few more hiccups then expected given how much they had returning but they are still one of the best teams in the state. It's a two horse race between Victor and bitter local rival Canandaigua to make it to the title game from upstate. Canandaigua has had a great year that included a two goal loss to St. Anthony's and the only team to beat Rush-Henrietta. Their worst game was in a surprising 7 goal loss to Victor which will serve as motivation in the Section V title game. Nobody else upstate is touching these two.

Correct me if I'm wrong Long Islanders but Garden City looks to be the clear favorite to make it off the Island and to the state title game. Once again there is little in Westchester or Albany standing in the Long Island Champ's way.

Predictition - Canandaigua 11-10 Garden City. Another toss up but let's give it to Canandaigua who would have their first championship. Garden City has enough championships lol.

Class C

Long Island looks to be absolutely loaded in Class C and whoever makes it off the island is almost guaranteed to win it all. BBP is probably technically the favorite but North Shore has some impressive results against the likes of Garden City, St. Anthony's and Wilton. Wantagh could also very easily win it but let's go with North Shore. There is once again not much in Westechter or Albany standing in the Long Island Champs way.

It's a very weak year or Class C upstate. Honoeye Falls-Lima is probably the favorite.

Predicition - North Shore 15-6 HFL

Class D

This might be the most interesting tournament with (unlike the boys) a number of great teams who would give anyone in Class A or B a run for their money (and have). There are two great teams upstate out of Section 3 capable of winning it all Skaneateles and South Jefferson. Skaneateles brought everyone back from a team that made it to last year's final including multiple high level D1 commitments (James Madison, UNC, Notre Dame etc.). It was assumed they'd cruise this year but South Jefferson has been even more (unexpectadly) impressive after losing so much off of last year's team. SJ beat Baldwinsville and lost close games to Cicero and Victor and imo makes it to the title game.

Downstate Cold Spring Harbor doesn't have the best record but has acquitted themselves well against a brutal schedule and is the favorite to make it to the title game. Defending champ Bronxville has also performed well against a tough schedule but CSH has the edge.

These four teams are heads and shoulders above the rest and it's unlikely anyone but two of them will reach the title game.

Prediction - South Jefferson 9-8 Cold Spring Harbor. Another toss up but it's always fun to see a first time champ.

Up until this year, I'd have pushed back, arguing that the NJ post season playoffs were superior. NJ doesn't exclude privates or parochials unless they have PGs. We divide the publics into four groups by size, essentially the same as NY's classes. The parochials and privates have two groups of their own.

Until this year, the four public and two parochial group winners played in a Tournament of Champions so NJ ended up with one true overall, last team standing, state champion. Over the years, there have been any number of great TOC games, the best games in state history. But the geniuses at the NJSIAA in their infinite (lack of) wisdom have done away with the TOC this year. It's a crying shame because NJ has had a state-wide post season lacrosse tournament since 1976, and it has always played out to one last team standing champion.

So until this year, the NJ playoffs were the best in the country. NY has it's class champs, but wouldn't it be great if those four champs then played a semis and a finals to determine one true overall state champ? How about if the IAAM champ played in a four team TOC with the three MD public champs?

But, alas, I may have to accede to the poster from NY now that the Garden State has taken a decided step back. But all may not be lost. The boys are going to have an informal TOC. Take that you NJSIAA bureaucrats!! Talk of having one for the girls apparently died on the vine. But there was at least talk and some rough plans kicked around. Maybe next year.

My favorite thing about the NYS championship is the strong regional rivalries. Long Island, Syracuse, Rochester and Westchester are each some of lacrosse's great traditional hot beds and things get pretty heated among players and fans for bragging rights.

The Section 3 (Syracuse) area respresentative for example isn't just playing for the their school or hometowns but represent all of Central New York and eventually all of Upstate New York if they make it to the title game. Same thing obviously for the Long Island and Westchester reps.

