Some might argue that, but that's only because there were so many terrific tenders in a long stretch of such. The POY is definitely a differentiator, but there are multiple first team AA tenders over those years, multiple 2X, one 3X. Some won NC's, some didn't. Some won multiple.

First world problem!

I thought Piggy and Greenberg were the best Hopkins' Goalie/Defenseman combo ever.
3 NC's are hard to argue with, especially the last one when Hop couldn't buy a FO or groundball but still won anyway.

Quinn was also 2x tourney mvp in the NCAAs. He was behind another AA for two years. The conundrum was how do you sit an AA for a freshman. His game vs Cuse in the finals should be seen. I believe he held a great Cuse offense to 5.

2x POY, 2x NCAA MVP, 2x 1st team AA. Essentially if he was eligible for an award he won it.

He had the best save and outlet pass i have seen in the Cuse title game. Diving across the crease w one out- stretched arm/hand makes the save, lands, gets to his knees & throws a perfect outlet pass to a middie.

UVA took 35 shots to Hop's 25.
I can't find the saves from that day, but I recall it was a significant spread.

The advantage in the net that day was indeed likely the difference.
Michael and I were HS tender rivals, along with Bobby Clements...My dad always gave me a hard time for not going to UVA at the last moment...thought I would have made at least one more save in regulation... ;) Michael was first rate in every respect and a great guy too. Clem's season that year was so strong he and Michael split 1st team AA and they gave the goalie of the year award to him, which Michael had won the prior two years.

Greenberg was indeed terrific!

Lets give a little credit to the defensemen and defensive middies (team defense) in front of those excellent goalies. Geoff Berlin had Hank Kaestner (2 time Schmeiser Award winner); Mike Clark (Schmeiser Award winner) and John Cardillo (only 2nd team AA) all playing in front of him. Not a bad close defense. And in 1970, Scotty and McCool ended their bad blood and McCool agreed to play Varsity just for his Senior year (he had been playing for the Mt. Washington Wolfpack) and he was named 1st Team AA his Senior year. Some great teams with great and very good players everywhere. We will be back. As someone noted, it is a very proud tradition. I belong to an email group of approx. 100 former players, and they are determined that JHU will return. But they know that it is difficult and requires a lot of effort. It took a lot of effort to establish that winning record. I especially liked the comment from the new Offensive Coach, to the effect that he looked forward to being with people who had worn "the Jersey". He understands. ;)

Berlin started lacrosse as a middie.

I was talking with a friend about our new OC. Reminded me that before a Brown game at Brown he had a broken rib, and two other major injuries and refused to sit out. His dad was a piece of work too.

Absolutely, pretty incredible bunch of defenses and teams...and some really first rate tenders...

That's why I look to look at combinations. I saw Michael/Greenberg, Quinn/Deto and QK/Petro. Still think Mike/Mark were the best combination although Quinn was an amazing goalie. Held SU to 4 goals in the NC 85. He actually spotted them 3 goals to start the game, but only allowed one goal over the final 50 minutes. SU had superstars like Brad Kotz too.

Chi, it sounds like you may have played for Bob Scott. I actually got to know Bob Scott as he was very approachable and kind to everyone and he had a really engaging personality. He was the greatest ambassador for the sport.
I always wondered though, what was the magic that made Chic so great? What was it about him that he could get the best from every player on the field? What buttons did he push to get the team over the hump against super teams like Cornell?
Just wondering and would love to hear your thoughts.

I remembered it as 5 in the Cuse title game. Glad you corrected me. Quinn was a magician.

I would line a little i insight too ig it is there. I would occasionally play handball with Chic. I was a kid. It was brutal. Played hoops with Stephen Ambrose. Brutal also but he was something of a cheap shot artist. Chic never gave up anything in my games. Nothing. 7 straight national title games. One changed the way refs were assigned. Innovative.
On the sideline…..well he would probably get dinged as an embarrassment by some here.

The play I recall most recall from the 1985 NC game was a goal scored by Brian Wood.
Starting near a sideline he charged down GLE toward the goal , switched hands in a flash at the crease and scored. Beautiful !!!

I wonder how much better the two Hopkins teams would have been had Quinn started as a freshman and sophomore instead of sitting behind someone who was not as good but who had more seniority? I believe the “relief pitcher” game
was his sophomore year.
On a related note, someone mentioned Les Matthews. When he was a sophomore in high school, our starting goalie—a friend of mine—was senior who had started since his sophomore year. We were doing well, having lost only to Huntington and Hopkins frosh, but Mike Rentko boldly replaced our starting goalie with the tenth grader. The former starter spent the rest of the season on my end of the bench as we went on to win the MSA championship.
I remembered that lesson as a coach: play your best players regardless of grade. Naturally, most of your key players will end up being seniors and juniors, but don’t let tradition allow you to screw underclassmen and, ultimately, the team.

The goalie ahed of Quinn wasn’t just a seniority issue. He was am AA 3rd or HM. Some fans told me he was a better practice player as well. There are at least some who think Hopkins would have an additional title and maybe two. Hindsight is 20-20z.

In the year's that I have the privilege to attend Hopkins games, Tucker Durkin has been the best close defender. I would like to hear from those who have been watching much longer than I how Tucker stands up against the legends that keep getting mentioned. Thanks.

Durkin held Lyle Thompson to 0 goals and 0 assists on 5 turnovers in 2013. Thompson had 113 pts that year. ZERO on Durkin. Enough said. Lyle would keep dodging right at Durkin and over and over again Durkin would just turn him away.

Some might claim recency bias but Tucker is unquestionably among the greatest college defensemen this sport has ever seen. 2X Schmeisser winner. It's a shame those 2011/2012 teams never made a Final Four.

My quick reaction to placing Durkin is 3 behind Petro and Greenie. Talking with some fans who were before my time Mike Clark won 1x but a couple of people said almost any other time he would have won 2x. He played one year behind Kaestner. He is quoted by someone who knew him as saying he did not really like lax but played bcs he was the best at his position.

DeTommaso, also, in the mix.
