Penn releases 2020 schedule

Post by wlaxnut »

https://pennathletics.com/news/2019/11/ ... edule.aspx

Interesting little note from the release:

“A new team has been added to the schedule, as Penn will face off against Loyola for the first time since an NCAA Tournament game in 2012. The battle is the first between the two in the regular season since 2005, and it will pit the Rosenzweig sisters against each other with Penn's Gabby set to battle Loyola's Livy.”

That’s a great OOC pickup for both teams. Another game for the good Doctor to report on here once his feet warm up.

lol.....I will....D was psyched because she has Quaker friends and she always loves to play against friends.

Penn will be very good this year....Not expecting a win, but you never know..

Keep posting the schedules...Loyola doesn't post theirs until late in the offseason (IIRC), so maybe I can find out where they are going by all the other teams....

Next week top 5 midfielders
Hard to argue about any of those kids. I think she and a lot of folks overlook Princeton's Sears. 64 goals and 19 assists her freshman year; 55 goals and 40 assists her sophomore year, when she drew the number one defender and a faceguard half the time or more.

I would prob put in Sears over D’Orsi, IMO
And Larkin over Hartshorn
Will be interesting to see how Scane does without Lasota

1 - Jamie Ortega
2 - Izzy Scane and Emily Hawryschuk

I can deal with (even though two #2's is a cop out)--but I have to roll my eyes at some of these choices from the "expert".

How in the world does Charlotte North not end up on this list? I'd put her 2nd easy. 3rd at the absolute lowest. Not just because she easily has the numbers (82 goals 23 assists in only 19 games last year) but anyone watching her can see she is one of the elite scorers/attackers in div 1.

Then Kelly Larkin--how she gets left off this list is another head scratcher. Her numbers last year: 69 goals 52 assists in 21 games, and another player you watch and see pretty quickly how talented she is.

These numbers and the ol' eye test do not support inclusion from these very talented (but not top 5) attackers.
And I agree--clearly Kyla Sears as the representative from Princeton.

Kali Hartshorn 48 g 19 a in 23 games
Tess D'Orsi 64 g 16 a 20 games
Ali Baiocco 52 g 28 a 19 games

My top 6

1 - Jamie Ortega
2 - Charlotte North
3 - Izzy Scane
4 - Emily Hawryschuk
5 - Kelly Larkin
6 - Kyla Sears

You can add up the draw controls for the other 8 players you mentioned in your post, and Kali Hartshorn has more than all of them combined.

Maybe its not just goals. She could become all the all-time draw leader at Maryland, which has had some of the best players to ever play the game.

...except the category was top 5 attackers, not draw control specialists or all-around players. (She shouldn't be in the top 5 all-around category either.) Hartshorn played 23 games taking draws exclusively last year. There were instances when she was replaced because she was getting beat too often (like against UNC early in the season), but on the whole, whenever there was a draw, Kali was taking it--in the same way it was for Apuzzo at BC, but her numbers last year were 94 goals 30 assists and 191 draw controls in the same 23 games. As for the other 8 attackers mentioned, some of them don't even line up in the draw circle--let alone take the draw.

And why shouldnt an attacker get credit for taking draws? I'm not arguing shes Sam Apuzzo. I'm arguing that the conversation for best attacker can be based on more than goals and assists.

Sure it can—I agree. But it doesn’t apply to Kali in this category. I don’t think Hartshorn belongs in that conversation. And the numbers bear that out. I like Hartshorn, but she’s just not a top 5 (or top 10 for that matter) attacker—by any measuring stick.

It will be interesting to see what kind of senior year Brindi Griffin at Maryland will have. She really exploded at the end of the year and in the playoffs. I think both she and Kali Hartschorn belong on this list. Last year Maryland’s goals were really spread out with all their firepower.

It’ll be interesting to see what both Griffins do.

True but I think Maryland’s firepower will come from their attack this year. Grace Griffin May be called on to steady the Defense at times if Lizzie Coldon is redshirted. Variety May will be the feeder instead of Brindi. I also see Hannah Warther in a much bigger role with the top notch freshmen being slowly integrated.

Do you think they can afford to not utilize Grace Griffin for offensive purposes? She put up some very decent overall numbers last year. Nice percentage on free position goals, as well.

I'm not the closest Maryland watcher here, but my impression has always been that Maryland's strength has been in depth across the field, and in excellent midfielders. It was never just Cummings, never just Giles; they were accompanied by really good players. This suggests that Warther and the freshmen are going to have to really develop.

It will be a learning experience that Cathy has been through before. Tori Barrretta is apparently looking very good as a defensive middy but they certainly have a lot of experience to replace. Catie May will surbe ly step up as attack and Kali and Brandi are stars in their own right. I expect Grace Griffin to have a great year but she may need to help out on defense int he early part of the season. The talented freshmen will certainly get a lot of looks especially Emma Schettig. I'm concerned most about their defense with potentially only one returning starter. The offense will score goals .

How about who’s minding the cage? Any thoughts on who will be in net? Big shoes to fill there.

My guess is Maddie McSally but all three of the goaltenders are good. Still, really big shoes to follow!
