One of the last polls of the season I'm guessing. Do we still submit polls once the regular season ends? Conference championships? In any event--here are this weeks 25 honorees.

1 - Carolina. Running clock win over Ginny. Waiting on Duke Thursday night to show who's the real sheriff of the ACC. It’ll be Carolina--easy.

2 - Duke. You take down #2, You belong at #2. Not for long though (see 1)

3 - Northwestern. Took care of business against JHU

4 - Boston College. Eye opening loss to Duke with red flags. Next up, Syracuse at Alumni. We’ll see how they do against another team looking for revenge. I’m picking Syracuse.

5 - Maryland wiped the field with the Tigers on 1952 then polished off the Bucs on theirs; not allowing a goal for the entire 2nd half after their defense clamped down. They keep passing each test. JMU is beginning to look more and more like an anomaly. Terps would beat them if they played them again. I think the Terps beat the Cats Saturday but I’ll be walking on sunshine if they don’t.

6 - Stony Brook is still in a state of limbo until the tournament. Gorged on another cupcake. This time UMass Lowell to the tune of 16-1. They must be bored to tears playing all these weak sisters. Two more this week with Binghamton and UMBC.

7 - Syracuse. Wiped the field with Cornell and kicked the stuffing out of Louisville (what has happened to Louisville this year? They seem to be going backward. Maybe the players aren’t hearing the coach anymore. I know a few transferred out during the off season for whatever reason). Anyway—Big time showdown Friday night in Beantown.

8 - Denver won a surprisingly tight one over Georgetown (sometimes you just never know if the other team will show up) and still only has the one loss from the truncated game vs BC. (I wonder how the nerds calculate a partial game for SOS/RPI? Do they divide the square root of the prime number and multiply that by the win ratio then subtract the absolute value using the Bell Curve? Hmmm…)

9 - Loyola cruised over Army 16-7. Status quo till the NCAA tourney.


10 - Arizona State. Beat up Buffs in Colorado to pull into a 3 way tie atop the Pac-12. Five straight wins now. Every game it seems this team is setting a new record and/or getting their first win against a given team, or conference, etc. McCormack really has something special going on in Horace Greeley’s territory. So far, they are this years Rutgers. Very excited to see how far they get. They’re hot at just the right time. One minor bone to pick—I detest program nicknames of demons and devils and refuse to say them or write them. Just a thing with me. Trying out a new nickname for them. Henceforth they will be the Arizona State Golden Tridents until something better occurs to me. Love this team though.

11 - JMU. Two more blowout wins over two more weak sisters. Yawn.

12 - Florida beat Vandy

13 - UMass 11 straight wins now. Easily handled St. Joe’s and La Salle

14 - USC beat Buffs 15-8 and Oregon. On collision course with the Golden Tridents for 1st place in the Pac-12 this Friday at Tempe. That orta be a dilly if AZ State can find someone who knows how to work a camera other than a student.

15 - Yale keeps rolling with another Ivy League win, this time over Cornell 15-9.

16 - Virginia Tech beat Coastal Carolina easily. Set for the Battle of Virginia vs state rival Ginny this Thursday on Thompson Field in prime time.

17 - Jacksonville wiped out Stetson 26-3. Nothing important looming for them until the Sunshine State Showdown on the 27th.

18 - UConn beat Villanova 16-15

19 - Richmond beat St Bonny’s 24-9 and Davidson 15-11

20 - Stanford took the week off

21 - Virginia stepped on by the Heels 17-7

22 - Ohio State. Lost to Maryland 14-8. Tried to hang for a while. 8-8 at the half but then the clock struck midnight.

23 - Princeton beat up Dartmouth 17-5. They started the year off with such promise but became pedestrian quickly when they started playing the upper tier teams.

24 - Rutgers beat Wagner 13-11 and San Diego St 14-4. Maybe the beginning of a second wind—though their two wins were over cupcakes. Cupcakes? You starting that again?!

25 - Michigan beat Penn St 8-7 in OT. Michigan just loves winning late games at Panzer Stadium.

Speaking of TL, this would be a perfect time for him to resurface. His Terps are looking fine. I seriously wonder whether anything happened to him.

Idiot Poll for this week, which excludes any team below .500 (that's UVA and Notre Dame):

1. UNC -- not much to say, except that they are the best and deepest team in the sport right now.

2. BC -- still believe, game in and game out, this is the second best team in the country. Hall had an abysmal -- and I mean really bad -- first half in particular, the defense played out of its normal game for the first half. A good loss to a good team, a good lesson for BC.

3. Syracuse -- as in previous weeks, homer bias. Three losses on the year: a game Syracuse should have won, a game in which they just didn't come to play, and a loss to the No. 1 team. Game in and game out, still my No. 3. The only thing that makes me want to push them down in the order is the loss of MT and the diminished production from the injury to MC.

4. Northwestern

5. Stony Brook -- yes, weak opponents the rest of the way. But they played the teams that would schedule them and did pretty well, losing narrowly to Syracuse and convincingly to Northwestern.

6. Loyola -- still hanging with the Hounds as the No. 6. I think this jumble of teams from No. 3 through my No. 9, below, are a really close call.

7. Maryland -- I confess I am coming around on this team, at least offensively. And of course, having noted the offense, I do see that the OSU failed to score in the second half yesterday. Maryland strikes me as good, maybe very good, not great. They play nice offense, and 45 and 40 are really terrific players. They have a good goalkeeper, who seems to make it a habit of bailing out a defense that yields good shots to opponents.

8. Duke -- impressive win over BC for sure. But call me skeptical. I think UNC will beat them by five or more Thursday night.

9. Denver -- still the team no one wants to draw in the first round. I hope they get Northwestern somewhere in the early rounds.

12. Princeton -- I fear I have them too high, but my Uncle Jack went there, and I really liked Uncle Jack. When I played golf with him, years ago, he never forgot to buy his nephew a gin and tonic at the turn to the Back Nine. So, you know, No. 12.

13. Rutgers -- I have them here because I think they could beat the teams listed below. Except that they lost at home to ASU. They might be a problem for readers, but not for me. All decisions here are, as I say, arbitrary and final...for now.

15. Yale -- nice win over Cornell. Here's the problem: Yale looks good, they're 9-2. But they lost to Notre Dame convincingly, and since them have subsisted on relative puff pastries. But my brother went there, great pizza, Mory's, Whiffenpoofs and Spizzwinks, so, No. 15

17. USC -- interesting rematch with ASU coming up. USC won the first match, 17-10. We are going to see which team has improved most since March 25.

Maybe I missed something. BC loses a game by 1 on the road to Duke when there Tewaaraton winner and goalie have awful games and they drop behind NW in the eyes of many. A team they beat by 9 this year. BC's other loss was to UNC by 1. Has anyone else had a close game with UNC? Not sure how that is possible. I still have NC,BC,Cuse,NU in that order with Duke and MD getting meaningful consideration. With Jenner Duke is always dangerous
