China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!

Petey -- as I posted yesterday, many countries are relaxing their restrictions.Let's go back to work. Even Greenland is relaxing social distancing rules.
Which ones?
The ones who started earlier than we did, flattened their curves sooner/lower, and have much lower rates of cases and deaths than us.
Austria, Denmark, Czech Republic, Germany to name a few are loosening things up.
But if you acted late, non-seriously and ineffectively (e.g. UK and Sweden), then you have to suck up more weeks/months of hard restrictions.
Had the USA acted a week or two earlier, we'd probably be in a position today to start opening back up. But we didn't do that. Today's NY times has a great chart (posted above) showing how different/better earlier would have been.
No free lunch, Petey.

The stock market up again today, another ho-hum 2.4%. Those market dummies don't read this board's dystopian predictions!
If we did buy them, I’d volunteer to be their leader.

Todays deaths reached a new daily high and again casts doubt as to whether the turning a top is real or not. See what tomorrow brings.

Did today’s count include deaths now classified as COVID 19

I don't think so. NYS share or daily deaths is decreasing. I saw Cuomo's reported comments, but I don't think the official counts are being handled that way.Typical Lax Dad wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2020 9:01 pmDid today’s count include deaths now classified as COVID 19
Re: All things Chinese CoronaVirus
Sweden is only fine if you ignore the numbers and trends. Right now Sweden, a country of 10 million or so has 1033 deaths, slightly higher rate than in the US with 33x the number of people and 26,000 deaths. However if you look at the IMHE projections, under Sweden's do very little response, the number of deaths isn't expected to peak there until mid May and the total number of deaths is expected to exceed 18,000, which will amount to almost the same number of total deaths in European countries such as Italy, Spain, the U.K. and France with anywhere from 4 to 6 times the population of Sweden. Not to mention that the US would have to have nearly 600,000 deaths to equal Sweden's projected rate. Even more pertinent, Sweden's other Baltic neighbors, Finland, Norway and Denmark, all with about 5 million inhabitants and strict self distancing and quarentine measures are projected to have 211, 811, and 1660 deaths in total respectively. IMHE isn't a "stupid" (using your words) democraic tool, just a group o doctors doing their best to inform people where they think this virus is headed. Their projection for non intervenng Sweden: far an away the worst outcome in Europe. Pay attention to the numbers PB, and not the voices in your head and on Fox news, and you will end up seeming less ill informed.Peter Brown wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2020 8:33 pmggait wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2020 8:28 pmPetey -- as I posted yesterday, many countries are relaxing their restrictions.Let's go back to work. Re: All things Chinese CoronaVirus
The dip was likely related to the Sunday effect. Fewer deaths get reported on Sunday. See Cathy O'Neill's Bloomberg piece I linked to somewhere.

Keep watching Brazil to see what a lack of response leads to. Fortunately the people are distancing despite the leader. Nonetheless, they are headed for dark times.
On other fronts, Spain went back to work this week. Thank God they have a socialist government to lead them through this .![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

More than 2,400 deaths today. The week-over-week death toll is still rising.jhu72 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2020 9:10 pmI don't think so. NYS share or daily deaths is decreasing. Would not put much stock in the downward trend in new confirmed cases, as that seems to track a corresponding decrease in testing.
New York reclassified 3,700 cases as coronavirus deaths. So, total deaths are now around 30,000 ... all in just 10 weeks or so. By comparison, 18,000 perished from H1N1 in an entire year between 2014 and 2015.
Meanwhile, South Korea, which responded quickly to the coronavirus crisis, has reported 222 total deaths.
Trump’s malignant narcissism and incompetence have already cost tens of thousands of American lives.
What a tragedy.

Compare daily numbers to the same day last week. That will provide a good sense for the overall trend.

Maybe. The past three weekends there has been an apparent under reporting effect. It is not just Sunday. What I don't understand is why the catch up didn't occur Monday. Monday was less than Sunday. In any case I think the turn is likely real, just not the sharp down turn that appeared. A turn and then moving sideways makes more sense. We will see in the coming days.
Re: All things CoronaVirus
The average daily number of deaths the last 4 days is about 130 less than the average of the previous 4 days.DocBarrister wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2020 10:32 pmCompare daily numbers to the same day last week. That will provide a good sense for the overall trend.

To clarify, no new deaths were added to the total for NY State. 3778 of the 10367 reported deaths were just classified as "probable due to COVID-19". Please see the attached link. For reference in the time period from 3/13/20 to 4/13/20 there were 8184 deaths NOT caused by COVID-19. Just stating for reference, a very close number to the actually amount of COVID-19 Deaths.

So Joe, if I read this correctly, there has really not be any change in reported numbers to Health departments and CDC and the public. It is just NYS better explaining what they have done??JoeMauer89 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2020 10:56 pmDoc,DocBarrister wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2020 10:28 pmMore than 2,400 deaths today. not many scientists would compare the two diseases in total deaths without context.
like that corona may end up with a case fatality rate of 50 -100x h1n1.

Correct. They have broken it done to further clarify the deaths by various means demographics, etc. This gives the public a chance to see who unfortunately is getting hit the hardest by this virus and provides much needed context on a daly basis.
Best,
