Now—we all know that the polls mean very little. And we know they mean absolutely nothing when it comes time for the NCAA to select the field for The Tournament. Yet, it is fun to kvetch about, and/or dispute/question/ridicule the polls occasionally.
Like this week for instance, how does Northwestern land at number five, and for that matter, how are they still in the top 10? Here at Fanlax—our very own number/data crunchers have NU at 21 in the scientifically arrived at ranking. Northwestern is closer to 10 than they are 21 in my subjective opinion, but just because they beat up on lowly Rutgers does not mean they are worthy of staying in the top 10 this week. And they are certainly not worthy of being number 5.

The IWLCA seems to be sitting around a water pipe.
Re: Beef with the polls
They’re sitting around some kind of pipe.
Re: Beef with the polls
Northwestern at number four. Two spots ahead of North Carolina, who completely embarrassed them when they met earlier this year. I don’t see it. USC not in the top 10.
Which Coaches vote the Coaches Poll?
Does anyone know the answer to this question? Does every single coach in division one submit their picks like we do? After seeing today’s picks from all three polls that were released, our picks are pretty reasonable overall.
Re: Which Coaches vote the Coaches Poll?
Still dont get how FLA go jump 14 spots in one poll, but SBU only jumps 6 spots...and the teams that they played Cuse was the higher ranked team
Re: Beef with the polls
Looks like I'm going to have to go to outside sources for some info on this one...
Re: Beef with the polls
Just got this in response from a head coach in the ACC:
"There is a committee of coaches that vote. It’s made up of both head and assistant coaches. Each person can submit their own votes, so no polling. The interesting thing is that not all ballots submitted are used either."
Bold emphasis mine

Re: Beef with the polls
I don't really put much stock in the polls.
I get that SU was going to drop with the loss to Stony Brook, but they went down 3 spots in the polls to a supposedly (according to their own "polling") better Seawolves squad that was 12th. Meanwhile, Maryland, which lost to no. 14 Florida drops one spot in the coaches and 2 in the media? Whaaaaa?
Florida making that big jump is just ridiculous.
But then, those are the same polls that had Notre Dame 7th in both (a totally WTH move) and BC 5th (no offense wlax). Good thing the NCAAT committee doesn't look at those when they make the selections.

None taken. I thought BC was “overpriced”” from the get go.

Hear, hear!
Re: Beef with the polls
This early in the season, there should be huge fluctuations. e.g. Florida jumping 10 spots or whatever. preseason polls should mean very little...

Re: Beef with the polls
Maryland moving from 11 to 7? Why?
Northwestern moves up a spot. That makes sense with the addition of Mueller.
Why did Michigan move up 3 spots?
BC moves from 20 to 12?? Again--why?

Re: Beef with the polls
How does Princeton even make the list? How many of their players said they were sitting this year out already? BIG credibility gap.

Re: Say what?
I don't get your logic. Maryland moves up 4 spots because of their past accomplishments? They lost 3 games in a row last year, 2 at home. Reigning national champions is a technicality.Turtles Lax wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 1:31 pm The Mighty Turtles are the reigning National Champions and have won four (4) of the last six (6) Natty ‘Ships. Hmmmm...
...using your logic last year’s record is a technicality.
Since the demise of The Only Poll That Matters (TOPTM) all polls are a bit flawed.
Peace, out.
