I think you mean BC prevailed over Duke in terms of draw controls. Jenner prevailed over BC no. 8 ;) 8-7 in DCs.

I’d want to review the game tape to see whether the stats are accurate (sometimes they aren’t), whether each of the two players took all of the draws for her team, and how the draws not won by either of them were controlled by their teammates before reaching a final conclusion as to which player did a better job on the draw for her team.

Give me twenty mlaxers and every one of them can throw the ball with that kind of velocity, give me twenty wlaxers and how many can? Yes, I know all about the difference in the sticks but that is not the difference, the difference is technique. This is about leverage and torque and how you use your body to get that, it's not about the stick or strength.
I was watching the UVA/ND game and was noting that one of the players pushes her passes (stiff stop of the stick)....all of them. She comes from a LAX family and had to have been taught to follow through, but it isn't there....What she does creates soft, often moon like passes.
Yes, I have noticed this for years now, too many girls tend to "push" the ball rather than "throw" the ball (think most understand what I mean by that), it makes me crazy. I've always wondered if that's because of dangerous shot/pass rules in that the follow through can land you in the penalty box if you're not careful with it.
Cletus wrote: Wed Apr 07, 2021 8:12 am I’m noticing a lot more players who can rip the ball from the 8 m free position like North. Players I hadn’t even heard of on multiple teams can rip it this way now. I think the influence is certainly out there. Selena Lasota and Nicole Levy come to mind from a previous graduating class. Izzy obviously in this day. #’s 51 and 44 for SU. I’ll start keeping my eye out for others.
Yup, there are getting to more and more of them (Halle Majorana threw it like this too). This is simply a matter of teaching a player how to throw the ball right. Some are better with a stick than others but all should have the right mechanics. Methinks more and more in the future will be shooting like this and that's apt to cause problems in the girl's game....might be viewed as too dangerous.
Couldn't agree more with most of this thread and it is one of my pet peeves as well. Very few coaches at the youth level are qualified or care to teach fundamentals to kids early in their development. The reason why most kids throw the passes you suggest is because they were never taught to throw straight up and down and follow through. They learn to throw by dragging the stick across their body which prevents proper follow through. It is really hard to correct after high school so college coaches don't bother trying. Where you see the difference is in the accuracy and pace of passes as you suggest. As far as shooting, some of the shots you describe are because of the issue mentioned above. However, one of the big changes in womens lacrosse that has been taught by a few coaches and now mimic'd by others is to shoot off the shoulder of defenders to achieve a screen of the goalie. A full follow through would result in striking the shoulder of the defender and a yellow card. So certain programs (just watch the Cuse girls shoot in traffic) teach three girls to shoot hard but stop the follow through short of hitting the defender. It's very subtle and sometimes its hard to tell who is doing it intentionally (goals) and who just has bad form (misses the cage).

I was at the game and I am 90% sure that all draws were taken by North and Jenner. North was giving up 7 inches of height to Jenner so it was a pretty impressive display of athleticism by North to win 8 draws herself (to Jenner's 9), but it was clear that her strategy was to avoid a 1:1 jump ball situation with Jenner. Before every draw, North was conferring with her teammates on the circle and re-directing them with head nods once locked up with Jenner. North was particularly clutch with the game on the line and under 10 minutes to go in the second half. BC went 4 for 4 on the final draw controls of the game. This was the first time that Duke lost the draw control battle all year. You are correct that it's possible the totals were miscounted, but my first-hand perspective was that 19-15 seems about right. One thing I have never understood about draw control stats is why they are not scored the same way as men's faceoffs. The important thing is which team gains possession, not who scoops a loose ball. I don't know why women's lacrosse doesn't score it the same way. Give the players on the circle credit for a ground ball, but the draw control specialist should get the W or the L.

Does anyone have any idea where Jordan Lappin has been this year? Is she injured? or just beat out by someone else for a spot on the field?

My guess is your last guess. It could be an injury but with the way women's lacrosse keeps injuries a state secret, it's almost impossible to know. Lappin was a marginal player when she was getting regular playing time. It wouldn't surprise me if coach Acacia chose one of her more talented incoming recruits to take her spot.

Here is another how to video for DMac’s shooting clinic DVD box set. You can’t spell crank without a C and an N.

Watched the Virginia Tech game this AM, and I will say that BC plays very nice offense, and the offense is hardly only North. But she is a spectacular talent. I continue to think that the Achilles Heel here is defense.

BC plays Notre Dame twice in Chestnut Hill, and then Syracuse twice in the Dome. I can see BC going 1-3 in those games, best case scenario.

It’s gonna be a tough one for ND with two players out (there best player to boot) and short tun around for a Thursday game .

#33 Samantha Lynch was escorted off the field yesterday with an injury - could possibly be her

Awfully awkward way she came down. It was good to see her laughing and smiling as she walked off. I don't know if she's out for sure though.

Not a surprise that North once again won the ACC offensive award this week, but I was surprised to see that her 10 goals set a new ACC record. She has truly put together an epic season, but the next four games will count a lot toward how this team is really viewed. Two games hosting ND this week and two games in the Dome next week. It doesn't happen very often (ever?) that you play four games against top four opponents in 11 days.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Boston College senior attacker Charlotte North has notched ACC Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Duke junior goalkeeper Sophia LeRose was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week.

North earned Offensive Player of the Week laurels for the second straight week and the fourth time this season.

North scored an ACC and Boston College record 10 goals on just 13 shots Saturday in a 21-11 win at Virginia Tech. The Dallas, Texas, native added an assist for 11 points on the day. North tied her career high with 13 draw controls, which is tied for the third most in a game at BC. She added a career-high three caused turnovers.

2021 ACC Offensive Players of the Week
Feb. 16 – Samantha Lynch, Gr., A, Notre Dame
Feb. 23 – Scottie Rose Growney, Sr., A, North Carolina
March 2 – Charlotte North, Sr., A, Boston College; Jamie Ortega, Sr., A, North Carolina
March 10 – Jamie Ortega, Sr., A, North Carolina
March 16 – Charlotte North, Sr., A, Boston College
March 23 – Samantha Lynch, Gr., A, Notre Dame
March 30 – Jenn Medjid, Jr., A, Boston College
April 6 – Charlotte North, Sr., A, Boston College; Jamie Ortega, Sr., A, North Carolina
April 13 – Charlotte North, Sr., A, Boston College

Just a follow up on this, wlaxphan—Lappin released a story on social media yesterday around 1pm. It showed a polo game in progress adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. The location stamp was Miami Beach, Florida. That would have been only hours after BC won their exhilarating game over Syracuse, which is a long way from beach blankets and sun block this time of year.

Cletus with the detective work! Just checked their roster and Lappin is not listed; they have no #27 this year, so it's likely she started the year with the team and left at some point. She struggled with concussions a couple years ago so it's possible she reached her head injury limit and medically retired.

I don't see one starter on the field on offense for BC other than Mossman who's a junior. 8 minutes left. Gotta rest the starters with another game in less than 48 hours. Wicked shmahht.

North graduating?

Post by Cletus »

I don’t know if any conclusions can be drawn, but Charlotte North is on social media today with two of her teammates celebrating graduation, replete with champagne. Charlotte’s the only one wearing a black gown. Cara Urbank and Jillian Reilly (both grad students) are flanking.
