I stand corrected, but I'll take it!

As I said last week, this is a new season and Jays are now 1-0. They will be playing a Rutgers team that is a lock for the NCAA tournament. Hopkins, meanwhile, is playing their best lacrosse at exactly the right time. Can’t wait for the matchup.

“No. 3 Penn State men’s lacrosse (4-7) was dominated from start to finish by No. 6 Johns Hopkins (3-8) in a 15-7 thrashing at Panzer Stadium on Saturday. Despite coming in as the favorites, Penn State didn’t stand much of a chance from the end of the first quarter on.

Mac O’Keefe and TJ Malone were the only Nittany Lions that did anything offensively, as they both put up three points. Aleric Fyock started in goal, making five saves while allowing 11 goals, before being replaced by Colby Kneese, who made one save on five shots.

For Hopkins, Connor DeSimone had six points and Cole Williams had four goals. Tim Marcille was great in the cage for the Blue Jays, making 12 saves on 18 shots.”

The offense was stagnate, unimaginative, and horrendous in this game. It was similar to the first time these teams met, as Penn State couldn’t create anything, and scored only one more goal in this game then it did in the first matchup. Props also have to go to Hopkins’ defense, who had its sticks in all the right places at the right time. Tim Marcille was also a brick wall in net. He was the determining factor in this game, but he was massive when he needed to be.

The defense was ugly in this one as well. Hopkins’ attackers dodged their way through the Penn State defense with ease on more than one occasion. Connor DeSimone was also a key factor that needed to be shut down in this game, as he had six points. Aleric Fyock also got the start in the cage in this one and didn’t have his best performance. The question heading into the game was who would start in goal, and Jeff Tambroni went with the redshirt sophomore who was amazing in his last outing against Ohio State. There was no wrong answer heading into this game and hindsight is 20-20, but one has to be asking if Tambroni will regret his decision.

Penn State was 3-3 on the man up advantage in this game. It doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, but it was a positive for Penn State in a game full of negatives.

Barring a miracle at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, the Nittany Lions’ season is over. After entering the season as the No. 7 team in the country, Penn State finishes with a disappointing 4-7 record.”

When was the last time Jays had 15 six-on-six goals? Add nine assists to that total.

Both Reindon and Lyne contributed 3GBs and 2CTs. On a day when Jays were only 9-26 (34.62%) at the dot, the 12 saves and 6GBs by Marcille changed the tide of the game.

In normal years, correct, but I have read here that the committee has not ruled out relaxing that criterion this year.
Maybe it was on the Syracuse thread where fans there were wondering if they needed to schedule an additional game in case they were sub- .500, or if maybe they might not need it if the committee went more with an 'eye test' this year.

Flalax pointed this out last week, but impressive to see Peshko out there on the wings. He shoved a dude out of bounds to cause a turnover after a faceoff. Don't see freshmen offensive middies doing that every day.

The whole freshman middie line scored today. Not crazy to think those three could be our starting attack in two years.

Thought Jack Lyne had a good game. O'Keefe was not much of a factor in the 6v6.

That has to be the best game by the SSDMs collectively in a very long time. Zinn, Martin, Lilly, Jaronski, Shure all had great games.

-penn state says no outside fans for events but looked like there were parents.
-The bracketology is not in rutgers favor with a loss to us next and you have to think it's going to be an extremely emotional game for their guys. Be interesting how PM prepares them for the intensity because after a week off I'm sure they're going to come out with everything.
-hard to evaluate what today means long term considering this is a program we've already beaten this year. building off maryland it was good, the guys were physically imposing on the road, but is it the opponent or are they for real now?

Nice one for the Hop! Great 6 v 6 offense; good clears and generally mistake-free lacrosse; great goaltending by Marcile. Good to see the Jays live to fight another day.

In addition to Jack Keough, sounds like Joey Epstein and Cole Williams were playing through some injuries.

Absolutely right ... give credit where it is due.

Indeed, I think this was the best overall defensive performance we have seen from a Hopkins team in many years. Goalie play, SSDM performance, transition defense, clears, caused turnovers ... it was all there. Although man-down defense was in the hole 3-3, I don’t think the Blue Jays did a bad job there either.

I know it’s only been two games, but Marcille is an awful lot of fun to watch. Quick hands, active, good outlets, hustle and a ton of positive energy. Seems like an infectious personality. Have to imagine the d loves playing in front of him.

Marcille came on in Hopkins’ loss to Rutgers and started vs. Maryland in the wake of an injury to Josh Kirson, and Milliman says the sophomore has benefited from a change in the staff’s approach to training goalies about three weeks ago.

“The mechanics we were working on,” he says. “I started making some phone calls, asking for ideas, we came up with things to try, and it’s really resonated with Timmy. … I thought we were a little slow, a little hesitant to start the game. … When we came together, I think at the end of the first quarter, we said ‘Keep asserting yourself, make mistakes, nobody cares. Just be you, be aggressive.’ I think that’s why he’s playing like he is. I don’t even know if it’s confidence, it’s just being assertive. He’s been battling all year. He was far and away our third goalie to start the year, we changed things up, he benefited from that. Now he’s yelling at guys on the clear, in the defense.”

I am, by no means, a Hopkins expert. I watch about 3-4 of their games a year...

My biggest takeaway from yesterday was that this team was imposing their will on the opponent. They looked tougher and more determined than PSU. They are playing their best lacrosse right now and I am happy for the seniors that they, at the very least, got that one "meaningful" win yesterday.

Ultimately, I still feel like this team is too "small" in physical stature to compete nationally. This will need to be addressed by PM and staff in future classes. I remember watching them against Maryland earlier in the year and seeing some of their offensive players just getting thrown around by Maryland SSDMs. You don't see that happening in a Syracuse Notre Dame match up.
