Merchant-Ivory's "The Bostonians" [1984]
IMDb only gave it a 3 star.
Rotten Tomatoes gave it 4.5 stars.
Am a member of IMDb and am surprised that my fellow members didn't give it a higher rating. I gave it a 4.
I thought Christopher Reeve as Southern lawyer & rebel Basil Ransom dominated the movie. Linda Hunt as Dr Mary Prance was superb. Over the years I have come across many interesting literary characters. Dr Prance is one of the most fascinating characters I have read about. Another novel or perhaps a series of short stories should have been written about her. And then there's Vanessa Redgrave - awesome as ever. Great costuming, scenery, and background music.

I remember watching it in my youth but was not aware back then that it was a comedy. Indeed, there were many funny scenes with a happy, comedic ending.

Pearl of Death [1944] - Sherlock Holmes Universal movie starring Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce
rated 7.1 by IMDb

Outstanding mystery. Superb setting. Rondo Hatton as assassin and Miles Mander as the chief villain were just awesome. But perhaps the chief highlight for me was the great work of beautiful British-American Evelyn Ankers. In the movie she portrayed an elegant villainess, street corner matchbox sales girl, Irish cashier - all roles requiring her to change garments and to put on a very different personality. She was just so incredibly talented. Today there just isn't any actress around who could match her for beauty, talent, and elegance:

Timeless Cold War classic from 1962.
IMDb gave it a 7.9 ~ I gave it an 8 on their scale. Our honored Chairman of the Board led what was a truly a great cast. Superb acting, highly intense ending. I esp liked the work of Khigh Dhiegh who always played diabolical characters back in the day. He always portrayed Asian villains though he was (I believe) of Algerian and mixed blood.

Mile 22 Another Peter Berg directed film that goes into the depths of military, DOS, and clandestine OPS that often take place without civilian knowledge.

Mixed reviews. American critics did not like it. But British critics thought it was one of the best. Bill Hartnell was such a fine actor and Peter Lorre looked terribly sinister in it:

I enjoyed this movie way back in 1960 when it was shown in the Brooklyn cinemas. While it had many merits, for me the highlight was beautiful Yvette Mimieux. I fell so in love with her!
wiki:
The Time Machine (also marketed as H. G. Wells' The Time Machine) is a 1960 American period science fiction film based on the 1895 novella of the same name by H. G. Wells. It was produced and directed by George Pal, and stars Rod Taylor, Yvette Mimieux, and Alan Young. The story is set in Victorian England and follows an inventor who constructs a machine that enables him to travel into the distant future. Once there, he discovers that mankind's descendants have divided into two species, the passive, childlike, and vegetarian Eloi and the underground-dwelling Morlocks, who feed on the Eloi.
The film was originally released on August 17, 1960, and was distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It received the Academy Award for Best Special Effects for its time-lapse photographic effects, which show the world changing rapidly as the time traveler journeys into the future.
IMDb rated it 7.5
I'm still convinced it was a gem and gave it a 9

Just re-watched this last night. It was a really good film. The second time around may have been even better. Great director. He has been prolific.

Dunno if you any of you are familiar with Hope Emerson. She was a decidedly un-glamorous actress in an era known for its glamour queens. At 6'2" and about 200 lbs, she had worked as a strong woman in circuses. But in one scene she dressed very elegantly and if I may confess it came as quite a surprise to me.

Indeed!
What amazes me is how many of these old movies were so highly regarded in their time but are not viewed this way any more. In my youth I remember how people just loved that movie - the acting, the scenery, beautiful Yvette Mimieux, etc. People would talk about going back or going forward in time and what adventures that would lead to. Back then, people spoke of it in the hope of finding or promoting a Utopian scenario. Today people aren't as optimistic about the future anymore. As to why they don't regard these movies so well, that's a matter I'd like to understand why they feel that way. To me they are timeless classics.

Don’t think it’s been mentioned but recently saw a newish movie called The Last Black Man in San Francisco and it’s very very good. Jonathan Majors is going to steamroll every other actor not named Daniel Day Lewis for the next decade.

Love my uncle, God rest his soul

Taught me so well, that I grabbed that gold
I left his dead ass there by the side of the road, yeah

Like so many movies made in the 1930s, there is an anti-materialist undercurrent. Somehow, money is the root of all evil and how lucky you are to be without it. Yeah, right. Like who in their right f______g mind would reject a truck load of money when it's handed to you for free? Just the same the movie does have its moments and has withstood the passing of time.
