Due to a mandated team quarantine following a positive test result of two of its players, Team USA will be unable to participate in its 28 December preliminary game against Switzerland at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The result of the game will be recorded as a 1-0 win for Switzerland by forfeit in accordance with the IIHF Rule Book.

The team’s quarantine status will be evaluated later to determine whether it will be able to compete in its next preliminary round game, scheduled for 29 December against Sweden.

38K at the game. Windchills at -20F. A bit too cold for me but it was a decent enough game.

I watched it while watching the Mummer's FB's on my other PC.

Folks back East often wonder how we in the Tundra survive these long winters every year. One way is enjoying all the youth hockey that we have here. Went to a pee-wee (age 12) game yesterday as my local club won 3-0 in what was a good game. But today we had an extraordinary game in West St Paul. Our local class AA bantam (age 14) team took on a powerful team from Stillwater. Clearly the Ponies (as the visitors are called) had the better team: more size, more speed, superior puck handling skills, far more time of possession, and had 36 SOG as opposed to 20 for the Warriors of WSP. But we won 3-0 due to the incredible work by the goal tender. In all my years of watching youth hockey I have never seen a greater performance. At game's end everyone swarmed the goalie and congratulated him on his success.

After the game I stood near the exit to button up my coat and put on my gloves. Suddenly, there was the goalie chatting with his parents. After their chat, I told the parents what a "sensational" game he had. Then I asked, will he get an extra slice of pizza for his good work? His mom said, he was just putting in his order for pizza and, yes, he definitely was getting that well deserved extra slice.

Wow. What a game - and it was for FREE! So glad I was there to witness what surely was a once in a lifetime performance.

Willie O'Ree's number to be retired by Boston Bruins tonight

A New Brunswick hockey legend will be honoured once again Tuesday evening when his number is retired by the team with which he made history.

Willie O'Ree's jersey number 22 will be retired by the Boston Bruins at TD Garden before the team's game against the Carolina Hurricanes. O'Ree's number was supposed to be retired at a ceremony in February of last year, but it was postponed due to COVID-19 attendance restrictions at the time.

Fluto Shinzawa, a senior writer at The Athletic who covers the Bruins, said the honour is a long time coming for O'Ree.

"The atmosphere will be great and he deserves [it,]" said Shinzawa.

"Talk about how courageous you have to be to play hockey in general — well, you amplify that by 100 in Willie's circumstance."

BOOK REVIEW Willie O'Ree looked past and fought through racism to become NHL's 1st Black player

The Fredericton-born winger became the first Black hockey player to play in the NHL when he entered a game on Jan. 18, 1958, against the Montreal Canadiens.

O'Ree would go on to play 45 games for the Bruins over two seasons, scoring four goals and 10 assists.

He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.

O'Ree will become only the 12th player in Bruins history to have his sweater number retired, joining the likes of Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito and Ray Bourque.

While his story is well known in his home province, Shinzawa admits O'Ree isn't as familiar to people as Jackie Robinson, the first Black major league baseball player in the modern era.

Shinzawa said part of that may be because of O'Ree's relatively short time in the big leagues.

But he also thinks hockey hasn't done as much as other sports to provide a welcoming space for players of colour, and said that plays a part in the under-appreciation of O'Ree's legacy.

Hockey program has goal to combat racism in sport
"Hockey has not progressed to the point that these other sports have in terms of greater integration," said Shinzawa.

"Just in talking to Black families around here in Boston … it can be an intimidating thing to go into a hockey rink. It's unfamiliar to a lot of families and a lot of players."

New Brunswick fans make the trip
Although O'Ree won't be at the rink tonight — he'll be attending virtually from his home in San Diego because of the pandemic — some New Brunswick hockey fans decided to make the trip to Boston, anyway.

To attend Tuesday's game, Kevin Johnson drove through a powerful winter storm that hit the northeast Monday.

"We were down to 25 km/h. I think we could've walked faster," he said.

Even hours before the ceremony, Johnson said the thought of what it will be like being in the arena gives him goosebumps.

"It's just awesome to be here to be part of it," said Johnson.

"... To be here to see his name being recognized for what he's done and what he stands for and the opportunities that he's given everybody to play hockey and for equality, it's just awesome."

Shinzawa will also be in attendance tonight. He said the honour for O'Ree is well deserved, given all he's done to serve the game and in being a role model for Black players.

"It's too bad Willie won't be in attendance. …The ceremony will do him right, even if he can't be here."

Well, sure enough it has now become a part of youth hockey here in Lake Wobegone. Today I watched a bantam match between a West St Paul and a Rosemount club. Rosemount was ahead by a goal and was on attack when its forward suddenly was "slammed" into the ice by WSP. One referee wasn't so sure about it but the other fell for it and imposed a two minute penalty on WSP. Fans started screaming and hollering that the guy took an obvious fall. Folks, I tell ya he wasn't even touched. The Rosemount fans remained silent because they knew it was a faked fall by their player. As luck would have it, with a man down the guilty party scored a power play goal.

Earlier in the game the refs missed it when a Rosemount player slammed a WSP player's head against the board. With one defender down, the culprits scored. Two gift goals by those inept referees. Final score 5-2 (with an empty netter at the end of the game as WSP desperately tried to score with a minute to go.

Such incompetent officiating makes the game less fun but what the hell can you do about it?
