And what did Reagan do after he said that?

You got it: He increased the size of the Federal Government by 50%. And gave us the permanent Farm Bill---handing out money to farmers, and distorting the free market. And guys like you pretended that it was the big, bad Federal government that pulled us out of the recession....and guys like you believed Reagan, because you ALWAYS believe what a R President tells you when the chips are down.
leave ronny out of this. the size of the government did not increase by 50% on his watch, not even close.

and as has been mentioned... congress is where it is on budgets.

buffett's solution was something akin to if they don't come back with a balanced budget, they can't stay.
mine'd be they have to split the cost among them if they go over.

You and I both know that's a big, fat lie.

Bush could have cut government all he wanted. He had Congress.

Trump, too. For two years.

What did they do, instead? You got it. Bush outspent Clinton, and blew the budget surplus.

And Trump blew by Obama-level spending BEFORE this crisis hit. Trump will go down as the biggest big government President of all time.

All while his fans deny the math, and deny what Trump did.....

Thanks Holmes.

I'm a big fan of the Hitler parody video genre.

There's thousands of them, and usually hilarious.

Actually, I agree with every word here. Especially your last sentence.

My point, is simply that Republican Congressmen wanted the domestic spending....socialism, handouts, whatever you prefer to call it.....just as much, if not more than the Dems did.

Happy to hear the missus is done with her tour of duty. I think I can speak for everyone here when i ask you to give her a big hug, and an even bigger thank you from her fellow Americans.

You're right. It wasn't a 50% increase.....

....it was an 100% increase!

Federal Spending
1980: $500 Billion
1988: $1.04 Trillion

He DOUBLED the size of the Federal Government in 8 years. And yes, spending originates Congress.....but Ronnie had the veto. Pretty hard to argue that he fell asleep at the spending bill and "whoops" allowed the size of the Federal government to double without noticing.

It's almost as if ol' Ronnie was lying his butt off when he gave us that "government IS the problem" line. But a politician would NEVER lie to us, right? ;)

And pretty much every poster here would sign up for that, including me.

We've learned over the last 40 years that Americans LOVE big government, and LOVE all those handouts.....they just don't want to pay for them...and they don't want to admit that they get them.

nah. first, you're reading it wrong. presidents are elected, and then they take office the following january of course. the budget is (typically, until lately) already set. so they're not responsible for a budget in any regard until the following year. which in reagan's case would be the 1982 budget year. and run through the end of the 1989 budget year.
here is one of the more simple breakdowns:
https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/statist ... nd-outlays

you're also not factoring in something pretty important... it's in constant dollars. and the early 80s we were coming off some pretty whacky times for inflation. thankfully, they abated not too deep into when he took office, though inflation essentially accounted for over 40% of the 60%+ you see in government growth.
inflation adjusted his budgets grew about 2.5% per year over 8 years. not nothing, but about 20% total over 8 years.

That was when the flood gates were opened. Reagan wanted all those shiny new military toys. I remembered seeing some of them come on line. Our Hueys went away to be replaced by Blackhawks. The M60 tanks were replaced by M1s. M113s were replaced by Bradleys and so on and so on and so forth that was for all the branches of the military. You can disagree all day long and I understand that. Reagan was never going to get what he wanted without giving Tip something in return. Their horse trading was chicken feed to what goes on today. That's true. But it makes things worse, not better. I was simplifying the conversation by just using round years.

Yep. You're right here, too. Again....trying to simplify things.

So.....20% bigger.

So in other words, again----Reagan's claimed stance that government is bad, and shrinking the size and influence of government was a pile of buffalo bagels. ;)

Have a great weekend, wgdsr!

well, yes and no. gdp ran about 30% for his years. so its relative size and influence was smaller from start to finish. we don't seem to have that problem anymore.
do i have to leave? i'm in quarantine, i got nowhere else to go!!!

If you use GDP as a marker, Reagan looks even worse.....

Blowing 21.6, 22.5, 22.9, 21.6, 22.2, 21.9,21.9, 21.1, 20.7, 20.6 percent of GDP on Federal Government.

When the next D Potus arrived, he started at 20.5% of GDP brought it all the way down to 17.7% of GDP, and handed Bush a surplus.

Would you like to go over what Reagan did to the deficit? ;)
