Big OOC Games in the MIAA this week.

Calvert Hall (2-0): Wednesday home v. Hill Academy, Saturday v. Dominion (Va.) - the Hall took its usual trip down to NC this weekend to beat up on some cupcakes, but the real test starts Wednesday when the Canucks come to town :o

St. Paul's (1-0): Tuesday in Philly @ St. Joe's Prep, Friday v. Haverford - the Crusies got off to a hot start last week at home beating Landon 11-4, receiving significant contributions from new transfers Higgins (Loyola), Santos (OSU), & Jones (Hofstra)

McDonogh (1-0): Tuesday v. Haverford, Thursday @ Bullis - the Eagles topped Gonzaga in OT 12-11, junior Dane Swanson (Navy) and senior Liam Powderly (UVA Golf) shined

Boys' Latin (0-1): Tuesday v. Gonzaga, Thursday v. Calverton - the Lakers need to bounce back in a big way after being beaten from the first whistle by the Haverford Fords (the Fords should be in the MIAA with all the games they play against teams from the 410  )

St. Mary's (0-2): Friday @ Landon, Saturday @ St. Anne's Belfield - the Saints need a big weekend after tough losses to Georgetown Prep (10-7) and St. Stephen's & St. Agnes (18-14)

Loyola Blakefield (0-0): Tuesday @ Bullis, Friday v. Good Counsel - the Dons start with a tough test at a talented Bullis team, expect this to be a year with LOTS of growing pains for LB

Gilman (0-0): Tuesday v. Georgetown Prep, Thursday v. Hill Academy, Saturday v. Bullis - the Hounds start with a gauntlet of an opening week, going 2-1 would be a great way to begin Matthews' final year on Roland Ave

Crazy schedule. From the Penn Charter twitter feed, Hill Academy won 11-4. By the way, I really miss the old Laxpower for the high school scores and schedules. I know it was a ton of work but it was great. I especially appreciated the links on the schedules to be able to jump from one team to the next. IL made an attempt this year but it doesn't seem like anyone is posting scores. At least not yet.

Say what you will about what Hill is (and I have said it) but this is once again astounding. 5 games in 5 days thousands of miles from home. Hall has given them great games but does anyone think that if this was in Canada and Hall was in the midst of 5 games in 5 days this wouldn’t be a solid thrashing? They aren’t a high school, but they sure are better than any high school. On a more positive MIAA note, great showing for McD with a convincing win over a Haverford squad that blew out BL.

PCOW: Hill is 470 miles from Baltimore, not 'thousands'. lol. That being said, hats off to Brodie Merrill for always bringing that team heat to a week in Baltimore.

For the Hill kids, the Baltimore week is by far their favorite week of the year. The kids get up for Culver and now Brunswick, admittedly, but the intensity of the Baltimore week is unequaled. I'd add that Calvert Hall seems to bring the best out of the Hill kids. If any of you get a chance to see the game online, I think you will see the game played basically at the highest level in high school for a full 60 minutes.

Congrats to both schools, both coaches, and also to what I saw as about 30 kids who will make impacts on various college programs. Such a great sport.

I watched Hill vs both JC and CH. These teams really got after it for 60 minutes. I mean it was intense. Heard the same from a coworker who saw the Gilman game. We both agreed it was some great lax this week. Glad Hill has made this trip the past few years. Very fun to watch lax at its best!

LB 12 Good Counsel 5.

St Mary’s 10 Landon 4.
St Mary’s led 5-2 at halftime.

John Carrol 13 Kent Island 7.
John Carrol led 8-2 at halftime.

Haverford 12 St. Paul’s 9.
Haverford led 6-5 at halftime.

Baltimore Sun Preseason top 15:

https://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/hig ... story.html
1. Calvert Hall
Outlook: Despite significant graduation hits, including two-time All-Metro Player of the Year Jacob Kelly, the two-time defending MIAA A champion Cardinals have quality talent remaining and others ready to step up to maintain their status as the area’s top team. The Cardinals will possess the ball and score plenty of goals with Daniel Kelly and Jack Sawyer leading the attack and All-Metro midfielders Grant Mitchell and Cole Herbert dominating the middle. A largely new defense has talent but inexperience with Jake Snyder the lone starter back and Jackson Marshall taking over in goal.

