Australia > Brazil 3-2

An exciting match in which Aussie's physicality and size overwhelmed the quicker and skillful play of the Brazilians who had taken the early lead.

As with men's physical sports, size and power does matter. And very often it overwhelms skillful play. Brazil's defense got pounded by the Aussie forwards and this led to an own-goal which caused the eventual margin of victory. The score was previously disallowed by a linesman's offside call but it was overruled by VAR (video assistant referee). This is the second game I've watched where instant replay impacted on the final outcome.

the only thing wrong with women's sports is the lack of support it gets from women.
i dunno. the stadiums are sold out and...
Today, the women's USA national soccer team complains it does not get paid as much money as does the men's team
during their respective world cups, the women's teams gets more eyeballs than the men. And when it's not the World cup, the WC only being one month every four years, the Women's team gets a bigger draw and makes more money. and, still, they get paid less. i dunno...

Sold out? Sorry, but they are not even close.

As for revenues generated:

The main argument for why the men’s World Cup prize money totals are so much bigger than the women’s counterpart is that men’s soccer has far more interest among fans — and far higher revenues. The women’s World Cup 2015 in Canada reportedly brought in $73 million in revenues, including some $17 million in TV ads just in the U.S. Those are actually tiny numbers compared to the $6 billion in revenues FIFA raked in during the 2018 men’s World Cup in Russia.

$73 million as opposed to $ 6 billion ~ not much of a comparison

One thing that rarely get mentioned is that the more attractive players pose for girlie magazines, especially in Europe, often making more than $1 million per year just for taking off their clothes. Thus, the gals aren't missing any meals. But as for the salaries they get, we shall see what happens next.

you're comparing the mens to the womens world cup. that's very different than the mens and womens USA world cups. and, as mentioned above, that's just the world cup. just one month. vs. the 47 months that comprise the rest of a 4 year period.

Actually, both teams are under FIFA's administration which gets all the money and governs all financial distributions.

The arguments against equal earnings are quite convincing. Consider this: if you and I worked for a company as salesmen, you sell $40 million in merchandise and I manage to sell a cartoon of cigarettes for 4 years in succession, should we receive equal salaries? Few companies would manage to profit and the stockholders would likely be unhappy if this was mandated. FIFA has looked at this matter of salary equalization quite closely over the years and it has put a great deal of money into promoting women's international football. Its efforts in this regard have been commendable. So far, the financial returns have not been as generous as they should have been. That certainly is no fault of that governing body. But let's hope that the issue will be settled and soon.

The women aren't suing FIFA. They're suing US Soccer.

but they are complaining about the pay gap in FIFA sanction events: https://www.nbcsports.com/northwest/wor ... -seriously

though they are also concerned about things such as disparate hotel and international flight accomodations - by the way, the women actually got a higher percentage of the WC revenues raised as shown in the link

Germany > RSA 4-0

SaFa's were lucky it wasn't 7-0 or worse. Was a completely one sided affair and, in truth, wasn't any fun to watch.

RSA is far more into rugby-union rather than soccer so it's no surprise that its team isn't at the level of Germany or others in the tourny.

England > Japan 2-0

Very close game, actually. Japan seemed to control the neutral zone but couldn't finish in what was a very intense effort by both squads.

I just caught the very end of Scotland-Argentina which ended 3-3. Evidently, Scotland blew a 3-0 lead. Kinda wish now that I had seen this event instead.

Looking forward to the USA-Sweden match.

USA > Sweden 2-0

Early score set the stage for our Yanks win. Generally good ball control thru much of the match. If there was one chip in the armor, I'd say it was on D as left back Dunn was caught out of position and put a weak mark on the right flank attack. Luckily, the attacker either missed the goal or the GK stopped the strikes.

Swedish girls were physical but the Yanks were equal to the task by displaying their own physicality, lateral quickness, and good balance. USA wins the Group and it's on to the Round of 16.

Great to see a game played in front of a full house as it was today.

comments/criticism/analysis of the WWC:

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/06/21/foot ... index.html

One feature is discussion of USA's defense. As I wrote above, there is a weak link at the left back and coach Ellis needs to shore it up because a team that hopes to win cannot afford defensive lapses such as those which occurred vs Sweden. Aside from the empty seats, the only other negative to the tourny has been that it shows the gulf between the haves and have-nots in the world of womens pro soccer. Hopefully this deficiency will be corrected by the next tourny in four years.

Norway > Australia 1-1 (1)

Nords won in OT on pk shootouts as they scored 4 to Oz's 1. At one time in the match the ref called handball on Norway's defense in the penalty box but she took back the call as it was overturned by the VAR. Matilda's put up a good match but appeared to run out of steam as Nords were in better shape. I believe they will take on England in their next match and, hopefully, will not be worn out by all their exertions in this match.

Indeed! Amazing how such a small country like Norway (population: 5 million) can produce so many Olympic athletes in so many sports and can compete with the USA, Russia, Japan, et al. At one time they were the chief rivals for our gals in footy but suffered a decline in the sport. But now they are back at the top.

Watched some of the Aussie Downundas v Norwegian Nordics game. Never liked playing soccer, never liked watching it. Gave it a fair shot today, no change. Gotta change the rules, fast breaks, pick and cut, attack the cage, do away with the offsides, make the cage smaller. Gotta love casual fans, eh?
This soccer I find a whole lot more entertaining.

Just watched a show on how Norway handles its youth athletics, aint nuthin like it is here in the USA. They take it pretty seriously from a, let's get everyone involved and make it fun, angle. Works for them, they produce quite a number of world class athletes considering the size and population.

A few years ago there had been talk of heightening the cross bar because today's goalies are so much taller than they were a few generations ago when the field dimensions were created. I would agree to do so but only in the pro game. The amateur game at youth, scholastic, and collegiate levels all have sufficient scoring so that such a move would not be necessary or even advisable.
