Going back to a discussion we had a while back regarding the shift of the balance of power to private schools even on LI, I took a look at the Under Armour AA rosters for this year and compared it to 2015 and 2016.
This year's North team has a total...TOTAL...of four public school kids. Only two of them are Long Island kids (Cal Girard (Manhasset) and Jake Spallina (Mt Sinai))
The North team in 2015 had 15 public school kids! Including Long Islanders Dan Bucaro (WM), Jake McCullogh (WM), Ryan Bray (SWR), Tyler Dunn (Manhasset), James Sullivan (GC), Tommy Wright (GC), Joey Froccaro (Port Washington), and Eddie Bouhall (Lynbrook).
In 2016 there were 14 public school kids, including LIers Brian Willetts (Smithtown East), Dan Rooney (Smithtown East), Ryan Tierney (Pequa), Lucas Cotler (Syosset), and Jacob Giacalone (Sachem North)
Obviously these AA teams are not a perfect proxy for the best players in a given year, but they certainly support the theory that Long Island public school lacrosse is not what it once was.
