Economics professor Roland G. Fryer Jr. will be allowed to return to teaching and research roles at Harvard this week after a two-year suspension for violating Faculty of Arts and Sciences sexual harassment policies, Dean of Social Science Lawrence D. Bobo wrote in an email to the Economics department last Thursday.

Fryer will be permitted to teach undergraduate and graduate courses and conduct research, though he will be barred from holding any advisory or supervisory positions for the next two years, Bobo wrote. His teaching will be subject to “certain conditions” and be at the discretion of FAS Dean Claudine Gay.

Bobo wrote that Fryer completed trainings on sexual harassment, boundary setting, and power dynamics in the workplace during his suspension. Gay placed him on leave in July 2019 after an investigation found that he committed verbal sexual harassment against several female staffers and fostered a hostile work environment in his former lab.

The Crimson reported in 2018 that Fryer was the subject of at least four Harvard-led investigations, including one into his spending and the lab’s finances. One of the complainants, a former female employee of Fryer’s, also filed a separate complaint with the Massachusetts Comission Against Discrimination that was later withdrawn.

The complainants alleged Fryer had engaged in sexual misconduct for years and fostered a hostile environment for women at the Education Innovation Laboratory, a research group he founded and led. Harvard shuttered the lab following the sanctions.

“There is nothing easy about this situation,” Bobo wrote on Thursday. “The behaviors that precipitated Professor Fryer’s leave did real harm to members of our community and for many the sense of hurt and betrayal is still quite near.”

Fryer’s return comes at the discretion of Gay and other top University officials. Gay had announced in levying the sanctions in 2019 that Fryer would continue to face additional restrictions upon his return.

Prior to the complaints, Fryer had been a star economics professor with a growing national profile. At age 30, he became the youngest Black professor to be awarded tenure at Harvard. He won the MacArthur Fellowship in 2011, and the Clark Medal in 2015, widely regarded as one of the most prestigious accolades in economics.

In his email, Bobo shared an apology letter from Fryer, in which Fryer reflected on his transgressions.

Why didn't they fire him??? Simple solution for such troubling accusations. He is allowed to still teach at Harvard in a much less influential role. Is he on double secret probation??? In local news 2 people were shot a little while ago on N Plymouth Ave. If your saying you think I'm lying then grow some balls and just say so.

At least 13 peer reviewed (the FLP standard, though common sense should suffice) scientific research papers-& counting~have concluded lowering men’s T doesn’t negate the distinct physical advantages they possesses over women. They can continue to compete in male sports, if they’re good enough.

They did not fire him because he is a Tenured Professor. This is a contract between the individual and the university - he is a lifetime employee! There is no circling the wagons. The story you presented with the video IS CLEAR BULLSH*T. You just want to believe it!

However, transwomen still had a 9% faster mean run speed after the 1 year period of testosterone suppression that is recommended by World Athletics for inclusion in women’s events.

... I read the study and it is not what you are selling it as. There are a number of issues with this study.. For transmen (originally women) after 1 year of hormones, there was damn near no difference. The push up and run times had equalized - no advantage either way, and sit ups, the transmen had an advantage (not quantified). For transwomen (originally men) they ran the test for a 2 year period. The pull up and sit up times had equalized - no advantage either way, the run time was 12% faster for the transwomen (originally men).

What is clear (based soley on this research) is that there remains an advantage for transwomen after transitioning for 1 year and a smaller advantage after transitioning for 2 years. It is not clear that after the advantages in sit ups, pull ups and run times are understood, how they translate into advantages in particular sports. Take swimming, (my wife was a college swimmer so I checked with her) - the pull up discrepancy would seem to be more important than the running or sit ups. There is no pull up advantage according to this research. So it would seem there is little accrued advantage in speed swimming. The point is this research when applied to actual sports would have to be analyzed carefully - that is if you think this research really answers the question, which I don't.

I will summarize the things that bother me with this particular bit of research -
(1) the lack of monotonicity in the results, ie., for instance the transwomen running results show a 9% advantage after 1 year and a 12% advantage after 2 years and back to close to 9% after 2.5 years -- this is indicative of pretty big error bars on these results I think.
(2) why do transmen in sit ups accrue an advantage over "real men" and the research didn't quantify as far as I could see? This with (1) above points to inappropriately large error bars.
(3) the research subjects were air force personnel undergoing transformation - not athletes. It is not clear that this is a good proxy for athletes. I understand why the researchers made the choice, but it doesn't guarantee a good proxy. For instance I seriously doubt an air force male transitioning to a female is anywhere near as motivated to push for the musculature of a female athlete as that athlete would.

So there are some significant questions unanswered. Doesn't make this bad research, it does however leave significant questions. It hints at an enduring advantage for men transitioning to women in competitive sports, but it is far from proof. More research is needed to prove the hypothesis of those who have a problem with transwomen competing in sporting contests with natural born women.

Very interesting guy, all sorts of interesting work...much of it controversial, sure, but Harvard, like other Ivies, actually embraces that sort of thing, including from conservative perspectives, much as that reality runs counter to the narrative of Ivies being bastions of solely hyper-liberal orthodoxy.

Especially untrue in many of the Economics departments, including Harvard's.