2. Boys’ Latin
Outlook: Junior Brendan Grimes is the area’s top returning attackman and he has quality company in Cameron Spencer and Ben Smith to help the Lakers score plenty of goals. The defense has a good foundation led by Blake Gable and Reagan McNemar with goalie JT Morton in his first season as a starter. The Lakers lost a handful of quality players to graduation and faceoff specialist Payton Giberson transferred, leaving the team with some holes to fill. Farrell has been impressed with the leadership he’s seen from his returnees and the promise shown by the newcomers to keep the Lakers in the championship mix.

3. McDonogh
Outlook: The Eagles might not have the same depth and as big a senior class as past years, but they do have a talented, tight-knit group with strengths at key positions. Attackmen Liam Powderly and Matt Hilgartner, along with midfielder Dane Swanson are proven players on offense; Gable Braun is a top faceoff specialist; and senior goalies Evan Long and Patrick Scarborough provide much-needed stability in back with Jackson Bonitz the team’s lone defenseman returning with considerable experience. If the defense — a longstanding team strength — comes together, the Eagles can make a formidable run for the title.

4. Gilman
Outlook: The Greyhounds have a couple things working in their favor as they aim for a playoff spot: experienced talent covering the entire field and added motivation with Matthews coaching in his 15th and final season. Their defense might be the best in the league with goalie Noah Klein playing behind Xander Martin, Hank Bethel and Jack Stuzin. William Godine and Logan Paff are the midfield glue with a junior-laden attack led by Billy Spillman. The pieces and intangibles are in place for a significant resurgence at Gilman.

5. St. Mary’s
Outlook: Despite losing 20 graduates from last year’s team, the Saints still have some of their top talent back to make another playoff push. Attackman Ian Krampf, midfielder Alex Wicks and defenseman BJ Burlace all have game-changing talent and others return to solidify each area on the field. Jack Kerr and Zach Dudley will share faceoff duties, and the Saints will need players from last year’s JV team to provide the depth needed to hang in the conference.

6. Loyola Blakefield
Outlook: Ubriaco, a longtime assistant coach at Boys’ Latin, takes over for Ben Rubeor and has high expectations as the Dons look to continue to be a formidable foe in the area’s toughest league. Throughout the preseason, he has been impressed with the team’s athleticism, speed and competitiveness with a midfield led by Alex Breschi and Chase Llewellyn its biggest strength. Attackman Jack Koras will be counted on to produce on attack, while goalie Kevin Ellington is the anchor in back. The Dons graduated eight starters from last year, so they’ll need others to take on bigger roles and new leaders to emerge.

7. St. Paul’s
Outlook: The Crusaders are looking to bounce back after missing out on the playoffs last season and Whitty believes the needed foundation is set to do just that. All-Metro long pole Mason Woodward is the leader who gets everybody going with endless energy and high skills. He’s one of 21 seniors. The attack returns intact with last year’s leading scorer Andrew Milani bringing a more well-rounded game this season. Seth Higgins comes over from Gerstell as one of several key transfers who will help shore up the midfield, and Woodward also will play some at close defense.

8. Severn
Outlook: The Admirals are looking to make a third straight trip to the MIAA A playoffs with a senior-laden group that goes into the season with more positives than question marks. Attack and midfield will start out as the team strengths while a largely new defense gets settled. Defenseman Owen Cauley will be leaned on in the back with Henry Rentz a key cog in the midfield and Jon Jarosz the catalyst on attack. With 14 seniors providing leadership, the best midfield depth in years and a physical, athletic group, Christie believes his Admirals can hang with the top teams.

9. Westminster

10. Severna Park

11. Archbishop Spalding
Outlook: With a mix of returning talent and promising newcomers from last year’s league-winning JV team, Spalding is determined to take the next step and reach the playoffs this season. Attackman Burke Webb, midfielder Will Sherwood and defenseman Ryan McDaniel provide the Cavaliers with skill and experience at each position on the field. A capable junior class with attackman Russell Melendez and midfielder Tucker Denault are among the other returnees expected to step up, and newcomers Saam Olexo and Sam Beall will be counted on to shore up the defense.

12. Glenelg

13. Marriotts Ridge

14. Hereford

15. Broadneck

Others considered: Centennial (12-6, not ranked), C. Milton Wright (10-10, not ranked); Gerstell (11-8, not ranked), Mount Saint Joseph (6-11, not ranked), Patterson Mill (14-6, No. 15), Towson (14-5, not ranked)
