As LaxCoach13 said, not surprising. The MPSF teams have been living on borrowed time since the Pac-12 formed. The MPSF had no automatic qualifier and just three teams (now two) and those teams were de-facto independents.

They had only three choices, none of them good.

First was to go fully independent, which is what they're essentially doing now under the guise of the MPSF. With no conference AQ, the chances of those teams getting into the post-season are remote. No post-season means not being able to recruit effectively to get there and so on.

Second is to find another conference. The most logical choice would be the Pac-12, but that's apparently not an option otherwise they would have done so already. Not sure who else would be able to take them. Big East (they have Denver)? Logistics alone would be expensive, but would probably be the best of bad options if only for a shot at the post-season.

Third is to either drop down to club status (which St. Mary's did a few years ago) or drop it entirely (which Fresno St. just did).

Not sure how much longer UC Davis or San Diego St. will last with a now two team conference.