The rivalries mentioned above (Syracuse vs. Rochester, Long Island vs. Westchester, Long Island vs. Upstate etc.) are all pretty heated and are what make the ttournament special. Does Jersey have something similar? The only real NJ Division I'm aware of is North and South Jersey (Giants/Jets fans vs. Eagles fans). Are they roughly equal in terms of lacrosse and does each area's rep want to badly win bragging rights for their region?

I agree completely with you about NY's regional rivalries. Definitely stronger than Jersey's. There is a North Jersey vs. South Jersey divide, but it pales in comparison to, say, the Island vs. Upstate.

The rivalries in NJ are more team specific. For many years, the biggest rivalry in NJ was Moorestown vs. Shawnee. There were lots of years when those were the two best teams in the state. Both are in South Jersey and Burlington County. In fact, until 2010 at least one team from Burlington County was in the overall state finals even before the years in which the tournament was divided up geographically. But, unfortunately for those of us in South Jersey, the North has far surpassed us in, say, the past 10-15 years so those old rivalries, while still extant, don't have nearly the same importance. I remarked to Rimback earlier this year that for many years the game of the year in Jersey was Moorestown vs. Shawnee. Not anymore. Now I'd say it is Summit vs. Oak Knoll, both North Jersey teams in Union County.

The NJ public school playoffs are divided into North and South Groups. South Jersey Group 1 and North Jersey Group 1, etc. The South champ plays the North champ for the overall state Group champion. But there is little to no sentiment at those state Group championship games that, say, the South team is representing South Jersey against North Jersey.

So from a regional rivalry standpoint, I'd agree NY is much stronger than Jersey. Just that the old NJ TOC was a fantastic tournament to determine one overall state champ.

Manhasset 13 Wantagh 7 Final.

Indians peaking at the right time. Should be a good one against North Shore on 6/1/23 at Adelphi. I think the game is at 7 or 730 PM.

Canandaigua is out after falling to Irondequoit in OT. Victor should take Rochester B and then overwhelm Bfl rep (OP?)

Rush Henrietta and Fairport should be a barnburner in Rochester A. Whoever wins will be in Cortland and a serious contender.

Honeoye Falls Lima will probably outclass PalMac in Rochester C. Bfl C rep (Hamburg or Lakeshore) might give them a game this year in WNY meeting.

Penn Yan most likely wins Rochester D and WNY game too. Mustangs offense is super young but loaded. Top player BCooper (9th grader) is basically Kueka's version of LeBron.

Any injuries on Canandaigua? They were looking pretty impressive until late in the year

IDK but their top stat leader appears to have no stats recorded or this game or the prior game according to https://glaxfive.net/index.php

Section V
A- Fairport/RH will be a very, very physical game. Hope the refs are ready.
B- Victor will take it easily. Your answer for CA and stat leader is connected to my comment about A.
C- May be a year Section VI makes it to Cortland
D- Go PY ! Fun, young team. B Cooper was Canandaigua born and raised, parents moved back to their home town on Keuka Lake. Big pick up for the Mustangs.

Assuming we're talking about Hannah Davis? If so she's a top recruit nationally and committed to Boston College. That'd explain the recent drop off. Too bad they were look real good earlier in the season.

Aren't Canandaigua and Penn Yan arch-rivals? Good thing the girls teams don't play each other.

The boys side has maintained the rivalry after CA left for Monroe County. The girls side has not.

IQ took Victor to the brink but lost on a 4th OT 8m shot (8-7). Hate when 8m plays end a game. Hope it wasn't a 'cheapie' foul.

I didn't watch the game, not paying NY state for the subscription. But I thought same, tough to lose on an 8 meter. But Pittsford won a state title that way.

Manhasset playing as good as anyone in NYS right now. Going to to be extremely tough on Sunday at 6PM against BBP, arguably a top 5 team in the nation at 17-0 on the year. Exciting stuff.

Welp. There go most of my predictions. Only Northport remains. Too bad about North Shore always fun to see a new comer get in on the party. Manhasset's trophy case is already busting at the seams.

No injuries for Canandaigua. PY girls and CA girls are not rivals. They play against each other in fall tournaments and given CA is Class B with more girls to draw from - not much of a game. Bailey is a great player though!
