This is a very sad story. Can't imagine how this will impact the players. Unfortunately, since Miller's has coached at SJ's, his teams have faced many different "culture" challenges. Years ago I was approached by and spoke with Coach Miller at a tournament my son was participating in. I've heard this phrase used by several coaches before, but with a very serious face he really emphasized his teams played with a "blue collar and chips on their shoulders mentality". How has that philosophy worked out for you coach?

That's fine and dandy, and realize no coach can babysit their guys 24-7 and that no College program is perfect and has kids that do knucklehead things. But I've known several parents and their sons from the Island and their stories from playing for the Johnnies under Miller. "In my opinion", what comes into question is more than the losing record under his leadership in addition to how the heck he has held onto his reign for so long?

I hope the players can move forward and rip it up in the Spring. They have some very talented young men on this team and wish them only the best.

That is an awful story and situation. I hope all recover and get on a good path forward.

I agree DU, just awful. Additional info on the story came out this evening. He got into a fight and stabbed a former (class of 2018) Lax player at the school. And of course this NY Post story feeds into the stereotypical player picture that Lax guys are sometimes painted (look at comments from a few SJ's students interviewed for article):

Thank God the young man will survive.

Terrible story. I heard that players on the team who were there stabilized the victim and rushed him to help. Of course that part won’t be told.

This article today does mention it.

In addition, St. John's also removed the victims name off it's team roster listing the 4 years he played. I'm a little baffled by this move? Fortunately as posted prior, his teammates were there (unfortunate they had to witness it) and played a major role in helping save his life. I'm sure St. John's hopes this story just fades away. Again, happy he made it.

Shocking and awful...

I can't remember seeing a college lax-related violent situation this bad since UVA's George Huguely's conviction for the second-degree murder of UVA women's lax team member Yeardley Love in 2010.

Let's hope the victim indeed survives...

With 50+ 18-23 year old men on a lax roster, the chance for a bad apple or even a bad decision in our sport is higher than most college sports having smaller rosters. Every college coach goes to bed at night hoping that their phone won't ring.

I can only imagine what the St. John's program might be going through right now...

I am going to be in Milwaukee tonight and thought I would swing by Marquette, I've never seen the campus. Anyone have any restaurant recommendations?

St. John's schedule has been released. Very similar to last year's but dropped HPU and a few others.

IL's Preseason Big East Player of the Year
Ethan Walker, Denver
The leading scorer for the Pioneers the past two seasons. The physical lefty will be the focal point for opposing teams’ defenses with a relatively young group surrounding him at attack. Still, that’s never stopped Walker from taking over games as he scored six hat tricks in his junior season.

IL's Preseason Big East Rankings
1 Denver
2 Georgetown
3 Villanova
4 Providence
5 Marquette
6 St. John’s

IL's Preseason All-Conference
A Ethan Walker, Denver
A Jake Carraway, Georgetown
A Keegan Khan, Villanova
M Connor Kirst, Villanova
M Jack Hannah, Denver
M Tim Hinrichs, Providence
FO Brett Boos, Denver
SSDM Danny Logan, Denver
D Colin Squires, Denver
D Gibson Smith, Georgetown
D Patrick Kennedy, Villanova
G Will Vitton, Villanova

Surprised at this. I would have thought either Carraway or Kirst would have been pre-season Player of the Year. While an excellent player, Walker’s 52 points last year were more than 25% down from his first two years. At the same time, both Carraway’s (88 points) and Kirst’s (50 points from the midfield) production have trended positively in a big way.

Assuming the rest of the NCAA keeps the season going with very limited or no fans at the games, I think the Big East can get 3 teams in the NCAA tournament without Ivy league participation.

The NCAA tournament odds just improved for Georgetown, Villanova, and Denver.

If nothing else changes, do we have 8 AQs, 8 at larges and lose the play in game?
