I believe everyone is on board that Fauci is a competent human being. But it's one thing to respect his views on the virus, and another to assume he knows what is also best for every human being out there. This is a confusing puzzle of variable inputs; we can not simply overlook how desperate people are now, and how much more desperate they are about to get. We might not have 1 more month to stave off civil unrest. And that is coming if we go one more month without competent dissemination of cash especially to those who absolutely need it. Many people who post here obviously can withstand 2 or even 12 months of economic malaise...that is not true for the overwhelming majority of Americans. This puzzle is not as simple as saying 'we need to socially distance until whenever'. Civil unrest is right around the corner.
We are in a bad spot because your guy made some bad decisions. Had we got right on top of it and had been better prepared we would have had a chance to be in and out of it sooner. My guess is we start to transition at the end of May. I don’t know who said we are like this from now on. We are like this in order to get our arms around it. Hopefully we are better prepared next time. It’s your guy’s fault. Back to timeout for you. Enjoy your day.
Tapper asked Fauci a straight question, with the preamble that reporting was that the scientific team recommended physical distancing the third week of February, but why did the White House not offer that recommendation to the public until the 16th, close to month later?

Fauci effectively confirmed that was the case, "sometimes you offer recommendations but they aren't taken"...he danced around more when asked whether it would have made a difference in lives lost, but certainly didn't say no. It was clear that it did. And it's clear that the economic impact would have been less.

It's also clear that he's trying to figure out some way to let Trump release some sort of restrictions in May. It's clear that he doesn't think anything major in the way of restrictions should slow down until we're actually ready to test and contact trace broadly. and it's clear that we remain a long way from that point.

Face saving for Trump, but not anything that would actually invite a resurgence.

Fauci's in a tough position.
He wants to give the public the best advice he's allowed to give... without losing Trump in the process.

Fauci's appearance this morning on CNN (and I wrote about it on Media Matters here) and how CNN plays it in this write-up is a great example of how the media lies and guides its rather simpleton-viewership to think something when in fact that is not what was said.

Fauci said repeatedly he was not in the business of being a Monday morning quarterback, something many here are fond of doing.

Well, just took a little trip to the store on the bike (couple miles each way, no biggie), must say it's pretty freaky out there. Decibel level at about zero, no trouble getting across roads with the bike, next to no one out and about. Was good to see the Easter Bunny still came around, saw Mom and her two little girls with their Easter baskets out in their front yard, both had pretty full baskets.
People are definitely spooked and freaked out. Gonna be a loooong time before we get back to normal, this is going to play with their heads/behaviors for a quite some time.

Again the light orange dashed curve line shows the apparent turning (Daily Number of Deaths). We will see if this evenings data continues to confirm.

Deaths?

This is from the CDC itself:

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvss/coro ... deaths.pdf

Should “COVID-19” be reported on the death certificate only with a confirmed test? COVID-19 should be reported on the death certificate for all decedents where the disease caused or is assumed to have caused or contributed to death. Certifiers should include as much detail as possible based on their knowledge of the case, medical records, laboratory testing, etc. If the decedent had other chronic conditions such as COPD or asthma that may have also contributed, these conditions can be reported in Part II. (See attached Guidance for Certifying COVID-19 Deaths)

With this "knowledge", you trusting the death count numbers, based on the CDC's recommendations to just, essentially, "wing it" ?

dislaxxic wrote: Sun Apr 12, 2020 10:57 am How the Pandemic Will End [The Atlantic]

"Even a perfect response won’t end the pandemic. As long as the virus persists somewhere, there’s a chance that one infected traveler will reignite fresh sparks in countries that have already extinguished their fires. This is already happening in China, Singapore, and other Asian countries that briefly seemed to have the virus under control. Under these conditions, there are three possible endgames: one that’s very unlikely, one that’s very dangerous, and one that’s very long.

The first is that every nation manages to simultaneously bring the virus to heel, as with the original SARS in 2003. Given how widespread the coronavirus pandemic is, and how badly many countries are faring, the odds of worldwide synchronous control seem vanishingly small.

