Tewaaraton Favorite?

As we near the end of the 2022 season, who do you believe is the favorite to win the Tewaaraton? As it stands today, Wisnauskas would be my pick as he is the best player on one of the best offenses of all time and has the stats to go along with that (84 points on 48g/36a). By no means do I think he has the award locked up at this point though so would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Fine choice. Sometimes a guy who was close in the mix prior years gets a lifetime achievement award so my thinking was Gray had a heads up going into the year and he had a fine season but man it’d be hard given UNC is outside the tourney.

Handley? Bundy? Anyone from UVA stand out? Can’t think of a singular player at PTon who stood out so much from the rest.

Wisnauskas is the favorite. Nichtern and Brandau would make good finalists. McElroy should be there. Adler from Cornell would be a good choice as well. Should really be more diversity this year than just the 5 best attackmen; that was fair last year in a year of historically good attackmen but this year it shouldn’t be the same.

It's Wisnauskas. Nichtern and Gray are done by virtue of their teams not making the tournament. Brandau can make it interesting if Yale goes on a run and he has a big tournament. But it's Wisnauskas' to lose.

1. Wisnauskus- best player on best team. Outstanding vision/outside shot
2. Brandau- only player in the top 5 for both goals/assists per game
3 Nichtern-most valuable to his offense but team may hurt chances

He’ll be in the running.
You have to see that guy live to really appreciate
what he does.

Is he the best midfielder since Seibald?

Ahh, that name brings back memories, and not good ones for SU fans. It was a game at the Dome. SU and Cornell tied. Like 6 or 7 seconds left, and Cornell has the ball out of bounds about equal with the restraining line in SU territory. Mad Max is taking it in and to our surprise, Max is 1 on 1 with a defender who has absolutely no shot, so we are screaming Max, don't pass, just take it straight to the net.
He blew by that SU defender like he wasn't there, and blasted a shot that would have gone through a brick wall. Tewaaraton moment.

Based on numbers AND if this player WAS NOT on the team....I'd pick B

What say you?

I remember it well. The SU goalie was so frustrated he tried to break the shaft of his stick over his knee. 2007 was also the year Seibald ran down the Albany player from behind in OT, stick checked the ball away and Big Red went the other way for the Clayton to Glynn to Pittard back to Glynn winning goal in NCAA quarters. Sadly 15-0 Cornell lost to Duke in the NCAA semi-finals that year. Seibald won the Tewaaraton 2 years later in 2009.

He reportedly was the fastest 40 on campus then. That’s why I don’t freak out about Bernhardt.

Brought the name up because middies so rarely get the Tewey but he did and Handley seems like he should be top 3 in voting IMO.

You’re going to make me guess but would you compare stats equally of an pure attack and a midfielder.

Not knowing D, GB/TO, any clutch plays of note in significant games and how many GWGs I guess B or C?

I checked. There’s just no way that Army with a weaker schedule and no playoffs is Nichtern there. And his shooting is so much worse than Brandau or Wis. you can justify Handley a because he’s a midfielder. Brandau is C.

Maybe we first need to agree that it is not all about stats....after reading the below (from the website), and seeing the halftime spot during the Army-Navy game, coupled with my rationale for selecting B, can anyone add any color on the others and their off-field "contribution to society" that would sway us?

Spirit of Tewaaraton
The “Spirit of Tewaaraton” award is presented to an individual involved in the sport of lacrosse, who nobly reflects the finest virtues exemplified in the game, and who, over the course of his or her life, has made a significant contribution to society and to the lives of others.

Based purely on stats, I would look at per game averages. So over 16 games, A and B have pretty close totals (A would have 96 points, and way more goals), but A’s significantly higher shooting percentage is the clincher. If anything, the better comp is between A and C - they’re practically identical, aside from shooting percentage.

Handley is certainly making his case. It depends on how far Penn goes, which looks pretty far to me.

I think Handley's performance the next (hopefully) two weeks will determine his Tewey legitimacy. When in "Beast Mode" he is the most unstoppable force in D1 Lax. Let's see if he has what it takes to bring it with everything on the line.

I think by my comment that you should be able to tell I don’t think it’s all about stats.

And…absent any obvious attack player and a unique once in a decade type Middie I would like to see the middie get it to make sure it’s not a complete joke attack award 100% of the time.

It would be unfair to apply service standard for academy students and the rest. Particularly when there’s a congressional recommendation requirement-even if that is practically speaking easier to come by than it sounds on paper.
