The New Face of Women's Lacrosse

Like it or not--Charlotte North is the new face of women's lacrosse. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if those who are endeavoring to grow the game want it that way and are pleased to a degree that Cummings and Treanor have retired from Team USA. This is North's time. She is immensely popular with the next generation. The young girls gravitate to her in their thousands. She's who the sport wants to represent the game at this point.

Is North the greatest of all time? Please. Even she shuns that title. Does she have deficiencies in her game? Of course. What player doesn't. But for this time in the sport Charlotte North is The Great One. A spectacularly gifted athlete with amazing stick skills and myriad ways of putting the ball in the net.

I chuckle at the criticisms of her game in this AU exhibition scrimmage experiment. As if her performance there somehow diminishes her great career in the NCAA. She retired as the all time leading goal scorer--and did it playing in the ACC--the undisputed toughest conference in all of D1. She put the Eagles on her back and willed them to their first and only national title which Apuzzo was never able to do. Was Apuzzo a better all around player? Of course. But she was never able to bring them home in the final the way North did in '21.

So let the shrinking group of naysayers squawk about her comportment on and off the field. The rest of the world isn't listening to that increasingly muted din.

I imagine Stony Brook has an equally emphatic determination...

She has a lot of fun with her teammates, no matter who they are. I can't count how many pictures I've seen like this from Team USA and AU where North is in the center of or joining in the fun and laughs.

Indeed. Head coach Spencer and recently hired (June ’22) assistant coach Emily Munro are the coaching staff at this point. Strange--seems the Cardinal made Orashen an Orwellian unperson (intentionally or otherwise) as there is no longer any mention of her on the team website as a defensive coordinator during that time period.

Pretty goal. More good looking talent for the Cardinal. Peep Williams--MVP of the All America Girls Senior game with 4G, 1A, 4GB, 5DC and 1 CT.

This Past Week's AU Lacrosse games on ESPN channels

I took a screenshot of this just a few minutes ago. I have my YouTubeTV account set up to automatically record any AU event. This is what is new in my library, as it were. Seems that 3 games were televised and three games were streamed, though I was unable to locate today's replays on espn+ though the AU Twitter account listed both of Sunday's games as streaming on plus. I agree with njbill's assessment. The interest just isn't there. Sure there are some folks who are really enjoying the games; but it's as I have maintained right from first draw last year--the games are meaningless if they don't count in the standings on the way to some kind of team championship. Larry was always adamant about any pro leagues for women's lacrosse at this point in time--there isn't enough interest in the college game yet to warrant a professional venture. He's right, as is njbill. There ain't enough fannies in the seats. But as long as Mama don't take my *Kodachrome away, I'm more than okay.

Who Will Emerge Next Season?

One of the many exciting aspects to a new season of NCAA women's lacrosse is the anticipation of which players will emerge from the bench and/or underclass to impress and dazzle on the field. Case in point in 2022 was BC's Kayla Martello. The sophomore midfielder got the vote of confidence from Coach Acacia to become a starter. She didn't disappoint scoring 51 goals, 6 assists, 5 GB's, 5 CT's and 3 DC's. She's bold to the cage and developing into an aggressive and effective redefender. At 5' 8" she's difficult to defend and deceptively swift to get away from on the ride. She should be that much more impressive in '23. But who will emerge from BC? Someone named Hasselbeck? Agostino? Or maybe a junior who suddenly impresses so much as to demand more playing time? We'll see soon enough. Only 193 days till opening draw...

Impressive stat line. Stick side high in college is usually a save. Even in the PAC12.

Typically it’s on the regular YouTube, D. It’s also usually announced on the AU Twitter account @AUProSports beforehand as to the time.

If not how do you get to it (couldn't figure it out last week)?
