Critics of the president’s decision to withdraw American forces quickly argued that the operation took place in spite of, not because of, Mr. Trump and that if the military had not slow-rolled his plan to withdraw, the raid would not have been possible. Rather than justifying a pullout, they said, the raid underscored the importance of maintaining an American military presence in Syria and Iraq to keep pressure on the Islamic State.
“We must keep in mind that we were able to strike Baghdadi because we had forces in the region,” said Representative Michael Waltz, Republican of Florida and a former Army Green Beret. “We must keep ISIS from returning by staying on offense.”
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/27/us/p ... e=Homepage
Notable that a Republican took the opportunity to criticize Trump’s reckless, impulsive withdrawal from Syria.
Also notable ... Trump praised Russia more than the Kurds, despite the fact that the Kurds were apparently key to locating Baghdadi.
Go ahead ... tell me Trump isn’t beholden to Putin.

You are seriously deranged. You are so emotional that Hillary didn’t win, it’s clouded your judgement of truth in every way, shape and form. You need to move on and accept Trump is your President. He’s doing great things for this country for people of every background, color and creed . Your brain has been filled with mush by the mainstream media. Democrats have tried everything to stop him but he keeps getting the job done. Democrats are screwed in 2020. I can sense it in your posts you are so nervous good to see you squirm for once. Adversity is good for you Mr Elitist. How’s it feel? To get owned by the truth time and time again? MAGA KAG. Better find your safe space

I am a little reluctant to demonize rank and file Republicans like MDLaxfan, or centrists who seem to understand that this Presidency is really different. It is the real Trump apologists and normalizers and generators of false equivalencies that should get your condemnation. We have to find enough common ground with folks in the center and center right to remove this President.
Like you, I think the WH press secretary's comment is just disturbing. This is the way party acolytes speak about dictators, and this one uses the fulcrum of John Kelly's head to do it. I may not like John Kelly's politics, but I don't doubt his commitment to the Republic or the Constitution. My guess is the WH-PS hasn't read the Constitution all the way through once in her life. You really don’t bother doing your homework, do you? You can’t properly understand Rep. Waltz’s comments without understanding that Waltz has been a very vocal critic of Trump’s reckless, impulsive withdrawal from Syria.
Republican Rep. Michael Waltz said on Monday that President Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops in northeastern Syria is unfolding too soon and creates wars instead of ending them.
“We’ve set the conditions for ISIS 2.0,” Waltz, R-Fla., told “America’s Newsroom.” “Except we won’t have any local allies to fight them again.”
... Waltz, a former Green Beret, went on to say, “The United States has to lead, and when we create a vacuum, bad actors and bad things happen and fill the void.”

No hint of negativity or sour grapes about our announced withdrawal.

If you have followed my posts at all, you know I don't draw any false equivalencies, nor are my opinions about the danger Trump and Trumpism represent any secret. And my views were expressed about him, early and often, pre-election and post. My prior views about him have unfortunately been proven correct.
I needn't be "embarrassed" by any aspect of Trump and Trumpism, other than as an American when interacting with citizens of other countries.
I wrote the above before his statement (which itself was ok, on script); it's good news for America and the world.
That said, I also expressed concern that he might stray from script, start using the personal pronoun "I", and make a mockery of a serious moment. And, yes, that's what he unfortunately did. And I'd predict that he'll respond to critique about doing so by doubling down, and his base will cheer his doing so.
It's really, really unfortunate. But predictable.

I certainly wish I had the power to have had, or now have, the 'responsibility' for Trump.
Unfortunately I have no more power than do you in that regard.
Listen, the problem, IMO, is that a whole bunch of Dems and I's who voted for Obama crossed over to vote for Trump, many IMO, for some really ugly reasons, others because of a rejection of the corporatist side of the Dem party, personified by HRC. Those who crossed for ugly reasons are going to stick with Trump, I am concerned about where others will land, much of which will be dependent upon who the Dems run against Trump.
R's like me supported candidates in the GOP primary who lost to Trump, IMO because the moderate end of the party was dispersed over a bunch of candidates and a bomb thrower (Trump) dominated the stage as unique. His 30-35% base consolidated, and no one else consolidated a greater cohort. I remained opposed to Trump in the general, though as a Marylander I had the luxury of voting third party as a protest vote as MD was safe for HRC.
Yes, Dems kept Bernie from being the candidate last time, but it sure looks like Warren may consolidate that wing of the Dems and the moderate wing will remain dispersed, with a relatively poor candidate (Biden) holding onto too many of such voters for someone else to emerge instead. So, the Dems are in real risk of having Warren be the standard bearer, and though I don't think she has much of HRC's other baggage, and she will be a far harder working candidate, her views/policies could easily lead to a win for Trump.
I'll vote for a piece of wood over Trump, but I think there will be many who look at Warren as a bridge too far.