The second is that the virus does what past flu pandemics have done: It burns through the world and leaves behind enough immune survivors that it eventually struggles to find viable hosts. This “herd immunity” scenario would be quick, and thus tempting. But it would also come at a terrible cost: SARS-CoV-2 is more transmissible and fatal than the flu, and it would likely leave behind many millions of corpses and a trail of devastated health systems. The United Kingdom initially seemed to consider this herd-immunity strategy, before backtracking when models revealed the dire consequences. The U.S. now seems to be considering it too.

The third scenario is that the world plays a protracted game of whack-a-mole with the virus, stamping out outbreaks here and there until a vaccine can be produced. This is the best option, but also the longest and most complicated.

It depends, for a start, on making a vaccine. If this were a flu pandemic, that would be easier. The world is experienced at making flu vaccines and does so every year. But there are no existing vaccines for coronaviruses—until now, these viruses seemed to cause diseases that were mild or rare—so researchers must start from scratch. The first steps have been impressively quick. Last Monday, a possible vaccine created by Moderna and the National Institutes of Health went into early clinical testing. That marks a 63-day gap between scientists sequencing the virus’s genes for the first time and doctors injecting a vaccine candidate into a person’s arm. “It’s overwhelmingly the world record,” Fauci said.

But it’s also the fastest step among many subsequent slow ones. The initial trial will simply tell researchers if the vaccine seems safe, and if it can actually mobilize the immune system. Researchers will then need to check that it actually prevents infection from SARS-CoV-2. They’ll need to do animal tests and large-scale trials to ensure that the vaccine doesn’t cause severe side effects. They’ll need to work out what dose is required, how many shots people need, if the vaccine works in elderly people, and if it requires other chemicals to boost its effectiveness."

..
This pandemic is going to demonstrate in an elegant fashion just how wrong we are in trusting the "free market" with the world population's health! The world is going to survive this. It is however going to rain on our collective parade for years to come. It is a fantasy, according to most scientists familiar with vaccine production that we are going to have a vaccine in 12 to 18 months. The consensus "fear" is more like 4 years! There is no one who thinks we will not be able to develop a vaccine.

When SARS broke out we rushed to develop a vaccine. The epidemic wore on for 4 years. Finally brought to heel by semi-effective therapies, understanding the nature of the disease and being able to contain it. It wasn't until then that a likely vaccine, at the very end of pandemic was found. The vaccine developmental testing was brought to a halt, for lack of market. SARS affected far fewer people. Industry wouldn't continue to development to the end and government funding - which is largely market driven - dried up. Still no vaccine today.

SARS is related to COVID-19. It is unknown how effective the SARS vaccine would be against COVID-19, a close cousin. But the best minds think we should have completed the development of the SARS vaccine and tested it, used it in regions prone to SARS. Learned more about the disease. Held the vaccine in reserve for other corona virus variants. Restarting those efforts, and hopefully being successful now takes time.

I’m really hoping it changes how a lot of things happen in the United States.

People as a whole here work too hard and are pushed to raise tax revenue for the gov. US citizens need to take a cue from Europe and slow down and take a moment for themselves, their families, and look out for others.

Two huge takeaways- Hoping that on the other side of this there is much less of a need to be in the office 40+ hrs a week and less of a push for kids to spend for overpriced brick and mortar university costs.

A good read despite the veering off to political bs at the end:
Yes. And I'm heartened by the selflessnes I see in our community. Time will tell. Thank you for sharing that!

TLD has found the answer: Trump. I swear, no matter what happens, it's always on Trump. Not even certain why we bother here...

It is pretty laughable. Trump bears the rightful blame of a lot of things. But it’s becoming the boy who cried wolf from the media’s talking heads. It’s their only taking point. “Trump bad.”

We’ve come full circle on all the “information.” And regardless of the news and how it breaks or evolves now-social distancing, testing, modeling, preparedness, travel bans- WHO honesty, China’s honesty, what DRs know, when they knew it, the news has swung both ways on all of these issues. And regardless of what the experts say today- It was wrong. We swear. There is only one fall guy. Trump.

They have laid the whole pandemic on Trump’s shoulders. At least that’s their thesis. They are now crossing their fingers that it sticks and it motivates people to come out and vote for an otherwise completely uninspiring Biden.
