Looking Forward to 2023

Post by OuttaNowhereWregget »

Lots to anticipate for the 2023 season--a mere 36 weeks away.

What will teams look like that have graduated great players? BC, Carolina, Northwestern and plenty of other teams will be missing key players and bringing along their underclass talent.

New teams will begin play in D1 among whom will be Xavier and Clemson.

Very much looking forward to the release of Duke's '23 slate. Will they choose to gorge on weak OOC teams again or will they have learned their lesson from '22?

Who will Maryland schedule? Will they duck UNC again?

Very much looking forward to the first Florida/JMU game with the Dukes moving to the AAC.

Who will be wearing new head coach caps to begin 2023?

Also looking forward to the resolution of the coach Hillier/Drexel debacle.

More games streamed to look forward to.

The newly minted NCAA Quarterfinal day to anticipate.

Lots and lots more coming in 2023...

Another item I’m itching to learn for ‘23 is who will replace Charlotte North on the draw for Boston College. One has to think, whoever it ends up being, they have an excellent teacher on staff in Sam Apuzzo. She was outstanding on the draw during her time.

One of the many things I enjoy about each new season is watching new talent emerge. Perfect example from this past season was Kayla Martello for Boston College. She was made a starter on offense for her sophomore season. She's strong and confident to the cage when she gets a lane and an aggressive redefender. Martello started all 23 games and finished the year with 45 goals. I'm looking forward to seeing who steps up in North's absence on the draw and the offense next year--and if the Hasselbeck's see any more time on the field.

Looking Forward to 2023 in the AAC

Post by OuttaNowhereWregget »

JMU and Florida have played each other only twice. The last time (pictured) was when they squared off in the quarterfinals in 2018. It will make life a lot more interesting in the world of D1 women's lacrosse next season to have these two teams battling each other potentially more than once. Regular season games will be great but the AAC final should be these two for a while.

I thought AWW’s coaching weakness this year was not rotating players in on the draw, especially when CN was not doing well at the draw. Head scratcher….IMHO

Agree. She barely uses her bench and those starters by end of games especially at end of season were exhausted.

Why do you suppose she chooses to do that? What's her coaching philosophy that she uses her players/bench in that way?

Agree. BC was worn down. She has a lot of talent on the bench as well. That has appeared to be MD's philosophy over the years - hard to argue with CR's success though.

What traditional top 10 teams play a deeper bench? SB, NW, 'Cuse?

+1. BC had great circle players who could compete with anyone in 50/50 battles. Made no sense to keep North in the circle unless she was dominating. It's a waste of very important legs to keep your top scoring threat on the draw when she's struggling there anyway, plus you lose any advantage of having that attacker near the goal on a fast break off the draw. They seemed to just have no Plan B when they needed it. Costly mistake for a team that came up 1 goal short.

Dug through stats and found this interesting:
In 2021, BC won 60.1% of their draws; North accounted for 46.8% of her team's DCs and won 28.1% of the total draws her team took (Tewaaraton, NC)
In 2022, ------ 54.4% ------------------------------ 36.6% ---------------------- 19.9% (Tewaaraton, no NC)
So a step back for both North and BC this year. At what point does the negative to having North on the draw outweigh the positive?

Compared to Apuzzo:
In 2017, BC won 51.5% of their draws; Apuzzo accounted for 19.2% of her team's DCs and won 9.9% of the total draws her team took.
In 2018, ------ 60.6% ------------------------------- 41.5% ---------------------- 25.1% (Tewaaraton)
In 2019, ------ 62.5% ------------------------------- 44.4% ---------------------- 27.8% (no Tewaaraton)
Apuzzo's dominance on the draw was a significant contributing factor to BC's rise. North was even more dominant en route to BC's National Championship.

Compared to Treanor:
In 2016, Cuse won 59.7% of their draws; Treanor accounted for 60.8% of her team's DCs and won 36.3% of the total draws her team took
Just wow...

Duke in 2023

Post by OuttaNowhereWregget »

Nifty goal here by Duke's sophomore attacker Katie DeSimone. Duke graduates at least 6 among whom are Cat Barry, Katie Cronin and Abby Landry. DeSimone will no doubt be called on to pick up more of the offensive slack next season with at least these three moving on. Looking forward to their '23 schedule release and wondering if Northwestern will have a place on it again.

These are the sure and potential graduates for the Tar Heels. They'll have a great hole on offense unless there are some players who will emerge in a big way in '23--or transfer in.

Looking forward to seeing Stony Brook in the CAA next season. Their level of competition will rise slightly with Drexel, Hofstra and Towson on the regular and (potentially/likely) postseason slates. Will 2023 be the year Stony Brook finally makes it to Championship Weekend? That would be a treat, especially if they get there by overthrowing the team that has stood in their way the last two years.

This will also be something special to see in 2023. Scheduled to be completed by November of ‘22.

“I haven't done a lot of research on the Bucs but I thought they deserved their own topic. News broke today of approval for a peach of a new lacrosse only field for the Ohio State University women. Very nice--and very encouraging to see a major program make that kind of commitment to their women's lacrosse team.”
