Hop probably will but shouldn’t at this point.

Yes, only 13 undefeated champions.

This may be the year, with the oddities of reduced / no
OOC scheduling, the flood of top talent transfers, no ivies
in the mix, certainly Maryland, Duke and UNC are
candidates for undefeated national champions.

Duke and UNC play each other on both 4/1 and 5/2. One of them will definitely NOT be undefeated unless they get 2 COVID cancels.

My projection of the week 6 rankings.

1 North Carolina (8 - 0) Beat Air Force
2 Duke (8 - 0) Did not play
3 Maryland (5 - 0) Beat OSU
4 Syracuse (4 - 1) Beat Holy Cross
5 Rutgers (4 - 1) Beat JHU
6 Denver (6 - 2) Beat Gerogetown
7 Notre Dame (4 - 0) Beat Cleveland St
8 Army (3 - 1) Did not play
9 Lehigh (3 - 0) Did not play
10 Georgetown (5 - 1) Lost to Denver
11 Virginia (5 - 2) Beat RMU
12 Loyola (4 - 2) Beat Bucknell
13 UMass (2 - 0) Beat Drexel
14 Ohio State (2 - 3) Lost to Maryland
15 Johns Hopkins (2 - 3) Lost to Rutgers
16 Navy (2 - 0) Did not play
17 Delaware (6 - 1) Beat Towson
18 Vermont (3 - 2) Beat NJIT
19 UAlbany (3 - 1) Beat Binghamton
20 Villanova (3-1) Did not play
21 Hofstra (3 - 1) Did not play
22 Bryant (4-1) Beat Wagner
23 Penn State (1 - 4) Lost to Michigan
24 Richmond (3 - 3) Beat Bellarmine
25 Highpoint (2-4) Beat VMI

These are not my personal rankings. Just how I project they will be ranked on Monday. Some comments:
  • I think Syracuse is ranked too high. Their only top 11 win is Virginia.
  • Syracuse at Duke on 3/25 will be a big test for the SU defense and both teams.
  • Until Virginia can clean up their defensive and clearing issues, they are not a top 10 team IMHO.
  • Notre Dame needs to play a tough game to deserve this ranking. Their early season schedule is way too soft.
  • UND and UVA game on 3/27 is critically important. It will be interesting to see if UND's lack of hard game experience is a factor.
  • Top 10 rankings will probably be different next week based the excellent ACC games this week.

Delaware is higher rated than that.

People will over-rate the loss to Mount Saint Mary’s
when half the team was out, and under-rate the win
over Towson - well, because they really don’t watch
the games, is why.

Totally agree that the loss to Mt. Saint Mary's should not matter much. COVID impacted that game significantly.

I did not watch the Delaware - Towson game. But, regardless beating Towson by 1 is not going to move them up by more than 1 spot in the rankings over last week. They will struggle to move up much until they beat Umass, which will be a tough game.

Drop Hop and Penn State. Hop's best win is over PSU. PSU's only win is against OSU.

I, mean, at least Hop didn't lose to Michigan.

that surely shouldn't, and won't unchallenged, happen with umd playing their b1g only schedule.

more importantly, it could come down to who is "beat up" vs a umd team who "hasn't been tested in big moments" maybe. bring your narratives.
I posted previously that no one would get that moniker this year if UVA isn’t going to for 2006. Fair or not and I don’t think any of this years teams would be all time anyway.

But that’s not what was in response most recently it was UMD couldn’t handle the ACC which I don’t know, they’d be the stylistic outlier, ND hasn’t been that grind it ou type in a good while probably since they lost in the Final to Duke and began getting access to more “sexy”offensive players 8-10yrs ago. I also think the BigTen is pretty overrated this year but you could have an all time team, though not without Ivy participation IMO, if they ripped through the playoffs like Brock Lesnar.
i'd like to meet the people that don't think 2006 was an all-time team and who they think is.

ripping thru the tournament we'll see what that looks like. calling any of that halfway thru the regular season, particularly in an incestuous b1g season, is silly.

Ah. Couldnt tell if it was directed. For me, the “is this a legacy team” regarding MD was questionable but then so is the “they suck and UNC has had a better three decade run and they could never hang in the ACC” (as of they weren’t in the conference and only left because Debbie Yow is about as good with money as Johnny Depp is).

Kudos for the Yow callout.

Right after she got to MD from SLU, she came to a class I was taking. She ended up getting mad the students for asking too hard of questions. Was a very uncomfortable 75 minutes.

The bottom 25% of the Top 20 not being awful? I mean Navy was ranked 16th this week and they’ve played two games against Mount St. Mary’s and Jacksonville.

Jacksonville is 4-3 with their losses to UNC, Navy and Duke Which is arguably better than JHUs 2-3 w a 6 goal home loss to OSU.

Boston U
Bryant
UMBC
LIU
Jax
Stony brook
UVM
Del
Hofstra
Albany
Richmond
Villanova

All have equal or better resumes at this stage and were 5-7 games into the season. Not to mention hops 2-4 w that impressive win over MSM in 2020 and the appearance that the BigTen is as weak as it’s been since its formation this year. Very hard to keep Hop ranked with all of this unless you so love Penn St to overcome the rest with the three losses being generally uncompetitive.

They may get better but 4-6 weeks and this far in with a team that wasn’t good last year is a very tough case to justify.

Jacksonville's wins are Bellarmine, Mercer, Utah, and....Mercer again. Not exactly sure that's better than Michigan or Penn State as disappointing as those two have been.

LIU has two wins over a 1-7 Sacred Heart team. Sacred Heart's 1 win? LIU. The Hobart one was legit but uhh...not working with much there.

Richmond is basically a mid-major Hopkins. Tons of media attention, lots of love from folks in lax media, and always losing big games to these ACC schools they schedule. 2 of their 3 wins are VMI and Bellarmine.

Delaware, Vermont, Hofstra will all be ranked ahead of Hopkins come a few hours I imagine; all were already ranked in the Top 20 this week.

It's really a Top 15 at this stage of the season, and if Hopkins is one of the next 5, so be it.
