My point wasn't that Trump or the Republicans were going to fix immigration or were blame free from any of this. But Trump's wall talk has certainly shed a light on immigration that both democrats and republicans simply refused to do for decades.

I can find you clips of every President from Reagan on, discussing immigration fixes. All of them "shedding light" on the issue.

Heres a little light shed on it

76,000 apprehended at the border last month. THATS JUST THE ONES CAUGHT. Who knows how many others slipped in.

The US sent 57,000 GI's onto the beaches at Normandy. Thats been referred to in some places as an invasion.

Or a rescue of Europe. :D

Seriously, we have choked legal immigration and made it extremely difficult to receive asylum. At the same time that several countries in Central America and South America are in meltdown, essentially failed states with skyrocketing murder rates, domination by drug cartels, etc. People are fleeing for a safer life. We're turning them away at legal entry points.

Even so, we are not at the pre-2008 illegal immigration/apprehension rates. That was Mexican migration.

A policy of eased legal immigration, including asylum seekers, and more technology to address drug smuggling and yes human smuggling would make sense. But the hard right wants much less immigration, legal or illegal.

There you go anyone against illegal immigration is a racist so just dismiss their concerns

Less ILLEGAL immigration. More assimilation.

You do realize the US drastically reduced IMMIGRATION for 4 generations to allow assimilation.

So 76,000 (at least)in a month is not an invasion of the southern border.

And I think there are neighborhoods on long island and in Chicago that would be happy to have some sand bags and bunkers to protect them.

I definitely don't think everyone who is concerned about border security, drug and human trafficking, is racist. Certainly not 'all'.

But I am not referring to "all". I mean much more specifically DJT, Stephen Miller, and those who truly are racists.

If you are personally welcoming to those who are seeking asylum from violence and/or looking to be part of the American dream, regardless of whether they have your skin color, worship as you do, etc, then I'll be very, very pleased to not associate you with the racist wing of the GOP.

But if you're not willing to call out that racist wing and those who pander to it, then I'll have to draw a different conclusion.

Pretty simple really.

Great. Wouldn't it have been wonderful if the guy you think walks on water actually did something about it? 2 years of total control of Congress, and he did nothing. $2 Trillion in more spending on socialism, and no funding for the wall.

Yet you don't care, because he's a Republican.

Where's the immigration reform bill?

Where's the wall?

All you have are excuses as to why YOUR MAN didn't lift a finger to fix the problem. Who's fault is it this time, 6ft?

I think the wall is stupid, expensive, and won't come even close to fixing the real problem. But if it will shut the right up? Build five of 'em, for all I care.

The merit based system that Trump proposed would increase immigration from Central Asia & Africa.
India in particular.

There is a willful ignorance to acknowledge the flaws in our immigration laws which serve to attract economic migrants from Central America, under the guise of asylum, to join family members or hometown connections already here -- many illegally.
Murder rates in the Northern Triangle of Central America are decreasing.
They are passing up asylum, resident visas, work authorization & public assistance in safe areas of Mexico where jobs are available.
They're piling up in the less safe border cities, being warehoused under the Remain in Mexico policy until their initial asylum applications are processed, before they're released inside the US, on their own recognizance, to show up for court dates, ...or not & blend into the undocumented diaspora.

DHS is not equipped to cope with the surge in families & children.
Selective stats from past years are cited to deny the actual current conditions.

We live in one of the least densely populated nations on the face of the planet!! If it weren't for the two over populated coasts, it would be even less densely populated. We have tremendous tracks of land that could be settled, causing no one any real harm. The countries these people are coming from all are significantly more densely populated. El Salvador is almost 10 times more densely populated; Guatamala is 5 times more densely populated; Hondurus 2.5 times more densely populated. Even Mexico has twice the population density.

We could accept every El Salvadorian as an immigrant and it would increase our population by less than 2%. And we aren't talking about accepting all of these people. So its time to stop blowing this issue out of proportion. It is only a problem because of the constraints WE (or some in this country want to) place on it. The more constraints, the bigger the problem. The biggest constraint today is the insistence on deporting all illegal immigrants, no matter history, no matter their investment, before addressing the problem moving forward. It is stupid trying to put the milk back in the bottle.

Why not allow these folks to settle some of our unsettled land, the same way Oklahoma and large tracks of the west were settled. Let's live up to the billing we give ourselves.

Ireland was more densely populated until the country emptied out into the United States. Population has yet to recover to pre-migration levels.

Good idea in concept, but are there year round jobs to support them ?
You've rightly told us of the natural decreasing number of jobs due to automation.
The population centers are where the service economy jobs are.
Are we going to dismantle industrial AG & return to a nation of homesteaders on small family truck farms.

There are migrants the world over, in desperate conditions, who will flood to the US if given the chance.
The Northern Triangle migrants are coming because of proximity & family/hometown connections waiting for them in the US.
If those already here illegally are ever legitimized, then granting residence to their immediate family members may be worthy of consideration.
But that would be part of comp immigration reform, which is seemingly beyond our reach.

Meanwhile, we have to deal with the current situation.
The legit asylum seekers are accepting humanitarian visas & resettling in the safe areas of Mexico, where they can find work.

The real solution is to improve conditions in their home countries. The US can't do it alone. Billions in US aid gets funneled off in corruption & YankeeGoHome Banana Republic resentment persists. Until the magnetic pull of asylum/catch&release in the US is reduced & the asylum loopholes closed, we can't improve conditions enough to get them to stay home.

Think outside the box. Were there year round jobs when the Sooners settled Oklahoma? This is a much simpler and much less costly problem than settling a new planet.

Sure, solve the problem in those countries where you have entrenched corrupt governments and an entrenched enabling class. Not cheap and likely to be bloody, not to mention a thankless job.
