Tar Heel State Native is First Commitment in 2022 Class For Ohio State

Head coach Nick Myers and the Ohio State Buckeyes picked up their first commitment in the 2022 class on Thursday, as Middle Creek, N.C. attackman Tate Jones announced his commitment to the Buckeyes. Jones announced his commitment via Instagram.

“The whole Ohio State brotherhood and atmosphere was huge for me,” Jones told Lacrosse Bucket. “Not to mention how dedicated coach Myers is in his recruitment process from consistent calls to even going over lacrosse with you.”

Ohio State head coach Nick Myers reached out to Jones on September 1st, which was the first day that college coaches were able to contact 2022 recruits. Jones stated that he has had pretty consistent contact with Coach Myers since that September 1st date and has taken a virtual visit with him, which he called “mind blowing.”

While has never been up to Ohio State before, Jones said that he has been to Columbus on multiple occasions and loves the area. He said he plans on taking and official visit as soon as things open back up.

A versatile offensive talent, Jones tallied 28 points (17G/11A) while helping Middle Creek to a 5-0 record before the Coronavirus outbreak cancelled the remainder of the Mustangs’ season. As a freshman in 2019, he tallied 74 points (43G/31A) while helping his Middle Creek team go 18-3 and reach the NCHSAA 4A state semifinals.

Due to Coronavirus cancelling the 2020 spring lacrosse season, Jones said that he has had to do more work on his own. However, he stated that in some ways it has been a blessing in disguise. “I’ve had to do a lot more training on my own and with friends…but it’s definitely helped my game in terms of learning weaknesses and strengths.”

Jones is the third player from the Tar Heel state to commit to a DI program in the class. He takes pride in being a player from North Carolina and wants to be an example for other players from the state. “My main goal is to show kids out of North Carolina that your lacrosse dreams really are possible and that you can go wherever you want as long as you are putting the work in,” Jones said.

Really excited to see OSU play this season. Big fast kids, smooth and slick hands on O. It would be great to see them make a push this year.

Also this is a great preview video!

After imploding or shooting themselves in the foot during the past two full seasons, Ohio State looks to have the right amount of talent and experience up and down the field to potentially make a serious run in the Big Ten.

Ohio State Lacrosse Player Transferring to Syracuse Football
The Orange has added a new punter to the roster from an unusual source.

Transfers are becoming more and more common in collegiate athletics. Typically, however, they are done within the same sport. Rarely does a player transfer schools to play a different sport, and yet that is exactly what has happened with Colby Barker. Barker is transferring from Ohio State lacrosse to Syracuse football where he will be a walk-on punter.

Barker, a former standout lacrosse star at Pittsford High School in Western New York, elected to opt out of the 2021 lacrosse season due to the pandemic and other personal reasons. The 6-1, 199 pounder entered the NCAA transfer portal in the fall looking for a new challenge.

"I'm a punter, actually, and I was always interested in that coming out of high school even though I committed early for lacrosse," Barker said. "I kind of just wanted to see where it would go. I made a film and sent it out to people this fall since because of covid I was home a lot. It just kind of fell into place where Syracuse was gracious enough to offer me a walk-on spot and we're going to see how it goes this summer."

After entering the portal, Barker still participated in fall workouts with the Ohio State lacrosse program. During that time he was contacted by some schools to transfer to continue playing lacrosse, but he was focused on football.

"I was mainly looking just to play football," Barker said. "Football's always, growing up, I don't want to say my first love because I loved both (football and lacrosse), but I think it was time for me to go see if I could do something else. I had my years of lacrosse and I think the only way I wanted to go to grad school and pay for more school was to play football."

Barker did say other schools were expressing interest in him as a football prospect beyond Syracuse, but ultimately he decided to stick with the Orange. He is looking for to running out of the Dome tunnel wearing the blue and orange.

"My mom actually went there for a semester and was on the cheer team and then ended up transferring," Barker said. "She got her old varsity jacket out. It was very exciting for me. I'm just really honored and blessed and humbled by the opportunity that Syracuse gave me. To be able to put the pads on again and run out of tunnel, especially at a place like the Dome that is just an incredible place, I'm just humbled to be honest. It still feels a little surreal."

Barker graduates from Ohio State in May and will join the Syracuse program this summer.

Any background on Drew Elder (FO) entering the transfer portal? Ohio State's Drew Elder, IL's No. 82 rising senior in 2019, also entered the portal this week and is no longer listed on the Buckeyes' online roster. Elder, a four-star face-off recruit, played his high school ball at Lake Norman (N.C.) and IMG Academy in Florida.
